Does anyone have any experience with this beanie coming off after taking a beating from a wave? I'd imagine all the tthrashing around would...

It can come off but it has a leash you attach to the zipper.  If it is a macking day,  then go for the traditional hood.  It it's a mellow day, go for the beanie. It's nice not having your neck constricted.  I love mine.

What is the sizing for beanie?

Hi Judith, I have a rather large head, and wear an XL hat. So I ordered an XL Beanie. However, it does stretch, so I would go down one size for a snug fit and that it doesn't come off easily in the water if using it for surfing or other water sports that the wearer may use it for, like water skiing too. Hope this helps. Btw, the size chart is there in the photos on the left side.

Question 3

does the beanie fit over the ears? I use ear plugs but suffer from swimmers ear and want double protect.

It can go over your ears, but when you do that it kind of messes up your line of vision for surfing.  You loose your peripheral vision.  I usually keep it flipped up.  BUT on those cold days, I flip it down while I'm waiting in the lineup.  Once a wave comes, I flip it up to see.
I love this beanie, it's perfect for surfing because your neck is not constricted.  More freedom to move while your noggin stays warm.  Anyone who hates wearing wetsuit hoods, this beanie is for you.
If you are swimming laps, it might work fine, flipped down.

Has anybody just worn it just because they liked the way it looked on your head or a real cold day out

Not quite but you could. Looks like a regular beanie from afar. I use it as an unconventional shower cap. Works great for that.
