National Geographic Mega Fossil Dig Kit with 15 Genuine Fossils for Kids

The National Geographic Mega Fossil Dig Kit was a huge hit with my niece! She had a blast unearthing all the hidden fossils, and the kit kept her engaged for hours. The included tools are easy to use, and the instructions were simple to follow, making it fun and educational at the same time. She loved discovering all the different fossils and learning about them. It’s a perfect gift for young explorers or anyone curious about prehistoric life. Highly recommend—it's an awesome way to spark interest in science and history!

We had a lot of fun with this kit. At times, my daughter wanted to chisel slowly (and the chisel with this kit is excellent, as are all the tools). For times when she was more eager to uncover or chip away larger chunks, we wet the gypsum and it became like a creamy clay at its wettest and simply easier to chisel/carve and less likely to chip or flake with brushing water on its surface. The only suggestion I have is that simple goggles could be a smart idea, especially for those who like to get in close. The thickness of the tool handles would be nice for small hands and makes the tools easier to handle but slips are possible with any similar tools. The booklet helped us identify each fossil and is a keeper to help us remember what each fossil is. The photos were clear and the text informative. The fossils themselves were excellent quality given the price of the kit. The size of each piece is smaller than individually purchased fossils we have and each makes a nice addition to her collection (the ammonite is particularly nice). This would be an excellent way to start a fossil collection, in terms of fun and economy.

My dinosaur-loving nephew and I had an AMAZING time raising my sister's blood pressure after I let him go digging for fossils on her kitchen floor! Seriously though, he loved it. I loved it. This is a great tactile and educational gift for kids into geology and prehistoric creatures... or even kids who just yearn to dig. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind: The dirt brick the fossils come packed is in kind of firm, so you'll want to soften it up with a bit of water. Oh, and lay out some kind of mess-proof barrier like a trash bag or a tarp if you're doing this inside (or just do it outside), and have wipes or towels handy because it will get messy. Also, temper your expectations. The fossils are genuine, don't expect perfectly intact specimens. One of our fossils came in pieces, which is fine. The average fossil is about the size of a walnut, perfect for a young scholar's collection but not so much for the smaller kiddos that like to put anything and everything in their mouths. Not only are the fossils real, but they're pretty. Yes, even the little poop. Seriously, I would have died to have this toy as a child. If they make one with all geodes, I WILL be buying one just for myself. I don't care if I'm in my thirties.

Gonna be honest, bought this for my self. :D caught it on a deal for $17ish and well, I have no impulse control, and love fossils. So here the deal. This would make a great gift, and I'm sure kids would love it. I did and am thinking about getting another one. Pro: came with 15 actual fossils. Con: the bone looks like a regular rock, and I didnt get the orthoceras. Some of the fossils like the Mosa tooth are broken and glued togethor, and the trilobite was super fragile to the point just gently rinsing it in a bowl of water was causing it to flake apart. Pro: instead of the orthoceras, i got a flat patterned black fossil. Lady at the museum downtown told me it looked like fossilized skin! The trilobite was like a 2nd activity! A 3d jigsaw puzzle! Con: the brachipod was extremely pitted, and when washed smelled horrible, like lake sludge. Pro: the fossil poop didnt smell bad XD Pro: Came in a nice breakable brick yiu have to "excavate" the fossils from. Was fun at first. Con: Super messy, the dust gets every where, and I dont many kids with attention soams long enough to gently carve out each fossil. Pro: came with tools Con: very small tools amd I have giant hands. Probably not an issue if i had been of the right age group lol. Overall. It's fun, would be a cool gift. Has real fossil, but they are low grade. You may not get everything listed, and have to be super diligent to make sure you get them all as some are pretty small. And its messy. Catch it on sale I'll probably buy a couple for my kid cousins... and maybe another for my self. :)

Fun for the kids to find things, great gift.

I bought this for my 7 year old son while school is closed during this season. He absolutely loved it! He spent a good hour or more digging on it. I will add some pictures as well. At first it was confusing. We weren't sure what side to dig on so we started on the back side (which had no design). We thought the front was just for design purposes only, to later realize that is the side you dig on. It takes a while and lot of patience for the kiddo doing it. I did have to help a few times. His hand would get tired. The tools are made for small hands but can start to hurt after a while. My son a few times tried to dig it like he had a chisel in his hand. I had to make him slow down. You can break the stuff if your not careful. This project would be great if you had several kids that could take turns on it. They recommend to use water to help soften the dirt if its to hard, we tried at the very end. I didn't care for the results of the water. It turned the dirt into clay like and got very slippery and thick. My son at this point had a very hard time holding the tool because it slipped around so much out of his hand. Water does make it easier as far as the dirt goes but harder to see the stuff because it becomes very messy. After we got them all out and washed, he then labeled them. We enjoyed it!

Arrived in very good condition. The child it was bought for was very pleased with it. A good teaching/learning and STEM activity.

As a university adjunct professor of computer science and engineering, I was asked to teach the science classes for my 2nd grade and kindergarten grandchildren this year in "pandemic home school". I purchased this Mega Fossil Dig Kit specifically to complement the lesson on plant and animal fossils. After the lesson proper, both students enthusiastically extracted all 15 fossils hidden in the clay slab for over an hour! We broke the slab into several pieces so they could work separately, and used a little water to soften the material enough that each fossil could be carefully outlined, dug out, cleaned up with water and brushes, and identified with help from their aunt using the booklet provided with the kit. They were proud to show each one they had found to their parents, and to explain about the life that had made it. I felt that the size and quality of the fossils were very appropriate for elementary students. The accompanying booklet was informative, colorful, and sufficient for identifying every fossil, and the students made a lovely mess and many fond memories while learning more "hands on" about life from long ago. Definitely recommended!

Buon prodotto. Ho acquistato questo gioco come regalo per mio figlio di 8 anni. È stato molto apprezzato. Si è divertito molto a scavare e poi ad incollare tutto in una cornice (presa a parte). Ha portato poi il "quadro" con i fossili a scuola alla lezione di storia. Piccoli lati negativi: - fa molta polvere in casa durante i "scavi", quindi consigliato di fare all'aperto su una tovaglia di plastica, -certi fossili sono molto piccoli e quindi si fa fatica a trovarli (1 non abbiamo trovato!) - istruzioni in inglese

Purchased for our eight year old, she absolutely loved digging into this fabulous kit. It comes as a solid block with tools to chip away and reveal the fossils within. It is pretty messy but a much loved educational gift. I bought this while it was on offer, and was more than happy to pay £20. The fossils themselves are beautiful and lovely keepsakes.

Está guay, pero duro como una piedra para sacarlo todo, acabé yo con la mano dolorida. Merece la pena, los fósiles son muy interesantes, el que mas le gustó al peque fué el coprolito 😀 y los colmillos, pero con 6 años no puedes pedir mucho más. A mi me ha parecido entretenido y educativo.

Très bon kit de fouilles ! Plein de petits fossiles avec un livret explicatif ! Attention par contre , c’est une activité salissante 😂
