Nice quality feel, smooth, heavy, quiet
I had an old Dynabee back in the late 1970s - this one is a bit heavier, feels much more precise and solid, and works really well. The little string pull starters are great if you can't get it started easily by itself - I have a pretty good success rate spinning it up by hand then teasing it up to speed gently. I find that it is quiet enough to watch TV while using it. You can control the resistance by how much effort you put in, and when you get going hard, the resistance is strong enough to get a good hand/forearm workout very quickly. From reading other's comments, I see there are a few different grips/positions that I have not tried, so I look forward to those. I also found, to my slight surprise, that one hand requires a lot more focus and attention than the other, and I can't really sustain it well with that hand, so that is another good goal to work on!

Oh Yea.. Feel The Burn!
I bought this NSD Power Essential Spinner Gyroscopic Wrist and Forearm Exerciser on a whim after trying numerous exercises, wraps, lotions, salves and meds to deal with experiencing prolonged pain from forearm muscle damage. My expectations were low so I’ve been wonderfully surprised to find that the pain I’ve been experiencing for near a year has gone down greatly in the course of less than a couple of weeks. I’m being careful and am following instructions I was given. No more than thirty seconds at a time, for three times a day max, with a minimum of an hour in between has resulted in something wonderful happening. I don’t understand what it’s doing, but I’m thankful it’s doing it. If all’s good at the end of two weeks, I have a green light to increase from thirty seconds a pop to a whole minute. A minute might not seem long, but I am telling you, that if you haven’t been doing any wrist or arm muscle strengthening, a minute will be a goal that you won’t realize right off the bat. Yes, it takes time to get it going right. It was downright annoying the first couple of days, but like anything, keep trying it gets easier and easier. The spinner came with 2 starter cords and I’ve lost one already when it flew off after a particularly hard pull. Another surprise was realizing that I’m feeling it in my bicep too. When I get up to some real extended time for multiple times a day, I think I’ll be seeing some major toning up all over my arm, not just the wrist and forearm. Need to workout your arms a bit? I highly recommend the NSD Power Essential Spinner as an introduction to toning and a prelim to lifting.

More than a novelty, but still not the best
First, let me say that I got this as a gift. I had been eyeing it myself for well over a year and just couldn't pull the trigger because this really doesn't look like any other training tool out there. Still, I like new and I'm willing to try just about anything once. So I was stuck in limbo until my wife decided that it had hung out in the wish list long enough. My impression was that this was marketed as a grip strengthening tool of some sort. That's probably a miss on the part of the marketing department. What it does is more like mud running for the forearm muscles. It's an endurance trainer with resistance, and actually it does a good job at this once you catch the drift. The circular motion that the wrist must perform to make this work seems like it would also be good for rehab or warm ups if done in shorter durations and at slower speeds. So, in the right context this becomes a great tool. But it isn't really a grip strengthening tool unless you have the strength of a toddler. How it works: essentially this is a fly wheel. As RPMs increase that fly wheel resists changes of direction (centrifugal forces, Newtonian physics... Science!). This is what creates the resistance aspect. The circular motion of the wrist keeps the fly wheel spinning which creates an endurance aspect. Stop rotating your wrist and the fun ends as the fly wheel slows. Bottom line, it's not a bad little fitness gadget, but probably has limited use outside a physical therapy application unless you are in a sport where lots of forearm endurance is key... Like rock climbing. There isn't time to do everything, and what time you have is probably better spent doing something else. That's why I gave it 4 stars, fun and works... But what's the point?

Really gets my forearm tired
I was always curious about these gyroscopes when I saw them at sporting goods stores over the years. When I read that the quality had gone down in the ones being sold in stores and also saw that this one by NSD includes a pull string to get it going I decided to pull the trigger and try it out. I think the pull string is important. I never enjoyed trying to get the lesser models up to speed. With the draw string I had it going right away and quickly got it really humming. That's when I noticed how hard it was getting to rotate my wrist and how tired I was getting within 30 seconds. You can take it slow and easy and go for quite a while but if you really want to push it then you can get the RPM's up and be completely exhausted in a minute. Then I pass it to my other hand and keep the spin going, back and forth between hands for a few sets. I've really enjoyed just pushing a different set of muscles and trying to strengthen my wrists to avoid carpel tunnel injuries. I would recommend this product because it's simple and it works, and also makes it a game of really getting it spinning fast. For even more of a game you might want to try the one with the RPM display but I didn't think the cost was worth it overall.

Poor quality assurance and becomes a worthless paperweight!!
Very poor quality. One string broke after two uses. Second string is missing one tip so it’s only half working. I would suggest finding a better model.

Decent, but not long-lasting
My job involves a lot of keyboard use, resulting in occasional wrist pain, so I've been looking at various wrist exercisers to try to help. A gyroscopic wrist exerciser sounded more fun than some of the other tools out there, but I had never used one before, and couldn't quite justify a $50 purchase of something that might or might not work, so I purchased this (relatively) cheap one. It worked well enough, and helped my wrists, even though I only remembered to use it once or twice a week. Well enough, in fact, that I purchased one for a friend who was having more severe wrist pain. He took it to work with him, using it multiple times a day. Within a week he was no longer experiencing wrist pain. Within two weeks, he had managed to wear it out from constant use; its operation became noisy, and he could no longer get it started spinning without the string. I since went on to buy one of the fancier, metal gyroscopic wrist exercisers (the Ironpower force two). It was much quieter, much smoother, easier to start, and gave a more strenuous workout. It also has replaceable parts, in case the plastic rings it slides around on get worn out. The NSD Power Essential Spinner is a decent entry-level wrist exerciser, but it seems to have a limited lifespan. It is fine for occasional use, and a good way to tell if the gyroscopic spinners are for you, but don't be surprised if it wears out.

Helps with wrist strength
Just like the DynaBee from the 70's. Easy to start with or without the string.
