My husband and I drink alcohol on a daily basis, and milk thistle helps keep our liver tests in the normal range when we get our physicals every year. We recommend milk thistle to all of our friends who drink alcohol. The other bonus is that it also helps keep our cholesterol levels in the normal range. We have been taking milk thistle every day for the last 18 years. I am happy to have found an organic source for our supplement. Starwest Botanicals sells the seed in whole and powdered form. I use my Vitamix blender to grind the whole seeds. The powder does not dissolve in liquid; it's like sand, so usually I have to swish some water around in my drinking glass to get all the grit out of the bottom to drink down. I add the powder to apple juice or include it in my smoothies. It has no taste, so it's easy to take.

I am a head and neck cancer survivor and the Chemo and Radiation has left me with other health issues. Less than one year after surgery, radiation and chemo my gall bladder burst. I recovered from that and the painful issue with my liver started. After several scans and a lot of consultations with medical professionals, it was decided that nothing could be done with the spot on my liver and not medication was available for the pain the spot caused. This is not a cure for liver problems and is by no means a cure all. Keep your medical professionals informed of what you are doing. I use a pressure cooker for the hot water extraction to make a tea from the seeds. I put 1/2 gallon of water and small hand full of Milk Thistle Seeds and pressure for one hour. I take about 2 ounces of the Milk Thistle Tea daily. I have been taking the tea for a couple of months now and I do not feel any pain from my liver.

I have bought these several times. They're always very clean and well packaged. I usually soak them overnight then put one teaspoon in a smoothie. But they can be sprouted. I found if I take more than a teaspoon of them I may get a sore throat the next day. This may be a reaction unique to me. I sprouted some of them and have moved them into my garden. All parts of this plant are edible and have health benefits. For a while I was removing the thistles from the leaves before they go into my smoothie but I have found that the Vitamix blender totally destroys the thistles and I blend them with the rest of the leaf.
