Ergonomic Comfort
Steelcase Amia Review (Real-World Use) Iโm about 5โ9โ, 180 lbsโpretty average buildโand I use a standard 30โ desk that isnโt adjustable. To get the chair at a comfortable height for desk use, I have to raise it all the way up, which leaves my feet hanging a few inches off the ground. So I do need a footrest. Thatโs probably the first thing worth noting: this chair seems better suited for medium to slightly larger users. If youโre on the smaller side, you might find it sits a bit high relative to a standard desk. Comfort & Ergonomics This is where the Amia really shines. The backrest design is excellentโvery form-fitting with a natural curve that supports your lower back and encourages good posture. Itโs not overly plush, which is actually a good thing. It keeps you aligned instead of letting you sink into bad posture. There is an adjustment period. If youโre used to slouching in softer chairs, expect a bit of soreness for the first week or two. After that, it feels completely natural. The lumbar support is adjustable, but honestly, I think most people will just leave it in the lowest position. Itโs nice to have, but probably not a major selling point for the average user. Armrests (One of the Best Features) The armrests are excellent. They adjust up/down, side-to-side, and in/out with very fine controlโyou can dial them in to a really precise position. If I had to nitpick, they donโt come quite as close to your body as they could, but itโs a minor issue. Overall, this is one of the standout features of the chair. Build Quality This chair feels solid. Itโs on the heavier side, which in this case is a good thingโit feels durable and well-built. The brackets and bolts connecting the backrest are thick and sturdy The height adjustment cylinder is strong and stableโno bounce once set Casters are solid, with thick metal pins (no cheap components here) Everything about it gives the impression that itโs built to last. Adjustability & Recline The tilt and recline system is really well done. You can fine-tune how much resistance you want, from very stiff to very relaxed. One of my favorite features: you can adjust it so that when you lean back, it stays exactly where you put itโno constant pushback or drifting. That makes a big difference during long sessions. The height range is also solid, with plenty of travel. Seat & Padding The seat cushion is great for someone my size. Itโs supportive without feeling overly firm or too soft. That said, this is not a big-and-tall chair. If youโre significantly heavier (300+ lbs), the padding might not feel sufficient over long periods. The back padding is thinner than some chairs, but it worksโit supports without interfering with posture. Wheels & Materials The stock casters work perfectly fine on thin carpet. I donโt see any need to upgrade them. The armrest material is a slightly rubberized plasticโit doesnโt get sticky or gross over time and seems durable. The upholstery also feels high quality. No concerns there so far. Value Retail price is around $1,100, and personally, I wouldnโt pay that. I picked mine up refurbished for about $470, and at that price, itโs an excellent value. If youโre deciding between a $300 chair and something like this in the $400โ$500 range, Iโd strongly recommend spending the extra money. The difference is significant. Long Sessions & Back Support I regularly sit in this chair for 8โ10 hours a day, and I have zero back pain. That alone makes it worth it for me. After years of using lower-quality chairs, the difference is night and day. Final Thoughts This feels less like a purchase and more like an investment in your body. Itโs not perfect for everyoneโsmaller users and larger โbig and tallโ users might want something more tailoredโbut for average builds, itโs a fantastic chair. If youโre on the fence and can find one at a good price, Iโd say go for it. Just keep in mind: if youโre using a fixed-height desk, you may need a footrest to really dial in your setup.

Squeaky and poor customer service
The chair is actually pretty nice and comfortable. Also, I like how adjustable it is. However, every time I sit back and actuate the chair, it makes a horrible sound like unlubricated metal rubbing on itself; it is really loud and obnoxious. I returned this chair to Amazon because I thought this was a defect and the next chair I got had the same exact issue. It is funny because I bought this chair because my old chair, which is 15 years old, started to makes these sounds and now this $700 chair is worse! I talked with Steelcase and they told me that this is indeed a defect and that I could get a new one, but that was a month ago and now they haven't been returning my follow-up emails. I would not recommend buying this chair.

Very comfortable all day office work chair
Purchased open box return which arrived very fast, most likely direct from previous return customer. Chair arrived with back rest damage, something heavy landed on top of box and separated pad from back rest. Back rest had bend and dent but I was able to make a full repair, not sure if others could though. Chair works 100% like new except for a dent and couple bent areas in back rest that you do not feel when sitting on. I am 6โ and 240lbs and chair is great, would of liked an option to attach a head rest but Iโll be ok. Itโs a great unassuming office chair that doesnโt get the looks of others so I am glad I didnโt pay the full price and to be honest, now that I have been using it for a couple of weeks, my mind has changed and I wouldnโt have minded paying full price now either. Itโs a great work chair. Seat is very comfortable, back is comfortable, overall well built chair. I overly scrutinize and critique everything and the only complaint I have is that thereโs a slight bend to back rest from previous damage. Those taller than 6โ should probably look at Steelcase Gesture or Leap V2 as those have taller backrest and or head rest options but those chairs are a lot more money. I think this Amia chair has a more comfortable seat pad anyways and I can use this chair for 8 hours a day and have no pain or stiffness in my back or legs. I cannot say that about other chairs. Great job Steelcase!

Wrong color, great chair
The chair has been in my house for all of 40 minutes so far, so I'll have to circle back. So far, I am impressed. The chair arrived fully-assembled. All I needed to do was remove the standard packaging materials. The video on the product page was useful for explaining each adjustment. I chose this specifically for the range of adjustments it offers, and it did not disappoint. Within just a couple of minutes I had it dialed in to where it feels comfortable and supportive, like it was made for me. My only "complaint" is that I received a black chair instead of blue. The box is labeled "blue" so it looks like a packing issue with the manufacturer, not a warehouse or shipping error. I checked the rest of the tags and otherwise I'm sure it's the correct item in a different color. That's the only reason for lowering the rating by one star. Honestly, I would have purchased black to begin with, but at that time blue was both less expensive and available sooner. I couldn't be happier with the mistake.

Okay
I like the chair itโs comfortable the seat is nice and i like how you can adjust the back and height The only reason i am giving it 3 star its because if my feet is not touching the ground it spins arounds i have to be grounded at all the time which makes it annoying for the price i paid this should not be the case

Sometimes the higher priced items actually are really worth it.
I absolutely love this chair. I'll get to the cons in a moment but regardless it is still worth it. You see, I work from home in front of a computer and would literally burn through chairs practically every year. I have done the gamer chairs, the office chairs, the Amazon Basics budgets, and then some. It seemed that each year or so I would drop another 2-300 on a new chair and be sort of happy with my purchase (at first.) Mind you, I am writing this review two and half years after my purchase. This is already beyond the normal lifetime of many of the other chairs I have bought. The seat plates would deflate, the gaskets would blow, the castors would break, and so on. Each and every time it would be shortly outside of my ability to get a refund or repair. None of those issues exist with this chair. The only problems I have are cosmetic like having a coffee spill stain on the seat. Even that, I plan on fixing (which was my own fault and not an issue with the chair obviously,) with some upholstery cleaner. Regardless, even if anything does become an issue, Steelcase has an amazing 12 warrantee. Okay, now for the cons. One minor and one annoying but also minor. The first con is that you have to sort of learn how to sit differently than you would with a lot of other chairs. It took some getting used to in understanding the "live back" system how the reclining function of the chair works. I love it now, but it did take a bit of getting used to. The second is me just being a bit annoyed about paying so much for something and feeling that there are areas where the craftmanship is just not up to spec. Granted, they are mostly in areas you wouldn't be interacting with but there are sharp edges and loose movements in areas that I feel should be tight and clean. If I am going to pay around a grand for a chair, I want that to be polished. Still though, I am giving this a five star because in the end, it will be a cheaper chair for me than the dozen or so cheap and mid-range chairs I have bought over the years. ...and is more comfortable.
