is the middle part of the board completely flat, or do the edges along the length of it curve upwards slightly?

I would have said flat, but I looked just to be sure, and the length of the board is very slightly concave. I put a straight, flat box on it to be sure, and there is about a quarter of an inch of air below the box at the center of the board.

Anyone use this for hockey training ? Looking to help build ankle strength an better mobility for my son

We don’t play hockey personally, but we are very confident it would help with hockey training. Ankle strength, mobility, and quickness is exactly what the WB helps with. Using the end balls as 2nd and 3rd balance points will improve agility and better replicates balancing on an ice skate. 3 dimensional balance points are more effective at improving these skills.

Does the whirly board require shoes for best experience? also, what is the difference between the cork-rubber and clear grip tape? thanks in advance!

I dont know the difference between the grip tape but I do have a cork-rubber and find that I can use it with any type of shoe or none at all. I have been on mine with sandals, flip flops, sneakers, socks and barefoot. It really depends on what I happen to have on my feet while working and decide to stand on it
