Really good guitar book for learning USABLE chords quickly
this is really a good book for learning basic guitar chords and their upper structures quickly. Lots of exercises. Do them all and you'll definitely improve!!

The best rhythm guitar method I've seen so far
Of course, this book is not perfect, there's some flaws, for example: - there's a gap between the first seven chapters and the rest of the book, the first seven chapters are pretty accesible for a beguiner but, starting in chapter eigth the level required is raised a lot so a beguiner may have a lot of trouble finding his way trougth the examples. - Some aspects doesn't have enought explanation, some chapters may have 3 pages or so and you feel like there's something missing to fully "get" the idea. Eventhought, this is the best book I've seen so far about rhythm guitar, it is by far the most complete in terms of aspects of rhythm playing and has a fairly good amount of chords to show the student. This is not a book for guys just looking around, it is designed for serious study for a reletive long period (It might take nine months to a year of a consistent practice to absorve the content of the book). Botton line, if you want to learn rhythm guitar a little bit further than the average ballad to impress a girl, this is your book. One piece of advice: No book can stand on his own, to fully integrate the content of the book I suggest the Tom Kolb "Chord Progressions" as a companion, and maybe some others as your hability improves.

A great book for a dedicated student (not necessarily for beginners)
This is a comprehensive book that focuses on learning all the chords you will need to know to play chordal rhythms. There is no discussion of riffs or much in the ways of technique. There is one chapter on basic arpeggiating. The focus is on strumming, chords, rhythms, harmony, etc. Rhythm Guitar is not necessarily a book for beginners. You will need to know how to read rhythms and music notation to work through this book. I am a guitar teacher and do use the first few chapters with my beginner students. I do not start them right away on this though. Usually after a month or so after learning the basics. I couldn't imagine them trying to do this without a teacher. It would be confusing. The CD does not include recordings of every example, just what you will need. If you are looking for the CD as a "play along", this won't cut it. This book does not teach you songs. It teaches you the chords you will need to play the ones you want though. If you want to learn songs only, this is not the book for you. What this book does provide is a technical and well put together way of learning chords, developing the ability to change between them, playing them with different strumming patterns, and how they fit in style wise.

Amount of material is mind-boggling
Been playing guitar for 20 years. Been teaching overseas multiple years as well. And I must say after looking at TONS of material that this is one of the best for rhythm guitar. I have read the book over multiple times now (which includes practicing) and I find that as you do it more often, the material gradually soaks in. I've had this kind of experience with learning jazz theory as well (i.e, Mark Levine's Jazz Theory and Jazz Piano Book) where repetitive reading and review unearths more treasures. Honestly, the material is not entirely for beginners, but everyone has different methods of assimilating knowledge into practical (i.e., jamming with ease). Some beginners will need an instructor. Others will not. It's, of course, always better to learn in person from one whose skill set tops yours. In summary, I vouch for the content of the book to be high-quality and excellent. Be patient though. It'll definitely take some time and patience.

absolutely thorough
i purchased this book 4 days ago and started with the first two chapters just 2 hours ago and i am absolutely satisfied. I bought 2 other books previously, since i just started to learn the guitar by myself last June, i can say this book has the important basic information and is a must.

Really cool if you're into rhythm guitar.
I was not that enthusiastic with this book...but I was always curious (specially after the good reviews)..finally I decided to buy it and I was not wrong. This book is quite deep in rhythm exercises and chord voicings. As other reviewers posted after the sixth chapter thigs become more advanced so it requires good commitment.Really good!

Playing Rhythm guitar Vs Musical notation
This may be a great resource for someone who's good with musical notation. For the rest i say, either learn to read music notation first, or don't waste your time on this book......and many others that have to do with musical notation.

Very practical and comprehensive
This book is a very practical and comprehensive introduction to guitar chords. It is an ideal book for beginners and possibly for more advanced players looking to review and hone their chord and rhythm knowledge. It gets very quickly up to speed and by the end of the first two chapters you have covered the 21 basic chords which will allow you to play thousands of songs! Then come barre chords, power chords and jazz chords such as major 7ths, 6ths and 9ths. It is arranged in about 36 lessons and would keep you going for a year at least if you want to cover it fully. It covers 'generic' rhythm guitar i.e. rock, folk, blues, funk, country, jazz and so on. A particular strength are the well thought out and innovative 'basic moves' exercises - two and three chord changes using the new chords just introduced. The difficulty with rhythm guitar is not making the chord shapes but rather changing between them quickly enough - the 'basic moves' give plenty of material to work on and are followed by longer chord progressions for each chapter's material. There is plenty of this material and it's ideal for brushing up your playing as well as learning. My only, very small, criticism is that it is not the most exciting book ever, just very practical and effective - one to be used rather than just read. Rhythm variations are also covered fully and can be applied to the chord progressions. I would recommend this book both to anyone just starting guitar and to more advanced players looking for a review as it covers what you need to know and then some. It will give you the basic chords for many styles.
