This is the 3rd best spincaster I've used in 30 years of fishing. Better quality than my second, though, overall. You won't get a better one for the price. Casts very smooth, very good distance with the right lures/ weight, and the build quality is great. A little heavy, but you can tell it's solid and will last. Very happy with this spincaster at this price, I'd pay more 😆

This is an update to my original review. I have purchased two of these reels and they are better than I expected. They are well designed and manufactured. They run as smoothly as advertised. I fished with one of the reels for a while and enjoyed it without exception. However I just used the second reel this week. The reel performs as well as the first but the fishing line that came installed was a disappointment. The line had so many nicks in it that it broke every place I checked it. I’m sure this is just a one off situation but I would check it out before I fished with it. I have to replace this line at my expense.

Well I’m really torn on how to rate this reel. I just used it for the first time and was initially very impressed! I was casting further than ever before. I had dozens and dozens of casts with no problems! Then it happened. I made a cast and the line suddenly went taught and the lure dropped a few yards from the dock. I tried to reel it in but the whole thing was bound up. I had retrieved the lure before it had a chance to snag on a rock on the lake bottom and then removed the housing from the reel to figure out what was happening. The line had wrapped around the shaft forward of the spool! Not only that but I noticed a loop of line protruding from the spool. (See my photo) I had to cut a bunch of line in order to get the line off from around that shaft. Then I pulled off yards and yards of additional line to find the origin of that loop. I took off way more line than I had been able to cast out so this loop was clearly a result of a problem when the line was applied at the factory. A lot of critical reviews seem to note flaws with the spool being pre-wrapped with line. Maybe they should just sell the reel with a spool of line and let people wrap it themselves. After I spent at least a half hour correcting this mess I finally got back to fishing. The reel performed well for the remainder of the time. It really does provide for a great cast. You just might want to remove the line it comes with and apply your own. Update: KastKing contacted me regarding my concerns with the prespooled line and offered to send me replacement line. As such I’m modifying my rating. I’m supportive of any company that stands behind their products and offers solutions without excuses!

This reel performed exceptionally well on our 5 day fishing trip and it landed numerous Bass and even a surprise Northern Pike. It feels well constructed and the bearings make it super smooth, my favorite feature is the reversible handle..

Love this reel! It's so much better than a zebco 33 as far as quality. And the price doesn't break your bank either.

I've got some nerve damage that makes using a spinning reel a bit too difficult and I can only use baitcasters on "good days", which are few and far between. I've taken to using my little Dock Demon for pan fishing and a trusty Zebco 33 for pretty much anything else - but I wanted more. So I bought the Kastking Brutus. I received it 3 days ago. First day out, skunked. Casts like a dream (even weightless stickbaits, which my 33 had issues with) and retrieves so smoothly and quietly that I couldn't believe it at first. Yesterday, failed to set the hook twice because I wasn't paying enough attention. Today I hooked one of the biggest fish I've ever fought - and the drag held up. It held up so well that before I could lower it the hook bent out almost straight and I lost the fish. I'm very pleasantly surprised by that... yeah, the fish got away, but now I know the Brutus can hold on until the terminal tackle gives out. Also caught some nice crappie. Pros: Easy casting, smooth and buttery retrieve. Can easily cast weightless rigs. Cons: Has some odd 'catches' when casting every so often. I think this is due to the absolutely insane line twist that it shipped with. It's easily solved - take off the line, put new line on. I'll be doing that tomorrow. I'd say every twentieth cast or so was spoiled by that line twist and odd 'catch' in mid-cast that stopped it cold or brought it snapping back to me. If you don't want to take the line off and put new on, the snags and such are easily cleared, but you'll be doing it fairly often. That might seem like it's heavy on the cons, but honestly it's not. Pretty much every reel that comes pre-spooled is going to have this issue and you shouldn't let it be a deal-breaker for you. If you're in the market for a quality spincast reel at a mid-tier price you can not go wrong with the Brutus. I'm tempted to get a second one to spool with lighter line. Edit: After a few fishing excursions I've noticed the handle, even at its tightest, is a little loose. You will definitely feel it while reeling in. Also, the line catching while casting was not solved by respooling the reel - it still does it, though not as often. These things aren't enough to make me dock another star, but they're worth knowing about. Edit, November 18, 2020 : Well, determined that the line 'catching' or 'sticking' while casting was due to an issue with the spool. It was ever-so-slightly out of line, which was likely caused with how I was storing and carrying my reels at the time. It has since seen some maintenance on a couple occasions and it works like a dream now. I have a number of baitcasting and spinning reels but this is the one reel I always keep on a rod, ready to fish with. Quite frankly I don't know why they bothered with the Cadet model, it's not that much cheaper and this thing is a freaking beauty. Maintain it regularly and it will serve you well.
