Great Emergency Knife
I purchased this after seeing my nephew with a Tac-Force knife, and realizing how handy it would be to have one of these emergency first-response knives in case of an accident or my daughter locking herself in the car. I think originally this knife was over $30, and the Amazon price was $26, and the day I purchased this there was a lightning deal on a Gerber Bear-Grylls tool, but it turned out that it wasn't the Ultimate Survival Knife (which is what I had hoped to get.) I had this on my wish list prior to that, and the only thing I didn't like about this compared to the others was this didn't have the emergency whistle, lanyard, sheath with built-in sharpening stone, or fire starter like the Ultimate Survival Knife...and it didn't have spring-assisted open like the Tac-Forces. However; I popped over to my wish list, and saw that the price had gone down to around $13, so I immediately ordered this with the Pocket-Pal sharpener, and my total was still just over $20...so I added a couple humidifier packs for my humidor (fulfilled by Amazon for free shipping,) and just waited for the arrival.) When I got the knife I was more than pleased. The construction and quality of the blade and sharpness were beyond my expectations. I immediately banged the glass breaker into my solid-wood coffee table my wife received as a gift from her grandmother, and there was no give anywhere on the knife. There's a little allen or hex-wrench twist on the side to adjust tension on the blade to make it easier or harder to flip open, but it arrived at just the perfect tension for me (too hard for my 4-year-old daughter to flip open but easy enough for me to snap open with one thumb.) This knife is a work of art, and I'm sure it will be handy in any emergency situation and good for self-defense in case of a home invasion. Also, in retrospect, I'm glad that its not a spring-assist open; that's just one more thing that WILL eventually break, making the knife defective and (at least to me,) annoying. I am completely happy with this purchase, and considering the quality of the knife, AMAZED at the low price. I mean really; a Smith & Wesson knife for right around $13...lol, where else but Amazon? Thanks again, Amazon. One more thing, Indiana just signed an agreement to be the 4th state to start charging taxes on Amazon purchases beginning in 2014. My brother is more than livid about the whole issue, and I'm not pleased about it myself, but if you continue to offer such great deals compared to local store shopping, I'll be more than happy to pay taxes on purchases through your website; it will still be an amazing deal compared to walking into the local Walmart to purchase the same things for $20-$30 more.

Excellent knife; much cheaper than similar alternatives
I'm a law enforcement officer, and I was looking for a new knife. I'm also a father of two, so the diaper budget gets priority over the knife budget! I uploaded a picture (with the ruler) if you are curious about the overall size. It's about 8" open, 4.5" closed. I purchased this knife after shopping at various sporting goods/police supply stores and Wal-Mart for a decent knife. Many of the knives in Wal-Mart were between $15 and $45, and some of the knives in the other stores approached or exceed $200 for the brand-names. This knife feels sturdy and a bit heavy, which, in my opinion, is a plus. I believe that you will be able to keep a firm grip on this knife with wet or sweaty hands. All four of my fingers just fit within the curves of the handle when the knife is open. The black-colored portion of the handle is knurled, which should also help you maintain a secure grip. The belt/pocket clip holds on well without feeling too tight. When the knife is open, the blade does not "wobble." Aside from an excellent price, I chose this knife because it includes three extra features: a partially serrated edge, a glass breaker (a small steel point on the handle), and a seat belt cutter. The second two features could be life savers. The heft will help if you do have to break auto glass, which is can be difficult to break without the right tool. Thanks to the disc on the spine of the knife, this knife can be opened with one hand if you take your time. It is not spring assisted, but you couldn't expect this feature for under $20. Actually, I didn't think about it until the knife was in my hand--the disc is a great feature. You could easily open the knife by pinching the blade with your opposite hand with or without this disc; however, the disc allows you to easily work the knife with wet/cold/slightly numb fingers or gloves. I noticed that the knife is assembled with star-drive screws instead of rivets. Time will tell if these screws will work loose. The knife is manufactured in China by a company called Taylor brands. The S&W name appears on the knife and on the box but nowhere on the instructions/warranty info. I don't see any specific "stainless steel" markings on the knife or in the instructions, which recommend occasional lubrication to prevent rust. Overall, the knife appears to be built well. Considering the extra features and the price, I would recommend.

Great Value - Very Well Made
What prompted me to look at "First Responder Knives" was my wife's wish for me to purchase her one of those "Emergency Hammers" that can break the window and cut a seatbelt so you can get out of a wreck. Rather than get her something that might not ever be used, or be difficult to swing in a damaged and wrecked car, I thought the ideal solution would be a First Responder Knife. The SWFRS has a clip which can be clipped to a visor within reach if the car rolls, and will hold it in place. It can be held firmly in her hand (it is slightly small for me, since I have large hands, but still can be held comfortably and securely in mine.) A simple swing and it will shatter an automotive glass window with the strong metal tip. The seatbelt cutter appears to be easy to use and very sharp. The knife blade is large and locks into place firmly. My wife can open the knife with her thumb one handed quite easily too, and the lock mechanism (a liner lock) works well and again is easy for her to use, and she has no worries of the blade closing on her fingers. From my point of view I really like this knife (we bought two, one for each car). It is very well made, and appears that it could be totally disassembled with torx bits and hex wrenches. The knife blade opens smoothly with a snap role of my thumb, and locks into place and feels like a solid piece of steel. The pocket clip works well, and is bent over in such a way that pocketing it should not loosen the screws. As for the size, it fits my hand fairly well, and like one of the reviews stated "it begs to be held." The black portion, the stock, appears to be zytex. The blade is sharp too. It is very well designed. If Smith and Wesson is reading this, glow in the dark plastic stocks would be an even nicer touch. The only thing I do not like about the knife is the serrated edge. If used, it should keep its edge for a long time, except serrated edges cannot be sharpened easily. However, this knife is better made than knives I have paid $80 for. I highly recommend this product. It is well made, thoughtfully designed, and inexpensive enough so you could put one in every car you own.

Sometimes Hard To Open
Likes: From the looks to the ergonomics, this knife is great. I love the functionality of it as well as the way it feels in the hand. Your hand won't be slipping forward or lose grip with the way this knife fits snuggled in the hand. Great cut for the forefinger as well once opened. I also like the serrated like padding in the grip area and it's location to the palm. Lastly, the knife just looks good! Especially when opened. And though this may not be a factor for some, for me it is. Simple enough without all the flash. Yet, different enough to stand out. Dislikes: I can't stand that it seems as though I have to break it in. What I mean by that is the knife, when closed is sometimes "sticky" just to initially open. There seems to be a small bearing holding it in. Once I'm passed that the knife opens smoothly with no problem. Still, if I go to open in the knife in sort of a relaxed way, it really is a struggle with just a thumb. I've never had a knife do that before. And though the thumb wheel that helps open it is in a good place, it being stuck like this actually doesn't help with it's placement. I just feel I shouldn't receive a knife that, like a good shoe, I have to break in. It could also stand to be sharper. I've had a S&W knife before years ago. It was laser sharp! This one, so so. I mean it's sharp but definitely could be better. Not sure if I just got a alright version of this knife or not. Conclusion: Aside from the "sticky" opening problem and it not being as sharp as I would like (and expected), I think this is a good knife for the price. Yes, there are better, higher end knives out there. Thus I'm not expecting the world from this. Yet, for a budget type thing, this isn't bad.

Great Knife, Excellent Value
I normally won't write a review until I've had something for some time. It seems pointless to rate something with which you've had no practical experience. However, in the 12 hours that I have had this knife, I have tested it and used in in more "experimental" applications than most other blades I've owned. After 6 hours, I took my SOG Flash 2 out of my pocket, oiled it for storage and put it away. This S&W is extremely well crafted, feels great in your hand (it's heavy, but it feels right), it comes sharpened with a razor sharp edge and looks great. It feels like a $60 knife and I paid $16.50, with free shipping. Only 1 negative... There is no lock to keep it closed. It has a large(1/4" dia) knurled disc to assist with opening, and potentially could open unintentionally in your pocket or belt line if the disc catches on something. (Probably why I should wait on my review) However, because of the value and craftmanship, I let it keep its 5th star. For $16.50, a knife of this quality is a steal! Additional Features: Seatbelt/paracord cutter has its own blade, it does not utilize the knife blade. Hardened tip for breaking automobile glass, and the belt clip is long enough and tight enough to clip securely to any pocket , belt or even military style web-gear. Comes in a sealed plastic pouch inside a cardboard box. No sheath is included.

Functional Knife on the Cheap
This knife is cheap. And by cheap I mean a great bargain!. Sure, it isn't the greatest knife in the world, but it is FAR from the worst and for the price you really can't beat it. It's a large knife with a great serrated edge and is perfect for an everyday carry or in a toolkit, tackle box, or first aid bag. I've sharpened it once already and so far the new edge is holding up well. I'd highly recommend this t anyone who wants a nice, reliable, heavy knife with a locking blade. If you are in the market for a knife that doesn't look like it is meant to kill someone but still want a quality blade, this is your knife. It is NOT a combat knife. This is a utility knife and it is good at its job.

Perfect knife, perfect price.
When I purchased this knife I was simply looking for a one handed opening knife to keep in my pocket that would mostly be used as a box cutter at work. I found this one and with the perks of a glass breaker and seat-belt cutter, I really couldn't help but make the purchase. I have been more than pleased with this knife. It is easily opened and closed with one hand, which is almost ridiculously convenient. The pocket clip has plenty of tension to hold itself in place, while still being able to hook it on with one hand. The weight of the knife is great, not too heavy and not too light. The weight coupled with the texture of the grip make it easy to hold onto the knife during whatever you are using it for. I've owned quite a few knives over time, from bowie knives to buck knives, and plenty of folding knives. I can say without hesitation that this has been my favorite folding knife I have ever owned.

Not worth the $13
I decided to grab this knife because it was cheap and had the Smith and Wesson brand name on it. My opinion is it is not worth the price. the knife looks like it is not painted in pictures but there is definitely a coating which is bad because cheap painted knives flake their paint off if they are used with any regularity... I was hoping to avoid this. When the knife arrived it was stiff and after a couple days feels normal to open and close so I believe in a few weeks this knife is likely to become a loose wobbly mess due to it slowly loosening up as some others have mentioned in their reviews. the seatbelt cutter is garbage. this was a selling point for me but when it arrived I realized it is off center in the handle so it is right under one side and comes all the way to the edge of the hook meaning I could see myself cutting my hand if it had to grip this too tightly if it weren't for the fact that the seatbelt cutter is dull! (that is discussed below) the most un forgivable issue in my opinion however is that it arrived just barely sharper than a butter knife. This knife and the included seatbelt cutter are so dull that a paper napkin tears usually in a spot the blade is not making contact. The reason that this is such a problem is that the partial serration on the blade not only makes sharpening it a hassle but I have no idea how you would go about sharpening a seatbelt cutter since the entire idea is it is recessed far enough in that it does not cut you randomly. this knife will require tightening a couple times a year and a full set of sharpening tools to make it useful. If you happen to be fine with that and don't mind the probability of the coating on the knife flaking off this is the perfect knife for you. I suspect that if you are picking up a $13 knife you likely are not wanting to put in the time and energy to make this knife useful. If you are buying this as a gift and none of that matters I still recommend rolling the dice on one of the other knives but if your not interested this might be a great stocking stuffer.
