before retiring i worked more than 35 years in federal, state, and university positions related to land use. the urban planning, architecture, and landscape architecture professions seek to transform some spaces into inhabited places. yet seldom do these professions seek to know as much as possible about needs of the people who inhabit places. dr. low, a cultural anthropologist, has spent the past four decades developing ethnographic survey methods by which to ascertain needs of people as spaces become places. she has written the best book on land use planning and design i've ever read.

I liked the book very much. The topic intrigued me. Plus, I agree with the author’s views about the importance of space as a function of the human condition. The way that the book shows details with photographs offers the reader experiential space within the text. I loved the pictures!

Great work from a first rate ethnographer.
