The Victron Energy VE-Networking System
Update (11/18/23): The VE app keeps historical data for 180 days, and will also generate graphs (e.g. voltage and temperature) [pics added]. Update (2/12/23): Current inventory of VE products: (2) 100V/50A, (2) 100V/30A, (1) 100V/20A, (1) SmartShunt IP67 (newer), (1) SmartShunt (older), (1) BatterySense. Best feature is the VE.Smart networking feature, which allows the components to work together to optimize charging of the battery bank. Summary: This review is for the Smart Battery Sense monitor, which is a bluetooth voltage and temperature monitoring device. This has voltage and temperature monitoring. Whereas the SmartShunt can measure current too, but lacks the temperature ( can be added with an extra sensor ). Current solar/PV system specs: 4kW of panels (most are 100W panels); 24-volt, 21kWh marine AGM battery bank; 3500W inverter; VE SmartSolar MPPT controllers: 20A (one), 30A (two), 50A (one); battery sense monitor (one). Observations: Currently have the battery monitor and two current shunts (one for battery, and one in energy monitor mode to see the current draw into the inverter). One of Victron's best features is the ability to network the controllers together, so that you don't over charge your batteries. I am running four (4) VE MPPT controllers, and 75% of the panels feed into those, but I have a few other test MPPT controllers as well, so having the capability for the VEs to stop charging (absorption and float) is very important to prevent over charging your batteries. Recommendation: If you're trying to determine if the Victron Energy family of components is worth the extra money, I would say yes, based on the ability to integrate different components (mppt, battery monitors [current, voltage]). If you have a simple system, and do not need bluetooth monitoring, there are other solar/PV controllers for less. Pros: VE iPhone/iPad app works well; VE networking. Cons: None for now. Conclusion: At $40, rating this 5-stars. So cool and worth it
Bought this because it's victron and they are the best and recommended by many DIY installers and professionals. I bought this item for it's intended use and I can say 100% that it works as intended and super easy to setup. Because it's bluetooth there can be some weird connectivity issues but I don't blame this device I blame bluetooth because of how finicky it can be on different devices. Anyway, the value for the money and the accuracy which I compare to a Craftsman multimeter from 25+ years ago and it's right on point with the volt measurements which are graphed in real time. The one thing I don't like is there seems to be either no ability to zoom into the the time window if the peaks and valleys are low and high. I couldn't find a way to narrow down when my battery went from no draw to draw. I could see the valley but I couldn't see the peak even if pinching my fingers on the screen like I would have expected to work. All good, still give this a 5 stars because it's just awesome and so is the price.

If you can’t control the heat, you will fry your battery . Get a BMS
If you do not have a BMS on your battery, this works surprisingly well and even has a video on how to connect. Good value, great product so far. I got mine stuffed between two Tesla modules. I will add a picture of what you’re trying to avoid as well and why this is important to have.

Victron mazing!
I hooked this product up as soon as I built my battery bank, it is very simple to setup, and use. For the cost it is a wonderful value giving the ability to keep you victron system updated with battery temperature, as well as voltage protection. I've used this along side a Victron Smart Shunt so I can keep the Shunt second input reserved for Midpoint Voltage Deviation on my 24v battery bank. Otherwise personally I would have got the Shunt temp sensor, but for the fact it allowed me to add an additional function, and read out to my system. Would definitely recommend to someone in a similar situation where they want to keep midpoint Deviation between 12v batteries as data logged in your system, or just to give easy Bluetooth readings to your phone.

Essential for many installations, and various brands of equipment
These are the most flexible way to check your 12 to 48 volt batteries. I now have 4 sets to keep track of the electric boat, solar panels, home generator, and my motorcycle. From my chair I can review it all on one phone app. The history is useful as it covers months if reviewed occasionally. Some batteries have this, but at a bigger price. A recent upgrade shows these will always have the best data, easy to install and to find.

Solved my voltage drop and battery temp issues
I do a lot of road trips, camping, photography gigs, and side work, which means my car basically doubles as a mobile charging station. I’m constantly running a laptop, charging drone batteries, camera batteries, my phone, and sometimes using a 400W inverter. While driving, no big deal. But parked? That load can drain a battery fast enough to become a real problem. I’ve had enough dead battery moments to finally invest in a small 200W solar setup with a Victron charge controller just to help keep things alive. The problem was my Victron controller is mounted in the rear of the vehicle near the inverter, while the battery is up front. That creates two major issues: Voltage drop between the controller/load and the actual battery Massive temperature differences My trunk might be sitting around 60°F while the battery under the hood is cooking at 120–130°F. As you can imagine, that makes accurate charging pretty difficult when the controller is reading conditions from the wrong place. Voltage and temp inaccuracies can absolutely lead to improper charging or overcharging. That’s where the Smart Battery Sense actually earns its keep. Once installed and tied into VE Smart Networking, the controller can finally read real battery voltage and temperature directly from the battery itself instead of making bad assumptions from the trunk. That alone made a huge difference. Charging stages like bulk and float are now handled much more accurately, and I’ve had far fewer concerns about overcharging due to bad temp compensation. For my use case, this solved a legitimate real-world problem. What I like: Accurate battery voltage reading directly at the source Proper temperature compensation where it actually matters Better charge stage control Easy integration with existing Victron gear Great for mobile/off-grid vehicle setups What I don’t like: There are cheaper Bluetooth battery monitors out there You’re definitely paying extra for the Victron ecosystem Historical data isn’t stored well in the app unless you reconnect to the device Data granularity drops off pretty quickly over time Would really like to see controller voltage and Smart Sense voltage side-by-side for easier voltage drop monitoring, instead if you are in the charge controller you only see charge controller voltage, but you do see temp at least. So while the hardware itself works very well, the software side could definitely use improvement. Overall: If you’re running a Victron setup and have longer cable runs, temperature differences, or mobile power demands, this thing absolutely improves charging accuracy and battery protection. It’s overpriced for what it is, but it solves real problems and integrates well enough to justify it if you’re already invested in Victron. Not perfect, but for serious use, it’s been worth it.

Great, Bluetooth range not as good as other Victron products
So far so good. This will give me some added peace of mind, being able to monitor my batteries temperature in the coming Idaho winter. I’d mark off half a star if I could for the Bluetooth range. It’s less than the SmartSolar controller, and I have to be within 10 feet for it to register. It’s mildly inconvenience, but not a dealbreaker. Overall very happy with it.
