I really like this safe, it's just perfect for what I wanted. That being said, it isn't perfect in and of itself and that's why I deducted a star. This safe will certainly keep kids out, but I'm sure a determined burglar could pry it open with a good-sized screwdriver eventually. Or else completely pry it off of the nightstand it's mounted to. If you're leaving home without your pistol, I would recommend putting it in something more secure. But as a handy place to store a handgun overnight, or even just anytime you're at home, it's great. The fingerprint recognition doesn't work, but I didn't expect it to. Apple couldn't figure it out for iPhones so I didn't figure it would be dependable in an $80 dollar gun safe. I don't miss it much though. I can enter the 5-digit code very quickly and the safe pops open in a way that makes the weapon very easy to grasp. There's even a dim blue light that comes on when the door opens so you can find the pistol grip even if the room is dark. Some of the setup is a little difficult because the battery storage and buttons you need to access are inside the safe and I found it a bit tight for my large hands. But, I got through it with a minimum of blood. Overall, I'm impressed with the safe and I'm very glad I bought it. I think it's a great value.

The installation process is very simple, and the included screws are very sturdy, firmly fixed to the wall without any movement. I have this mounted under my computer desk out. It's out of sight - but not out of reach. For over 6 years it has protected my 9mm full size locked and loaded automatic. I just need to pull back the hammer after drawing the gun. I've pressed the 1 key for a few seconds to disable the beep - but the safe does whir when it opens - but in less than a second after the whir it's in my hand. What I found difficult now after I've had to change the battery after 6 years is the difficulty to change them. I tried to change the 4 batteries without unmounting the safe from its bracket. Did alright for the first three batteries - but the 4th sprang out of my hand and lodged itself behind the hinge mechanism where I couldn't get to it. I had not gone back to Amazon to get the operating instructions - but I felt around inside the safe and found the thumbscrew on the right side of my safe and unscrewed it and then lifted up on the safe to release it from its two bracket side hooks. This allowed me to turn the safe upside down and get the battery out of the hinge. I then changed that last battery and slid the 4 battery case back into it's hinged bracket. Having done that I was far from success as in the last six years I've aged so it was difficult for me to get low enough and hook the safe back on its mount. I asked the wife to help me with that and being petite she, at first struggled, but successfully got it back on the hooks. She couldn't get the thumbscrew to align with the bracket though. We decided to wait for daylight and start again. However, after getting the instructions on how to program the safe from the Amazon this product page - I tried several times and was able to securely tighten the thumbscrew to the bracket to prevent lift off of the safe from the bracket. As I was programming the safe, I found that the safe wouldn't securely close. I wondered it the lock bracket was bent. It wasn't. I just needed to try the code to unlock the safe, even though it was already opened, and the lock bracket realigned when I pushed the safe closed. Despite my difficulty with the battery change - I'm giving this safe a 5 rating. For 6.5 years it has promptly opened whenever I perceived a threat with just my feel of the buttons. It would be nice to have a low battery indicator - but it opened for me after the batteries were nearly dead. So I guess the low battery indicator is - if once you put in the correct combination - it doesn't open. Try again until it does - then change the batteries.

My dad is getting old and worried that he might forget the password. So I specially chose this one. The fingerprint reader is really convenient. Just a gentle touch and it opens. It's very reliable! The operation is simple and easy to use. My dad can master it in just one try. Seeing him confidently putting his beloved gun inside and the satisfied smile on his face, I know I made the right choice. This gift shows my love for him and provides him with the best security.

Cons: First, whoever engineered the mount using that plastic thumbscrew should be slapped. There are literally dozens of ways that could have been done better. After an hour of trying to get the thumbscrew started, I ended up replacing the thumbscrew with a Phillips head screw, and used a screw driver that was long enough and thin enough to reach the screw from the little hole on the opposite side of the case. Why is this not just a spring loaded clip that locks when you slide the safe in place, and has a simple press release only accessible from the inside of the safe? Second, the fingerprint reader has a less than 50% success rate. Even after taking someone else's suggestion and adding multiple entries of the same finger, it still only works about 50% of the time. I certainly won't rely on it in an emergency. Pros: First, the safe and lock mechanism are sturdy enough to provide adequate deterrent for my needs. Second, the push button unlock mechanism has worked 100% of the time and will be my primary method of opening the safe in an emergency. Third, this is the only auto open safe that I found on Amazon that would accommodate my pistol. It's a standard sized pistol with an underbarrel light, a mini red dot, and a magwell. With a little modification to the foam insert, it fits well. I spent quite awhile comparing all of the auto open safes on Amazon and even with its flaws, this appears to be the best of the bunch.
