Has anyone raised the lowest shelf to allow for storage containers to slide underneath the unit? If you have, which storage containers did you use?

Yes, I have my lower shelf raised. I keep a 30 gallon garbage can under it which is 24 inches high, so I have the bottom shelf raised 30 inches high from the floor. It is still sturdy and I love it.

Can I make this less than 72" tall? I have a sloping ceiling where this is going and at it's lowest point it is exactly 72".

This is actually 73.5" tall with the feet (~78" with the wheels). You COULD cut the vertical supports with a hack saw but I wouldn't recommend doing so.

These come in a variety of sizes but this one is 38" wide, 18" deep, 72 inches tall.A hint for assembly:Get a helper, these pieces are awkward and heavy.There is a 2 piece, black plastic, cuff that fits in a ridge where you want your shelf to be.The chrome shelf then slides over it, holding the shelf in place. I want you to know you can NOT completely cover this cuff with the shelf piece just apply the shelf until it is snug.About 1/2 inch will remain visible below the shelf ring. That is "okay", it will tighten its self according to the weight added to the shelf.
