KNIPEX Pliers Wrench Pliers and a Wrench in a Single Tool with Non-Slip Plastic Coating 180 mm, 86 01 180

Knipex make great pliers but they are expensive, so I thought about this purchase for a while before I finally bought them. I already have 250mm and 300mm water pump pliers and I wanted something a bit smaller to get into tight spaces. I was very surprised just how compact these pliers are, and initially thought they wouldn't be up to the job. In use however they are brilliant, small enough to get in where other water pump pliers or grips can't, but with a decent capacity - the 180mm model I bought fits a 40mm nut. Their strong grip allowed me to undo nuts I didn't expect such a compact tool to manage. The size adjustment gives a range of about 6mm before you have to move to the next notch. It would be nice if this had a bit more movement but this would need a larger and more complex mechanism, so it's a good compromise. Their construction means the harder you push on the handle, the tighter they grip the nut, and there's no danger of their slipping. The parallel jaws are smooth and flat and don't mar brass or chrome fittings, so much nicer than pipe grips. Adjusting the pliers to the required size is a little fiddly, but no more so than regular pipe grips or adjustable spanners. They don't slip, keeping their size setting until you want to change. This is a real advantage over adjustable spanners that seem to need to be tightened constantly. You can also ease off on the handles and let them slip as you undo or tighten the nut, a bit like a ratchet spanner. This really speeds up working, especially if you can't see what your doing. Although these are called 'Pliers Wrench' they are most useful as a truly useable adjustable spanner, that happens to be a good pair of pliers too. These have replaced a set of spanners in my tool box. They aren't the cheapest around, but offer good value when you consider the cost and space savings you can make by not needing a full set of spanners. They are much better than water pump pliers and don't cut up the work piece. Definitely recommended.

Great tool

I bit the bullet from the get-go with these instead of buying a set of adjustable spanners, and so far I've not regretted it at all. The gripping force you can put down on these coupled with the handles, which whilst they're not "ergonomic" are very comfortable compared to the bare metal of normal spanners, means that it's so easy to tighten nuts and bolts both quickly and without trying to search for the right spanner or getting the adjustment right. Adjustment is easy, and the ability to loosen or tighten your grip to subtly change jaw width makes life so easy. They're definitely not cheap, but for how useful they are both for usage and space in the toolbox, it's definitely worth it and I would highly recommend a pair (or two, if you want to extend your range even further!)

These have taken me a while to get used to. They are great for some applications but I wont be throwing away my short 5 hole style ones. Great for SWA and similar gland nuts, electrical bushes and lock rings plus compression plumbing fittings as you can really get a good hold of the sides without scarring where a toothed set of grips would. They can be a bit finicky if you're changing between sizes, say 15-22 compression or 20-25 electrical but once set they're great.

Can not believe how had they grip for a little 180mm set you can just mash up a coin. Would definitely recommend, will definitely be getting a bigger set

Creo que se puede decir que Knipex ha inventado una herramienta nueva.Aunque en determinadas circunstancias,será necesario apoyarse en una llave inglesa,este modelo te permitirá prescindir de un juego de llaves fijas.Los que trabajamos con cinturón o con bolsa de herramientas,sabemos la importancia que tiene esto.He leído y no consigo entender que,algunas personas,a pesar de que alaban la calidad de la herramienta,se quejan de su elevado precio.Mi opinión es que vale cada uno de los céntimos que se pagan por ella.

Who doesn't like German engineering? This tool is the bees knees. It just oozes quality and is so easy to use. Unlike ordinary adjustable jaw pliers, these jaws stay parallel when in use meaning they really are a replacement for the usual adjustable wrench. And unlike the usual adjustable wrench, they don't move after they've been set. Normal adjustable wrenches require you to use the adjuster to wind the jaws down onto the nut, then wind them open again to take them off. They also always start to open up as you apply pressure. Not so with these bad boys. Depress the lock button, slide the jaws to the correct size, then squeeze the handles closed onto the nut. They absolutely cannot come apert in use, and will only release when you open the handle. The handles do not lock like vicegrips do, meaning they are very quick to take on and off. I can't believe it's taken me thirty years to add these to my tool kit. I now have them in three sizes; small, medium and large, and I really have replace a full set of spanners in my car kit. Everyone needs these.
