Give it a watch.
Interesting, blast from the past series. Lots of gorgeous scenery plus a slow burn story. Enjoyable.

Had to buy it in Region 2 format and also bought an all zone DVD player.
I saw the BBC Television Mini-Series "Maelstrom" back in 1986 when it aired on PBS in New Orleans. It's an excellent thriller with a twist near the end. Tusse Silberg added the authenticity needed to carry out the Mystery of who actually was the Mystery Woman on the Island. However her own knowledge of who her mother was isn't revealed until the last five minutes of the Mini-Series by the excellent actress ability of Ann Todd. Excellent acting including the naivette of Ingred or her guarded knowledge of her suspicions which are also confirmed at the end regarding the Mental condition of her sister Anna Marie.I sincerely hope this Production will be converted to Region 1 DVD Format so those of us in the United States can obtain a copy for our collections. Programs of this sort need to be available in all formats.

BBC 1980's Drama/Thriller
I watched all of it in one sitting, so it must have been good! It's a bit dated now and not as scary as I remembered it to be when I was 9 or 10. The acting was a bit woody in places but the nontheless the storyline still kept me on the edge of my seat.In fact I was amazed at how much I had remembered, so the film clearly had an impact on me first time around. The dolls I still find quite spooky but the best part was; that I had forgotten the end.Would recommend.

A Norwegian Mystery.
In my opinion Michael J Bird could do little wrong. Maelstrom is no exception. Filmed in beautiful Norway, a more than competent cast act out an absorbing thriller with some genuinely sinister moments. The pace of the mystery is perhaps slow by today's standards, but for me that is one of Maelstrom's strengths as one can relate more easily with the main characters.Maelstom is an engaging thriller with a first class script, solid directing and ,typical of Michael J Bird, filmed in a splendid location.

I watch it through the keyhole!
I was looking for this film for years before I finally found it. It was a mini-series on TV in Hungary when I was about 10 years old. My parents wouldn't let me watch it, so I watched the first two episodes through the keyhole! Then, since I seen the beginning already anyway, I watched the rest of the series together with them. It is a bit dated now by today's standards but the storyline is brilliant and it's still fascinating and gripping. Very exciting.

surprises
I loved this series, even though it was made in 1986, it is still a gripping story with many twists and turns. After a slightly slow first episode the pace never lets up with lots of strange an scary events. This was a Dutch DVD but once you have turned off the Dutch subtitles you have the original English recording. I would recommend this to any one who enjoys an exciting mystery series.

Laid back creepiness
As mentioned in another review, if this were made today it would be a fast paced one off drama. And that would ruin it. Yes, the pace may be a little slow by today's standards. But this allows you to get more involved with the characters, and absorb the atmosphere of the story and setting. There are some genuinely creepy moments in this that stand out all the more for bobbing up like submerged hazards in a calm fjord. It is an intriguing story played out in a beautiful and refreshingly different setting. The almost constant sunshine of the Norwegian mid-summer makes a falsely reassuring background for a tale of mental illness and a family either ignorant of or choosing to be so of a dark secret that has brought a stranger into the very heart of their world.Tusse Silberg is a very likeable heroine, and David Beames is well matched to her, if a little distant. Which maybe an attempt to convey the cool nature of the Scandinavians. This coolness certainly shows in his apparent lack of enthusiasm to investigate what he believes to be a murder. Ann Todd makes the most of her appearances, giving a sterling performance as the tortured Aunt who just wants the past to stay in the past. There is an extra presence beyond the creepy china dolls though - the baleful prescence of the house on the island. This is no forbidding Manderlay though. Despite appearing to be an idyllic home in it's own little paradise, the house seems more sinister each time we see it. Even the bright and inviting ground floor begins to seem hostile. This is a well crafted gem that will linger in your mind.
