Just got this game for Christmas, what is the minimum number of players needed to play?

I would say for a fairly basic game of Mafia, you would want at least 10 people (3 mafia, 7 townspeople). But ideally more than that. When you get closer to 20 and up, it really starts to get interesting!

What is the maximum number of players?

You can technically have 36 players with the cards provided although the game would go on for a long long time. Ideally you want between 7 and 15 players for a quick game but it's also fun with around 20 players.

Do the cards come with a summary of what the role does? I can see some pictures that have the descriptions and some without them.

Yes, there is an instruction sheet with details on all the roles and some cards have more descriptions for the in depth games.

Does it say what each role does?

Yes, the game comes with an instruction sheet that outlines what each role does along with the instructions on how to play. This October (2016) we'll have an updated version of Mafia available on Amazon with role summaries on each card as well as a more comprehensive instruction manual.
