Fantastic toaster. This is next level toasting, people. It works even better than all the hyped out reviews. And look at it! A work of art; naturally it is Italian designed. Worth every single penny. Can't speak to longevity because I finally have a toaster that does what it is supposed to do. Haven't tried the insert for panini or the warmer yet, but I sure plan to and soon.

These days, the truth is that it is impossible to get a quality toaster. All the components, if not the complete manufacture, is made in the "C" country (I cannot mention the country by name, or Amazon would not allow me to post this review). Even if the toaster says assembled in the USA or Europe, it simply means that something simple like a knob was put on and it was boxed there. Because of this, all toasters, regardless of price, will perform like a $15 toaster you purchase in the supermarket. The Smeg is not an exception to that rule. It toasts only one side of the bread. Out work around is to toast a slice of bread at a #2 setting, turn it over, and toast it again at a #2 setting. This performance comes nowhere near justifying the price of this piece of junk. If you want a $170 show piece (it is pretty), then this toaster is for you. If you want consistently toasted bread, then take a pass.

This toaster performs one function: toasting. Ok, 2 functions, because it also defrosts. One function while taking a lot of counter space and costing a chunk of change -- but it is worth every penny! I got tired of playing games with my fairly new Cuisinart toaster over, never knowing when it would actually toast bread or just sit there like a toy so I sacrificed it from the SMEG. I opted for the version that accommodates 4 slices (2 slices of bread per side) and it's perfect for slices of bakery-made misshapen loaves. The slots measure a generous 1.5" by 10". It offers 6 levels of toasty-ness (3 is a perfect middle ground) and the handy release button allows you to stop and check the "doneness". The red exterior is happy and the retro shape is just COOL! And there's a special setting for bagels. I am loving my SMEG and am eating toast to beat the band -- making up for lost time on that toaster oven. Wish I had bought the SMEG years ago!

OMG It's a "Bently" this toaster has won me over, It is like nothing I have even owned in the way of an appliance. I kid you not I have expensive cookware, knives and a resturant stove that I love but I have been plagued by can openers, toasters, toaster ovens and microwaves for decades. Yes its not cheap but it is worth every single penny. Run don't walk this is the last and only toaster you will ever need. You will know the second you depress the bread down the lever moves like glass. It toasted a frozen bagle to perfection. I bought the chrome version it's beautiful.

The slots are so big you can toast just about anything in it, love the size and color, very convenient
