Aside from color, what is the difference between the black/grey and clear one?

The black file is slightly more coarse. The clear file is more fine. I've used the black for edges, then polished the edges clean with the clear file. I would only use the clear file for buffing nail tops, since removing too much nail can be painful.

I have ridges on my finger nails and was told not to buff them off or I would have very thin nails. Will this make my nails thin?

I only use this for shaping my nails. I use a spongy block buffer (ONSEN BRAND) to remove ridges and buff them shiny bc in my opinion this tool works too good for buffing. Especially thin nails like mine. "It's like using a sledge hammer to pound in a tac" I love this thing though. Best nail file I've ever used.

Which file should you use first for buffing?

They are both the same you can file and buff with both.

Has this weakened your nails over time?

I'm careful not to use it too often., but that's okay because the shine lasts.
