Sperry Instruments VD6504 Non-Contact Voltage Detector, 50-1000 V AC, Black, 5 Sensors

Very good product. Sensitive enough, not over sensitive. It helps me to identify wire behind dry walls. Easy to use, warnings are not annoying. Nice add to my tool box.

great little pen but is a bit too powerful .works great for picking up current but it will not isolate single wire from a cord.will keep you from getting zapped though.

This review is for the Sperry VD6504 Non-Contact Voltage Detector. Build quality seems fine, the light is bright and the audible tone is loud. My main issue is that it is too sensitive. For example, it is almost impossible to tell which is the hot wire and which is the neutral wire on a supply cord or fixture, or which outlet (or switch) is active in a ganged box. In hindsight I should have spent a few dollars more and purchased the VD6505 Adjustable Model.

Because it’s too sensitive and beeps 4” away from the line, it’s impossible to know which cable is which while exchanging outlets.

works good, i am happy whit it, but, you need to know how to use it.

1. At the time of order and review, this product is labelled as an "Adjustable Volt Sensor." It is, in fact, non-adjustable (as a quick look at the Sperry page just confirmed for me). I wish I'd looked at the product more closely before ordering. 2. As other reviewers have pointed out, it is far too sensitive to be used for ordinary electrical diagnostic work. Standing at my desk to write this review, if I press the button and bring the device within about 20 cm of anything electrical, it begins beeping. If it were adjustable, that clearly would be something to be worked around. I blame the product title here on Amazon, not the manufacturer. I suppose if what you're hoping for is the "idiot test" of "are there ANY live circuits anywhere nearby," then this fits the bill. 3. You have to press and hold the button for the device to work... this makes it fairly useless for another common diagnostic test (jam the blade in your outlet, now run to break box and start flipping breakers back on until the thing starts beeping). 4. Excellent - senses current even inches away from source. Very pleased - anyone who works with electrical should have one.

Finds the power. This works perfectly for finding if a line is live or if the power is off before working on the line. Does a great job.

Do not buy this tool. Totally useless. Like others say, sometimes it it too sensitive, but I bought it anyway because I was working with wires that were far apart. But on some of the wires, it does not register when I KNOW the wire is live. I can move if back and fourth on the wire and sometimes it will detect and others it will not. Some from 6" away. It is totally useless, and even though it is indicated by the description, it is not adjustable in any way.
