Nice winch
Excellent little winch. Well made and has a nice strap and solid hook. The lock/ unlock is a little different, but once I got it figured out it worked like a champ. I am using this on a small trailer to cary a 500' hovercraft, so needed it to winch the machine onto 10' skids from level ground. Was not sure how well it would work, but it surprised me. Worked great. On my 10' x 2" x 6" skids I also installed "Marine Sliders", slick plastic runners. This helped quite a bit winching up the craft. Good value for the price on this winch. Found a similar winch locally for nearly twice as much, so I think the price is exceptional. Five stars. ================ 10/7/14 Update: While I still like this winch and consider it a good value, I have found two "anomalies" with it so far. First, when winching a boat up onto the trailer, you need to pay attention to the winch strap as if it is not winding on the reel straight it can curl and double under itself. You just need to pay attention to this and keep the strap straight. The second item I just discovered was the pin holding the crank handle; the opposite side of this pin has a bushing installed through the winch body. This bushing keeps the pin straight when operating the winch handle. While cranking the machine onto the trailer the handle felt "loose". I found that this bushing had slid up the pin and inside the winch body. This is to say that there does not appear to be anything holding the bushing in place, like a pin or any locking mechanism. My solution was to push the bushing back into its place and put a little silicone adhesive on both sides. So far that seems to keep it in place where it belongs. Because of these minor issues I have bumped my review down to 4 stars. Still a decent winch. ================ 11/6/14 Update: I found the small clip that holds the crank handle pin. It had fallen off and somehow got under the winch. I put it back on and put some clear silicone over it to hold it in place. I think this will solve the problem for good.

Solid and reliable
This hand crank is sturdy and well made. It feels smooth when raising and lowering the trailer and the build quality gives me confidence it will last a long time. A great value for anyone needing a dependable trailer crank.

Works Well, Rugged And Was Easy To Install
I was happy with this winch and it was a drop in replacement for my Dutton-Lainson DL1100A. My old winch was rated for 1100 lbs., but this new one is rated for 1500 lbs. The winch and ratchet are well made and easy to use. The hole-pattern is for 3/8" bolts with spaces for up to 5 bolts. My trailer only needed two of the holes to mount it. The five bolt spaces (actually 4 holes and one slot) are in a T shaped pattern. The leading row of 3 holes (forward end near ratchet handle) forms the T that that is perpendicular to center of the trailer. There is one hole in the middle and two centered on either side. Each of the side holes is three quarters of an inch from the one in the middle. The 4th hole is along the centerline and one inch back from the leading center hole. The rear slot (under spool) ranges from about four inches to three inches center to center, back from the leading center hole. I only needed the leading center hole and rear slot to mount it to my trailer.

Boat trailer winch.
It seems to be of high quality and the switching parts works great. The one I had from Overton's a year old would release the winch strap and almost had me loose the boat off of the trailer. This one seems to be a great unit. Time will tell.

winch for my new small boat trailer.
First and foremost this is an inexpensive winch but you would never know it by the feel of it. I use 5 winches for various things and this one with the strap is my first non cable winch. Pay attention to keeping it out of the sun as the sun destroys plastic in all forms. I use a cable version of this to raise and lower the base platform of my 30 ton hydraulic press when resetting the pins to different levels.. I use a cable version of this to retrieve my boat on my big easy loader trailer. I use a very expensive version of this on the tongue to bring my utility trailer tongue to my tow vehicle. No more straining and maneuvering to hitch up in dirt and grass. I use a really old version of this to operate the boom on that trailer to lift things over 500 pounds into the trailer I seriously doubt you will find more winch for the money I do recommend spraying them down with 30 weight motor oil if they are left out in the rain as most of my winches are. Cable winches cables last much longer if they are coated with 30 wt. My 2 winches on my work jeep taught me the value of using an Amazon sure-shot spray can to apply oil to preserve the winches and cables. The energy to pull the cables is greatly reduced when alignment is not perfect. Since I discovered that the oil is essential I have gotten about 20 years on the 12 volt electric winch cables so far. The book tells you that and like many people I had to learn the hard way. Same with the springs in my garage door.

Im not using it to it potential, but its nice.
Ok, everyone buying this is most likely trying to haul a boat out of the water or drag something somewhere. I bought mine for a 240 lb plasma TV. Its hung by cables from the rafters in my gazebo. To keep it dry because its in front of a screened window, I was using ratcheting cables to hoist it up flat aimed at the ceiling. Worked fine but I had to lift the TV up by hand to get the thing ratcheted in with no slack. I bought this from Amazon, used, for $21. I must say I love it and it works great. Now keep in mind I'm only lifting 240 which is way less than this is rated, but it works great. It has three settings, one to ratchet in, out and a free spin setting. I set it to free spin to raise and lower it quickly and only set it to ratchet up to make sure the TV is locked in and doesn't fall at night. It came just like brand new and the strap and hook was included. It was lubed up and the material to make it is thick and strong. The size isn't too large nor too heavy. Now I will never use it for what it was intended for, but I'm sure this will handle a lot.

A great improvement
I've had this for a few years and it's been a great improvement from the stock winch which broke. The extra leverage and longer handle make pulling the boat onto the trailer a breeze. Well built and solid. Highly recommended.
