5 stars through much scrutiny
This is a nice tool: the fact that it's marketed as a "combat" kukri leads me to believe (as the mindless consumer that I am) that I should be more privileged with "combat" functionality to go along with the practical use that this blade has as a tool; what I mean is, I didn't like the sheath, but it has served well after all this time and it's still in one piece. Kydex seems (and seemed) to be a better application for a sheath for this blade, yet I'm not all too experienced with kydex anyway, So my original review emphasized my desire for a kydex sheath, yet some insight from other reviewers has shone some light on the possibility that my review could have been ignorantly biased. I have continued to use this tool, as I call it, for various campsite functions. It has served me well. I used to rely on a regular fixed blade knife with a blade length between 4-7 inches give or take, but with this lightweight but useful blade, I can chop through many small branches without having to baton through them. This comes in handy when trying to quickly start a fire. I have had no problem clearing minor amounts of brush as well. The original Ka-Bar Kukri, however, works better for that obviously since it is a longer blade. The combat Kukri is a nice blade to carry in the woods, it can shave, cut, chop, and even be thrown(although I don't recommend it unless you know what you're doing). That's all for now, but I'll keep updating my reviews as long as I am using this blade. Happy hiking! the combat kukri works wonderfully for use as an icepick to break the ice on my dogs waterbuckets. In fact, it's the best tool I've used so far. The slight curve of the blade makes chopping the ice away on the inner edges of the buckets very easy. I have taken very good care of my blade, and kept it slightly oiled after getting wet. No rust so far!(*update:i stopped oiling and any and all blade maintainence for a couple years now and there is rust, but very minimal...nothing that wont wirebrush off, but truly i feelthe blade has more chutzpa now...) to give some props back to the sheath, i have kept this kukri outside(inside of an old milk can, covered from rain but still exposed to the damp and cold) all winter and there's no problem(multiple winters now) i've kept a bit of cotton and a magnesium firestarter flint block in the sheath pocket and to be honest, this would be the first thing i grab if i needed to just take off hiking the Appalachian trail....it's become a survival kukri and rambo would probably approve

Excellent All-around knife.
Well there is no questioning the fact that Ka-Bar makes top notch products, and this little gem is no exception. I went with this particular model instead of its bigger brother because I felt it would shave off several ounces and fit better on my hiking gear. (It is now attached to the side of my pack where the weight is easily distributed and is easily accessible). The construction is top notch. The 1095 cro-van steel holds a good edge while providing a good resistance to chipping and dings. Just don't go attack the tin man with it and you should be fine ;) This model has the exact same full tang design as the classic USMC Ka-Bar so there are no surprises there. The thickness of the blade is just right. Not too thick so it turns into a brick and not too thin so it can be easily bent or broken. As far as materials and construction go, have no fears this thing delivers it to you on a silver platter. The sheath that is provided allows you to store the blade for easy access as a lefty or a righty. There is also a tiny pouch built into the sheath to store a wet stone. The design of the kukri, in my honest opinion, is a far better choice than the classic bowie style. Its basically the marriage of a large knife and a hatchet. This versatility allows you a VERY wide variety of tasks that you may require in a survival situation...and yes as far as self defense goes, you would NOT want to be on the receiving end of this thing. The kukri design has been around for thousands of years and thanks to Ka-Bar we now have a modern version comprised of modern materials stamped with that good ol' U.S.A mark that we are all looking for these days. If you are in the market for a good all around knife, this model will boost the usefulness of any survival pack.

Excellent Blade for Camping, Hiking, and Hunting!
Excellent quality blade. A little bigger than I imagined (totally not complaining :) ). Definitely one of my better blade purchases. Recommended for all of those who need to clear out brush for camping, hiking or hunting as it is very handy.

Great knife if used correctly
This is an excellent knife. I used this knife as a replacement for my hatchet. It's smaller than I anticipated but that actually works in my favor because it's easier to store and still packs a punch when chopping wood. I have used this knife quit a bit and it's still pretty sharp. As of know, it's stored with my bag and take it any time I go camping. I recommend it for people who know how to use a knife. I say that because I've seen people do some dumb things with their knives, like standing on them and abusing them until they snap. This is one of those knives that if you take care of it, it'll take care of you.

Combat Kukri
Ka-Bar does it again with another amazing knife!! Razor sharp outta the box and heavy duty with an ambidextrous tactical nylon sheath with a M.O.L.L.E. attachment strap on the back and two lashing holes perfect for paracord on the bottom. The sheath also has a double pocket on the outside that has a compartment for some small gear like a firestarter or a knife sharpener and then has a built in plastic housing for a second small knife blade(which knife I'm not sure). I also have the "big brother" to this blade..Ka-Bars Kukri Machete which is one bad ass blade but despite the smaller size I favor this new Combat Kukri because it's Made In The U.S.A.

Nice quality. A bit light.
A kukri is really a multi-purpose tool. The tip should be very sharp, about 25ยบ. You slice up your tomatoes with this part of the knife. The center should be more like a cleaver, sharpened according to whether you are going to cut vegetables or bone with it. I sharpen mine like a Chinese vegetable chopper. The portion of the blade between the curve and the handle should be extremely sharp. It is used for fine work such as whittling or slicing thinly. About 20ยบ. This knife comes with the entire blade sharpened at 20ยบ, so you will have a bit of work if you want to sharpen it like a kukri. On the other hand, the blade is really too short to be used practically like a traditional kukri or survival knife, so sharpening the entire knife at 20ยบ may be a reasonable thing to do. The back of the blade has the wide wedge that on traditional kukris is used like a hammer. This blade is really too light for that, but I suppose you could drive tacks with it. I have not tried digging holes with it and I am not about to. I suppose it would work if you really don't mind spending all evening restoring your blade's edges. As a camp kitchen knife, it performs quite well. It chops spaghetti squash and slices tomatoes with relative ease. It is hardy and should last you many years. And it is even short enough to fit in your camp cook box. I think its light weight makes it more suitable as a Chinese vegetable cleaver than something with which you are going to chop through bones. The blade is too wide for lifting a hot Dutch oven lid, but most Dutch oven cooks have a lid lifter for that anyway. The different blade weight threw my aim off considerably, but you get used to it. As a survival knife, the Combat Kukri may not, at first, seem as useful as a full size kukri. As an older (and somewhat feeble) person, however, I appreciate the light weight when carrying it around. While it might not clear a trail as quickly as a machete, its shorter length does make it easier to use in dense foliage such as blackberries, salal, and temperate rain forest. I know very little about knife fighting. My motto is, if you feed 'em, you don't have to fight 'em. If Ka-Bar says it is a good personal defense weapon I have to assume that this would only be true in the hands of someone who is competent at it. That said, you could probably make a pretty decent spear with it by tying the handle to a pole. Just don't ask me how realistic it is to call this a "combat" kukri, 'cuz I have no idea. Now let me be clear on this: I do not like painted blades. However, the paint does seem extremely durable and after using it for a couple weeks I see no damage to it. The sheath is adequate -- it has a plastic lined sleeve which has been blamed for dulling blades in other Ka-Bar knives. I have not noticed this to be a problem. It has a second double pocket suitable for storing a whet stone and a plastic lined sheath for a small blade such as a neck knife. Cute, but not that useful. If I want a neck knife I will wear it on my, um, neck? Total length of knife allowed in this second sheath is about six inches. The sheath may be worn either right or left handed. The lower end has riveted holes for tying a leather thong or shoelace around your leg. The sheath also has Velcro straps on the back that are snapped closed when worn on a belt, but which can be used for attaching the sheath to a pack or saddle. I give it 4 stars. Almost perfect, but could stand a slightly heavier blade for chopping and pounding.

Great backpacking machete
I already own the larger Ka-Bar kukri, but wanted this one for lighter weight and smaller size for backpacking. It's perfect. Clears brush and branches like a dream, and cuts down kindling with easier handling than the larger version. Once you learn the balance of this blade and where to strike your target (in the curve), you'll be clearing wood like butter. I cut down a dead 8" diameter pine with this in less than 20 swings. With a reprofiled edge, I can only imagine how much more efficient it would be.

Good knife
It is sharp and holds a good edge. Chops wood extremely well for its size. The only problem I had was when chopping my hand would slide down the handle every 5-10 chops until stopping at the pommel and then I had to re adjust my grip.

Wonderful
I have not had time to try it yet. But, seems to me exactly what I wanted. A mini machete versatile to do everything, light, high quality, well balanced, with a comfortable handle that clings very well and at a reasonable price of $ 107 can + taxes. By taking it in hand we quickly understand why this kind of knife is also a very formidable weapon for the military of some countries ... The case is perfect for me and the delivery was very fast. Next summer I plan to put it seriously on a forest hike. And if I change my mind about his assessment, I'll come back correct.

This is the perfect size for a Kukri
This is the perfect size for a Kukri. Can't go wrong with Ka-Bar. researched all the manufacturers of kukris and felt KaBar made the best and perfect size for hiking or hunting. Not too big but big enough. It was sharp out of the box. The sheath is good, no complaints. This will be at my side when going outdoors.

Definitely not a chopper
Beautiful made super sharp. But not much of a chopper. Due to its light weight. But I'm sure will get you out of a jam if use for slashing or staving. And I think can also be used as a non lethal defense weapon. By leaving it in the sheath. And holding the handle passing your hand through the belt loop.

Love all the ka-bars out of Orleans NY
Love all the ka-bars out of Orleans NY...not Taiwan. This Was the last addition to my ka-bar collection I put it off because of uncertainty regarding kukri look... It's a crazy cool knife, very sharp. One of my favourite's
