A Unique Keepsake
I ordered the Helping Hands Casting Kit to make a family souvenir and I am very happy with the result! The cast I made is not perfect, but I like it because it shows my son’s little fingers very vividly. It is a unique keepsake. The kit is large as it contains the bucket for making the cast. There are two main steps to the process: create the mold (with an alginate mixture—it feels like rubber when it sets) and then fill the mold with the casting mixture. The instructions can seem daunting at first, but it actually doesn’t take long. It IS a little messy, so make sure you use a plastic sheet. And make sure you’ve got what you need handy because timing is important.Making the alginate mold was fun. I was surprised that my son was able to stay still for the time required for it to set (about eight minutes). My problem was when it came to casting; I focused more on the time rather than on the consistency of the casting mixture. If I could do it again, I would have started pouring as soon as the mixture started looking like paint (as instructed). By the time I stopped mixing and started pouring, the mixture was too thick and I had to fill the mold quickly. As a result, some parts of the mold didn’t fill properly, but the reserve mixture helped to fill in small holes. So, my main piece of advice is to focus on the consistency of the casting mixture rather than the time; do not overmix as I did. But even with my mistakes, it’s a pretty neat product. One last piece of advice: don’t use your nice kitchenware. If possible, use a paint stick and a plastic bowl or old ice cream container for the casting mixture. I used a plastic Ikea bowl with a helpful pouring lip.

Wasted money!
This is the 2nd kit I ordered (first one was a different brand that I loved), this one literally went in the trash. Total waste of time and money. I followed the directions exactly like it said. The plaster started hardening in less then a minute (it says 5-6). I thought it just needed more water (like the directions suggest) so I added a little more. Within 2 minutes it was hardened and then of course can't go into the mold. So the entire thing was a waste of time and money. Very very disappointed. I will reorder the original one I bought that was worth every penny I paid!

Garbage product
Worst item I’ve ever ordered. Complete waste of money. Mold set faster then the time the instructions said. Had to throw the whole thing into the garbage.

Plaster sucks
It was ok until the plaster. We had to go buy more plaster because it became super hard when we mixed it and never was liquidy

Casting Mix Dried Too Fast
The first part of the kit, making the mold, worked as described in the instructions. However the second step was a disaster. The casting mix dried while it was still being mixed, and hardened in the bowl (it set up in less than 2 minutes). The mix was from China and was either defective or too old. I had to go to a craft store to buy another bag of casting mix to complete the project (the craft store mix was from USA, and it worked much better).
