could i use this for watercolor painting if i use watercolor paper and i tape it down with masking tape?

You could. The board itself is not water resistant and is just a particle board so if you keep it dry after each use it will work fine. You could also put a coat of urethane on it to water proof it! Hope this helps!

I really think I got a defective board. Pressing the clips does nothing!! Please help with your feedback.

Not sure what your question is, but to open and close clip you press the tip down and move it in or out of the top area. Mone works great!

Yes, you could put it in your lap. It's hard enough to not bend at all. Similar to a clip board. I like to use it with a slight slant. You may want to put a small pillow on your lap under the top of the board so the top is slightly higher to get a slight slant to it. It would work good on an easel too. Good luck!
