Simple and Effective for 1st-time User
I just learned I'm pre-diabetic. So this is my first fore into testing blood glucose levels. It is a new experience and I was apprehensive about this whole testing thing. After getting the kit, I read the instruction booklet, which is extremely detailed and precise. Frankly, it was a bit over-whelming. I watched an online video on the process (done by the manufacturer). This made a vast difference being able to smoothly watch the whole test process from initial setup to blood testing. I was quite relieved, then - and confident this was a fairly simple process. Re this particular kit's operation - everything went exactly as the instruction and booklet described. The meter worked perfectly and showed my stats. I was amazed that the finger prick was actually painless (setting of #3 for depth). I am now a "veteran!" I am especially happy with the little carrying case and neatly laid out instruments and such inside. Now, with this tool I have been able to regulate my foods and control the levels well. I do recommend (I failed to) order the add-on kit of more test strips. There are only 10. It is okay for me as I wanted to evaluate the operation before committing to a larger investment. I see several folks that gave it low stars due to poor test results. I can see if one did not follow the directions precisely that the readout will be erroneous. There is a sure-fire method to check your meter's accuracy: they include a test solution that will accurately assess if the device is functioning within specs. Also, remember that this instrument is better as a trend device because it has a +/-20% accuracy. It is not a high-end medical grade analyzer!

Easy, Fast, and accurate! My advice? Watch the Videos!
I'm a retired medical laboratory technologist, and I have only one bit of advice for first time users: WATCH THE VIDEOS! You tube has several, but the one I thought was the best was titled "On Call Express, Simple blood glucose monitoring system". It's dated Jan. 14, 2014 and it's 7.07 minutes long. No need to feel overwhelmed with the directions. This monitor is really very east to use. They only give you 10 test strips, but you can order more from Amazon for a very reasonable price. As for the lancets, sticking yourself really doesn't hurt that much, but the included gadget to do that is a nice touch. As someone already mentioned, this works great to test dogs, and cats too (if you can catch them).

test strips sometimes bad
I read all the negative reviews and decided my review would be nearly the same. The only difference being that my On Call was even more inaccurate. This morning when I took 4 (four) readings they were way over 10 percent off. Lowest was 84 which was still higher than it should be and highest was 140! Since I have been using the On Call for nearly 2 months, I can't return it. So considered calling On Call support for a replacement. Then read a review saying the test strips aren't made as reliably as with more expensive test kits. And I further read that support is requesting "testing" on faulty test kits and other run-around bs. Forget that. So now I can toss the On Call test kit and new bottle of test strips and look for a reliable, probably more expensive one. Update, Oct. 23, 2021. Have continued using On Call Express for a total of about a year and a half now. After tossing the test strips that gave wildly varying results, all of the On Call Express test strips I purchased (using them once a week) have been close enough to consider good for what I need to know. Considering the price for the kit and then the price of the strips compared to the "accurate expensive ones", this is a pretty decent deal, with a caveat: If the result doesn't seem right, use another strip. If the difference is more than 10 mg/dl then try again. If the difference is still too high or low and you keep getting widely varying results, then you got a bad batch and should return them if it's not too late (they'll probably tell you to toss them or whatever). Out of 7 test-strip bottles by On Call Express that I have purchased, only one has been bad. The 4-pack I have now (Oct. 23, 2021) works fine.

Very happy with this
This kit was perfect to get me started so I could figure out what my blood sugar was doing. There can be a little variation in the readings, but that is with any monitor. The price was excellent for this, it came with everything needed, and is easy to use. I have a family history of diabetes and was worried I was starting to have blood sugar problems. Thanks to this little monitor I believe I caught my blood sugar issues long before it would be diagnosed by a dr. The drs have even recently said my blood sugar was fine, but I was having symptoms of blood sugar problems. With the help of this Ive been able to change my diet to control my blood sugar. I feel a lot better now.

Disappointed
Once again I talked myself into trying an inexpensive meter. Once again, I've been disappointed. My ins sponsored meter is a Freestyle Lite. I've been using it for several years and it's a good, accurate meter. I like to have a second one for backup. The On Call meter is 20 points off the Freestyle. Not acceptable, even though I'm not on insulin currently. The pros are it takes a very small drop of blood, the lancing device came with a clear cap for alternate site testing ( I test on my hand, not my fingers); results come back quickly, .it has an eject feature for discarding the strip. I also liked that it has a daily average feature for up to 90 days. I did the test with the included solution and it was right in the the middle, so it must be me. The included case is very nice also with a somewhat harder shell than most and pockets and elastic loops to hold everything in place. What it comes down to for me is accuracy. If it can't get closer than 20 points difference, it isn't good enough.
