Great product!
I recently purchased 2 Shift Shades for my husband who works a rotating shift schedule. Previous to the purchase of this product we had our windows covered with a "honeycomb" blinds and double sided curtains. These blocked a considerable amount of light but did not render the room completely dark and we had to use tape and blankets to cover the edges of the windows where light still was able to sneak in. This set-up looked horrendous and every time my husbands shift changed we had to reconfigure the whole window set-up all over again. After much searching I decided to give Shift Shade a try and I was very pleased with my purchase, the room is completely dark! This product works so well that when you wake up you don't even know what time of day it is. Installation is also easy and quick As a side note, this is a great company with great customer service! We had a minor issue with one of the shades and I sent an email to the company on Sunday afternoon and received a reply almost immediately. They sent us a replacement shade on Monday which we received on Wednesday. That kind of customer service is almost unheard! I would recommend this product and this company to anyone.

Solving your kids' sleep problems, one window at a time
When we built our house we wanted windows, windows, windows! We got them and all their lovely and wonderful light....only to have a bunch of kids who wake up the MOMENT the sun rises and refuse to go asleep when the sun is still shining. Explain a 7 pm bedtime in mid July when the sun stays up until 10 pm! In lieu of becoming one of those exhausted parents whose kids stay up all night and then wake up at the crack of dawn, we searched for window coverings. A designer suggested black out lining on our curtains. Yay, right? No, not yay. Blackout lining on curtains allows in so much light it's ridiculous, at least for my dark-craving kiddos. My next step? Ordering these babies. They were a cinch to install and block any and all light! It's so pitch black in my kids' rooms now that I regularly walk into walls after I have kissed them goodnight and turned off their bedside table light. THAT IS DARK, people. I can also vouch for their customer service department who helped resolve an issue I kept having keeping the bottom pole in place. They even offered to replace poles if I inadvertently cut them too short. Easy to order, great price, works fabulously, and easy to trouble shoot. There is not much else I can say!

Works
Starting with the negative: installation is horrible. They really need to come up with a better way to install this fabric. Maybe they should contact companies that make blackout drapes and sell this technology to them so that it could be pre-sewn onto drapes. Anyhow, I didn't bother with the rods. I was prepared to be inventive with installing these since I had read many reviews. So, All I did was measure the window and cut it about 2 inches bigger; I then used push pins to install it. Another good idea would be to sew a pocket and use a tension rod to install it. I don't have a sewing machine or I would have probably done that. Another thing I wasn't happy about is that it says it covers a window that is 38x72, so I ordered two of these. I come to find out the seller includes extra fabric (which is really nice actually), but it would have been nice to know the exact dimensions of the fabric since people install it differently and in the end, I only needed one order of this to cover two windows. Okay, now for the positive: this stuff truly works. I have purchased blackout drapes two times in the past. The most recent blackout thermal drapes that my toddler & preschooler have do not help in the least bit. Both kids have east-facing windows, so when the sun comes up, their room is bright and hot. The morning after I installed these, I could immediately tell a difference in the temperature of their rooms. And their room is pitch black! I personally love that because it's easier for them to nap during the day as well. So, yes: this helps keep out the light and heat; I'm sure it'll also work to keep out some of the winter cold as well. Overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for blackout drapes or shades.

REALLY is black out material
This is my second Black out "shade" from ShiftShade. If you want a dark room, this is the ONLY product I've found that actually works. You can close this thing in the middle of the day in August in the midwest and it is dark as night in your room. I'm only giving it a 4 out of 5 because of the amount of work I had to put into making this a workable solution for my house. It is, in fact, NOT a shade. Not in the traditional sense. With the materials it comes with it is a permanent fixture and not retractable as you would imagine a "shade" to be. If you want to make it so that you can have the black out effect sometimes and be able to see out of your window other times, you have to come up with your own solution. Liking the ability to occasionally see out of my windows, I needed to retrofit this to make it work. I used 2 solutions. For the first I made a 2 inch open ended pleat at one end of the black out sheet to create a curtain-like opening. I did this by using Liquid Stitch because I didn't want to puncture the sheet and risk a tear in the future. Then I hung it on a curtain rod mounted to the inside of my window frame. When I want to use my window as a window, I pull the sheet aside and tie it back like a curtain. For a much wider window, I cut my long sheet in half and then used curtain clamp rings on an interior mounted curtain rod to attach to the window. This solution lets a little light in at the top, but was all I could do since I had to use the sheet horizontally in order to cover the space. This is a "me" and my retrofit issue, though, and not that of the material. These solutions allow me to have this wonderful black out option for my family who enjoy sleeping in coffin-like blackness and the beauty of sunshine when I want to see out of my windows. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who needs a dark room to sleep. In fact, I am purchasing my third sheet now that I know how to tackle the "open window" issue.

Quick & Easy with no damage or residue left behind when removed
These work SO wonderfully! Complete blackout when I am working night-shift and sleep during the day. Super quick and easy to remove with no damage or residue left behind when I want to remove them; takes a couple minutes to pop them right back in. The instructions were easy to follow to make an exact fit for my windows. Another plus for me is that my apartment requires that all curtains/blinds/window coverings be of light color to present a uniform exterior aesthetic; these are light in color so SCORE! Thanks for a great product that makes all the difference in me being able to sleep! One tip: I marked 6 points (with a Sharpie) on my ShiftShades once I cut them to exact size where I place the rod-ends in the window. This makes it super easy to install quickly again after I have taken it down...easier for one person to install!

Product is not what it seems to be
This is the first time I have ever written a review for any product, period. I have had many bad products come my way and still never wrote a review but I feel that customers need to know the truth about this product. The product is very deceptive. It says clearly that no hardware is required and that it is easy installation. The instruction manual said I need a hacksaw and safety goggles in order to complete this product. You basically need to saw fiberglass rods which by the way, burns your skin if you get any of the dust from it on you. Then you have to shove the rods in three sections of the curtain. They expect you to jam the rods into the corners to hold the tarp in place. Not only is this product overpriced but you are paying for a whole day project that could have been made easier for the consumer if they actually cared about the CONSUMER!!!! The actual tarps do work for the sunlight but you're better off just duct taping blackout blinds over your window because these look the same aesthetically. I usually just brush bad products off and don't let it bother me but with the clear lie about "easy installation" the seller should be ashamed of themselves. Those dust particles from using a hacksaw to saw the rods is especially impossible to clean up so make sure to do it outside so children/pets won't step in it. They're much better blackout blinds out there for cheaper and much higher quality.

For room darkening. It’s perfect
1st room darkening product I have tried that actually darkened the room to almost total darkness in the middle of the day. I’ve worked nights for a few years now. And I’ve tried many different products and tricks through the years. This product alone actually creates total darkeness in the middle of the day. The install is fairly simple, cut a couple fiberglass rods to size and possibly trim the vinyl to just over sized so you don’t have a ton of bulk extra fabric. This can be done easily with a simple hacksaw and scissors. The install is not permanent they are just held in by tension from the rods. Which is nice when you want to remove it. And to put back in place only take a minute or two per window. The first time putting it in it does take some trial and error to see how to get it to seal around all corners and sides. But it’s not bad at all. The 1 and only downfall. This product is not winning any beauty contests. I would highly reccomend a set of blinds in front of the curtain. With a set of blinds the vinyl is out of sight and works very well. Should not interfere with manipulation or function of blinds if both are properly installed.

A kit, not a finished product, but it's functional enough.
(Posted by Ariel's husband, James, who installed the things.) Let's talk about what this thing is, and what it isn't. It IS a very effective light blocking shade, with certain caveats. It's NOT a fully finished product. It's a kit. There's a reason that 3 out of the 4 photos on Amazon show the product hidden behind a venetian blind. You get fiberglass rods, which you have to cut down. And you get a chunk of vinyl coated cloth. You will need to cut the cloth down to fit the window. There's a lot, and for those of you mounting this in your infant/toddler's room, you don't want them grabbing the extra cloth and pulling everything down. The next thing you know, they'll have swallowed the rubber caps from the end of the fiberglass rods... And the last thing you want is the splintery end of a hand-cut fiberglass rod in kiddo's mouth. Yes, you need to cut the rods to fit, too. To their credit, their advice on cutting the rods is pretty good, but you're still cutting fiberglass by hand, and it can splinter. They're not blinds, they're just window covers. That's an accurate name. They don't retract, they don't mount, they don't roll up, they're just fabric pieces pressed into place by bent fiberglass rods. These covers work well if you leave 1-2" of extra fabric around the edges, to reach all the way into the corners. These window covers do NOT work well if there's a lot of installing and un-installing: Where the rods pinch the fabric into place, there are points of contact where the pressure is higher. And at those points, the vinyl can wear off, and then the light comes through those spots. As kits go, it's a decent one. It feels like a very much jerry-rigged way to put up a light-blocking shade, but it works well enough.
