PetSafe Surge Protector for Pet Fences, In-Ground Fence Systems

The Husqvarana Automower instruction manual suggests disconnecting the boundary wires and power supply during an electrical storm. Good advice, but the way the connectors are made it is not that easy and not something you can do every day during summer thunderstorms. Who dares go out in the lightning storm to grab wires in the ground? Since automowers work on a radio transmitting wire in the ground just like dog fences then this looked like a logical use for the device. I was concerned that perhaps because there is a directional aspect to the boundary wire circuits that this device may not work, BUT it does! Mowers have been operating perfectly. I did pair the wires in same left/right sequence from transmitter and to the actual boundary wires and marked each wire carefully with a code to identify it in case I have to disconnect the system for some reason. The mower charging station is connected to the terminals on the surge protector indicated as "trannsmitter" which is one of the functions of the charging station. Also, on the automowers there is a third wire for the guide wire to steer the mower back to the charging station. This one wire is not protected, but it is also attached to the boundary wire at some point so hopefully this will provide some protection there too. The guide wire is not used in all installations, but one could buy one more of these surge protectors to protect that wire alone although it would also have to be plugged into an AC circuit with a ground. Time will tell if this will protect the expensive automower in the lightning center of the universe in NW Florida! I have holes in my driveway from lightning striking and dead trees all over the property that acted as grounding rods. We shall see. If this $30 device saves $1500 that would be a good deal, right? :)

Works as it should. I had a couple visit and said it didn't work with their dog. If you have that issue just as I have had with 3 dogs now. Don't throw it away. The standard collar that comes with the underground fence will work on most dogs. I've had 2 German short haired pointers and one other mutt it wouldn't. They make a stubborn dog collar that worked for all my issues and for the couples dog while they visited after they got upset and threw away their system. They ordered one while visiting and the stubborn dog collar.

If you are having an underground pet fence installed you need this installed at the same time. Our pet fence company never offered this product when they installed our underground fence. If they had we would not have had to fork out almost $500 for a new main board. Several days of severe thunderstorms went through our area and a lightening strike went through the ground and pet fence wire all the way up to the main control board. After having the main board replaced I ordered and installed this pet fence surge suppressor so hopefully if lightening hits close by it will trigger the surge suppressor and not go through to fry the main board. The pet fence company said they had to replace a number of main board at the same time due to lightening strikes going through the ground. Pretty easy installation as it has a lever system that opens to place the wires and then closes when lever is released. Our house has whole house surge suppressors but that doesn't help the underground fences as the wires go directly into the main board before going into the electrical outlet. I hopefully don't have to wait to learn if it works well but in theory it should.

Maybe the radio technology just isn't there (5.0 rating if that's the case), or I'm totally screwing up the settings, but wish that extending the buzzer zone would increase the warning zone. Or if you could just increase the warning zone that would be awesome. The warning zone is maybe 1-2 feet when I installed on about 3/4 acre. So it doesn't give much warning for the dog if he's walking at a normal dog walk. Bo, the dog, would still run across the line at first chasing deer or yelling at neighbors 2 doors down and would only be afraid of the flags on the way back. I feel if the warning zone gave more time for the dog to hear and feel the warning, they'd do better, quicker. But...... now he pretty much knows his property lines and he doesn't wear his collar, but I'm giving the credit to me for swift beatings, jk just stern talkings to. I personally used the word "Careful" when he got close to the line and he still knows it today, about 5 months ago, first 1-2 months he was hooked up to the fence. Overall it worked great, good value for what you get and it's a great border training tool. But sometimes you just can't take the dog out of the dog. Pictured: Bo's ear won't stand straight anymore. Had a lightning strike and the perimeter brand one I had was 4x the price of this..it did its job but seemed very overpriced...happen to find this one and its much better made! It stays connected to the outlet, and while I like the added security of the screw, I have an adapter on my outlets so this does not work for my application unfortunately but the plug definitely stays secure in the outlet. The only negative really is the security screw did not come out as I did not want it installed as it was not useful as mentioned...I had to literally bend until it broke off to get it out as I did not want a screw accidently going into another outlet on my surge protector. if that makes sense...but it working as designed and the price is 4x cheaper than the one it replaced!

I installed my original in-ground fence in 2011. Other than one wire break due to animal digging, I've had no issues. This year, I had 2 back-to-back lightning strikes in my yard. The inground wire got fried. It blew the surge protector (as well as numerous electronics in my house), but the transmitter was unscathed. A new surge protector plus 2000' of wire, and it's back to business as normal. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

I purchased the PetSafe lightning protector on aug 4th 2012 after losing 2 base units to lightning and losing 85 dollars on each of those occasions I purchased the protector. The same day I received the protector I found a double fuse holder laying around in the basement and decided to try it also so that I would have double protection. I installed 2 fuses 1 amp in each holder and soldered the same wire that I used underground to the holder. I attached the 2 wires coming from my underground loop to one side and then connected wires from the other side of the fuse holder into the input of the protector. Well late last night almost 2 years later I finally got to try it out. Heard a loud lightning strike close to house, I got up the next morning went outside and heard the unit beeping, that is the sound it makes when it loses the loop. I checked the fuses and both were blown. I put two new fuses in and unit worked perfectly. It did not damage lightning protector or base unit at all. 2 fifty cent fuses is all that it cost me!!!

Purchased the Petsafe Underground Fence without the surge protector. Lost it when lighting hit about 1/2 mile away. The electric fence draws in the lighting through the ground. The box blew off the wall. Lesson learned. Purchased this protector and it worked for over 5 years. Storm hit a couple of days ago. We usually unplug the whole system when it is lighting a lot, but we weren't quick enough this time even though we did unplug it. The surge protector took the hit, but we didn't realize it until we plugged it in the next day and the box started beeping. We walked the fence line (about 4 acres) and didn't find a break. Then, we unplugged the surge protector and it rattled. It did its job, so I am ordering another one today!

Works great, no issues.. Thankfully haven't been affected by any outages yet. I'll post if it fails.
