I used to think I didn't have a green thumb, but over the years, I've tried and tried and YouTube has helped me learn a ton about caring for house plants. I now have a jungle in all three of my apartment rooms! I still have a mishap on occasion and honestly, it's usually about watering. I got tired of sticking my finger into dirt and started using a chopstick and checking to see if the bottom was moist. Meh. Then I figured I'd give this moisture meter a try. I'm so glad I did. It works really fast (instantly, really) and is so far very accurate. It seems well made and is sturdy. I expected more of a cheaply made item and I'm pleasantly surprised that this seems well made, especially for the low price. No batteries needed, which is so great. You don't need instructions - you just stick the probe into the bottom of your soil and it tells you the moisture content. You need to know the needs of each plant and water or not water based on the reading. The outer box comes with a guide on watering requirements for a large variety of plants, which would very helpful for beginners, but I know what each of my plants needs are, so I tossed the box. The probe is really long, so I'm happy about that feature. The probe is stainless and seems very durable. For $10, this is a must have if you are a plant owner. I wish I hadn't waited so long to pick this up!

I don't typically review products until I've had/used them for awhile (several months) but doing this one early. So far, so good: I think the meter is accurate. It has seems to have help me save one of my fiddle leaf figs from root rot (I had this fiddle leaf on the same watering schedule as the fiddle leaf right next to it - which is doing amazing - yet the same schedule caused root rot to set in in this fiddle leaf). I will say that the watering guide printed on the box does not make a whole lot of sense, depending on how you interpret it. It is not consistent. Is it tell you when to water? Or what level of moisture to water to? (level to keep soil at). Either way, you will see that there are mistakes for certain plants. If you interpret the guide as tell you where the plant likes to be BEFORE you water it again, then here are some of the mistakes I see: the sansevieria plant (snake plant or "mother-in-law's tongue") - this plant is DEFINITELY a red zone plant. It likes dry conditions most of the time, somewhat like a cactus. If you kept this plant's soil in the suggested zone (green zone 6-7), as the guide suggests, you will quickly rot the roots and kill this plant. I also think the same is true for the ponytail plant. It likes to get to dry soil before the next watering occurs. But the opposite is true for the umbrella tree (listed as red zone plant). This "cousin" of the fiddle leaf fig does NOT like it's soil to ever become completely dry (unlike the fiddle leaf which should be firmly in the red zone before watering again). The umbrella tree likes to have it's soil just shy of being completely dry before receiving a "deep watering" (I'm guessing when the soil is at a moisture level of about 4-5 or a bit less is okay too; it can survive being in the red zone - it just doesn't love it and it lets you know by its drooping leaves). I'm not sure how many other flaws there might be in this guide, as I am not familiar with every type of plant listed but - if you interpret it as I am - it seems that a lot of the recommendations are correct. Personally, I would still look-up (google search) the water requirements of each individual plant. The vast majority of houseplants should be dry (in the red zone) before watering if you want to avoid root rot. Many plants can be saved from dryness (under-watering) but it is VERY difficult to save a plant from root rot (over-watering).

A very simple, basic product. No electronics, no moving parts. Just stick the metal rod into the plant soil (I usually check in two or three different spots) and it tells you on the dial how dry or moist the soil is. Some plants don't like the soil to ever get dry, other plants should definitely be allowed to dry out before being watered, so you need to know about your particular plant to fully benefit from this product. This moisture meter does prevent overwatering (which is a frequent cause of root rot and plant death). My only negative note is that the meter seems a bit fragile: I dropped one on the floor and although it looked fine, it stopped working (it would always read totally "dry"). I think the probe got disconnected from the meter inside the plastic top as a result of the impact sustained when it hit the floor. That's why I bought a second one.

So after reading a few bad reviews about durability and breakage vs the good I decided to buy it. I had water some plants prior to receiving the meter to see if I could reproduce some of the issues reported in reviews. So in testing my plants it seems to work fine. It worked in potting soil mixes and some of my more chunky soils. It did detect the various levels from dry to wet so based on my testing with various stages of watered, drying and how long before the watering it seems to work well knowing which plants were wet, moist and dry. I wipe it down between each plant to insure it would not give me erroneous reading. Time will tell if its actually good and consistent.

Does not work for orchid bark/perlite/charcoal so I am returning it. Customer service was helpful

This works as expected. I am used to using a moisture meter for the attention to the detail of watering my plants.

Update at bottom of review!!! Not changing my 1 star because I don't believe my soil was too loose as it was 1 part regular soil, 1 part succulent and a scoop of perlite which doesn't match the soil type description explained to me of why it might not be working. I did not test outside on soil so that was my mistake. They also said they do not compensate for reviews so I was incorrect in saying that. So here's some more info after my review on some advice from sellers if you might need it to make a decision or if reading this after purchase and product isn't working quite right. *I bought based off reviews on this but what I got is obviously defective and will be returning. I just repotted 1st plant 30 min ago and soaked it until water ran through and it's reading basically dry when it's obvious with the naked eye the soil it wet. 2md plant was watered yesterday and is at least slightly moist but it's reading dry dry and it is not dry dry at all. Better off using my finger to gauge water. This device sucks. I don't have a green thumb, but I recently bought 3 low light indoor plants. It was recomended I also buy a soil moisture meter, to avoid over watering. I found this one while searching & I'll say this, it's super easy to use & my plants are nice & healthy & not over watered finally.

Possiedo già uno strumento di misurazione professionale elettronico a doppia sonda che funziona benissimo e fornisce molti parametri tecnici. Tuttavia, proprio a causa della sua complessità, richiede circa 5 secondi di attesa per ogni singola lettura. Avendo molte piante da curare, questo tempo totale diventava proibitivo ogni volta che dovevo semplicemente controllare se fosse il momento di innaffiare. Per questo motivo ho deciso di acquistare l'igrometro XLUX, completamente analogico e senza bisogno di batterie. Devo dire che si è rivelato un acquisto azzeccato: confrontandolo con il mio strumento digitale, i valori di umidità sono estremamente precisi. La scala colorata (rosso, verde, blu) è intuitiva e rende la lettura immediata: quando la lancetta è sul rosso, sai che è ora di dare acqua. La caratteristica vincente è la velocità: la misurazione è praticamente istantanea, il che mi fa risparmiare tantissimo tempo. Alcuni consigli per un utilizzo corretto: La sonda va inserita nel terreno per circa un dito. È fondamentale pulire bene la sonda con un panno prima di ogni singola misurazione per mantenere l'affidabilità nel tempo. In conclusione, se cercate uno strumento pratico, economico e molto affidabile per una misurazione rapida dell'umidità (per capire subito se innaffiare o meno), questo prodotto è la soluzione ideale. Ich habe von Zimmerpflanzen keine Ahnung und ich habe auch keinen grünen Daumen, aber ich habe mir eine Bougainvillea angeschafft, die ich mir schon länger gewünscht habe, weil ich ihre Blütenpracht so faszinierend schön finde. Seit einigen Wochen darf ich sie nun bereits bewundern, aber sie hat wohl nach dem Stress des Lieferungsprozesses einen großen Teil Blüten und Blätter abgeworfen. Inzwischen treibt sie kräftig, jedoch leider ohne neue Blüten anzusetzen. Ok, ich habe mich informiert und demnach ist unsere Bougainvillea zu feucht. Die Pflanze steht in einem Gemisch aus Erde und Substrat, die Oberfläche schaut trocken aus, auch wenn ich den Finger hineinsteckte fühlte es sich sehr trocken an. Dann habe ich entdeckt, dass es speziell für Pflanzen Feuchtigkeitsmesser gibt und diesen hier aufgrund der guten Rezensionen bestellt. Das war genau richtig, denn sonst hätte ich meine blühende Schönheit wohl bald kaputtgepflegt. Das Messgerät kommt ohne Batterien oder ähnliches aus, es wird einfach in den Boden bzw Pflanztopf eingesteckt, binnen Sekunden wird die jeweilige Feuchtigkeit angezeigt. Anders als ich vermutet hatte, bleibt das Messgerät aber nicht in der Pflanze, es muss immer wieder schnell entnommen werden, dann abgewischt und außerhalb der Pflanze verbleiben, denn sonst würde die Messeinheit wohl korrodieren. Ich war hochgradig irritiert, wir hatten im Bereich der Bougainvillea zT sehr hohe Temperaturen und ich habe sie vor mehr als 8 Tagen zuletzt gewässert und dennoch zeigte mir die Anzeige, dass zuviel Feuchtigkeit im Boden ist. Das war auch bei unseren anderen beiden Pflanzen der Fall. Ich war genauso überzeugt, dass unsere Glücksfeder trocken sein müsste von meinem Gefühl ausgehend, aber nein, sie war ebenfalls leicht zu feucht. Ohne die Anzeige durch dieses Messgerät hätte ich dies nie bemerkt und unseren Pflanzen somit nicht gut getan. Ich möchte dieses Messgerät nicht mehr missen wollen. Für Laien, die sich mit Zimmerpflanzen kaum auskennen, ist diese Hilfe besonders empfehlenswert, denn es schenkt Klarheit darüber, ob die Pflanzen wirklich Wasser benötigen.Das Gerät ist sehr leicht, wirkt gut verarbeitet und ist auch gut ablesbar. Also absolute Kaufempfehlung für diesen nützlichen Helfer.
