Discovering the way people in ancient cultures conducted their lives is fascinating for young people, and learning how these people counted and calculated is a part of understanding these cultures. This book offers a concise, but thorough, introduction to ancient number systems. Students won't just learn to count like the ancient Greeks; they'll learn about the number systems of the Mayans, Babylonians, Egyptians, and Romans, as well as learning Hindu-Arabic cultures and quinary and binary systems. Symbols and rules regarding the use of the symbols in each number system are introduced and demonstrated with examples. Activity pages provide problems for the students to apply their understanding of each system. Can You Count in Greek? is a great resource for math, as well as a supplement for social studies units on ancient civilizations. This valuable resource builds understanding of place value, number theory, and reasoning. It includes everything you need to easily incorporate these units in math or social studies classes. Whether you use all of the units or a select few, your students will gain a better understanding and appreciation of our number system. Grades 5-8 Review: Outstanding - It's simple, but strongly highlights the sophistication and efficiency of our current Arabic base 10 system. Seeing all of these predecessors, with different approaches, pros and cons, and incremental progress, is eye opening. And, for children, it makes more concrete some of the harder and more abstract points of basic arithmetic, like carrying digits; bc when you try these in the Egyptian system, it's really obvious what's going on! Review: Fun - Even great for younger teens

Great concepts, kind of long
This is a great little workbook for anyone interested in learning ancient number systems. My students especially liked the Greek and Egyptian number systems. However, for classroom use, this is kind of long. I will definitely not require some pages for my students next year.

Great Tool for Teaching number concepts
This book presents a series of worksheets that progressively from the most primitive number systems to more modern number systems such as binary. Each set of worksheets allows students to learn and interact with the different number systems and ultimately compare them, thus giving students a deeper understanding and appreciation of our own number system. They can also serve as a bridge between math and social studies.

Fun and educational for a range of ages
My children (ages 8 and nearly 13) love this book. It's filled with activities that are educational and enjoyable. They've been sharing one book, but it's consumable (you write in it) and I suspect I'll need to buy a second pretty soon.

Brilliantly Put Together
There is nothing special about this work/activity book st first glance. It is completely in black and white, and the pages are a simple layout. Let me say though, the exercises are just the right length and skill level so that most children 8+ could easily work through on their own. Even adults enjoyed this workbook as I have left it out on the table for visitors to flip through. A nice jumping off point for further study!
