Yes, it is universal. It will have threads on it, but will slide over the pipe.

What is the purpose of specific purpose of this and how do you know if it's working properly?

he air relief valve, a.k.a the bleeder valve, bleeds trapped air from the pool filter. In practice, it’s meant to be opened after you start the pool pump, to release air trapped at the top of the filter tank. Close the valve knob once water starts to spray out of the valve.

Is there a spring that goes with this filter? I seem to have misplaced mine. Will no spring affect how it works?

This screen cap replacement part does not come with that compression spring which is actually attached to the filter manifold. I believe you can buy that as a separate replacement part for Pentair part #178616. I believe the spring is necessary to keep the screen cap in place on the air bleed tube and to keep the fine mesh top from getting crushed by the Pentair filter housing.

How to remove the old one from the tube? Mine seems glued.

It shouldn't be glued to the tube, just pull it off!

Works for Pentair Quad 60

Yes, it fits. I saved money buy ordering this part instead of the entire "assembly" composed of this part and some PVC pipe. I noticed my screen cap was cracked and I started looking for the replacement. Last time I overpaid and ordered the screen cap with the PVC. This time I did a little research and took a chance on this part and I am glad to say it fits perfectly.

Does not fit Pentair Clean & Clear 320

This screen does not fit a Clean & Clear 320, even though the part number in the description (190106Z) matches it. The opening is too small and will not fit onto the pvc pipe. I ended up buying directly from Pentair and it fit properly.

It fits and holds up.

Direct fit for C&C 420. Although the inner diameter appears threaded, it slipped right on. After two filter cleanings - it has held its shape and has not collapsed or corroded.
