Superb bass, and a little extra quiet too
As an introduction, I have a technical background and many years experience in electronics, and have worked as an electronics engineer in an audio company at one time. There are a large number of "noise canceling" headphones on the market. Most of them use digital electronic trickery that subtracts away some of the noise around the listener. These Maxell HP/NC headphones are different - they use a tiny microphone that "listens" to the sound the headphones make, and ensure that this sound exactly matches the electrical signal from your mp3 player or other audio source. This has the effect of removing some of the ambient noise, since that noise is not present in the electrical signal going into the headphones. But even better, it also reduces the distortion and flattens the frequency response of the headphones where it counts most - at your ear. As a result, this HP/NC family of headphones has a far more accurate bass response than any other lightweight on-the-ear (supra-aural) headphone. Normally, only over-the-ear (circumaural) headphones produce this sort of deep and accurate bass. So, these headphones quieten the background noise a little bit, and as a bonus, give you much more accurate deep bass than other on-the-ear headphones of similar size and weight. For me, the second feature is what I like most about them. For those with an electronics background: what the HP/NC design does is apply negative feedback around the entire headphone, including the acoustic sound pressure level at your ear, by sensing this with a tiny microphone built into each earpiece. Negative feedback flattens the frequency response and lowers harmonic distortion, which is why these 'phones have such deep and accurate bass. The negative feedback is applied only at frequencies below roughly 1 kHz, so the phones have pretty accurate bass and mid frequencies.Later models of the Maxell HP/NC phones (HP/NC-III, HP/NC-IV) have the same type of electronic design, but the headphones themselves are bigger, heavier, bulkier, and less comfortable. Also to my ears the treble response is a little dull. A pity.

Great headphones for two months
I borrowed these headphones from my dad and decided to get an over the ear pair for myself, but wanted to check out other brands. I looked for at least an hour at all different brands and read hundreds of reviews. Bose, Skull Candy, Beats by Dre. After all the searching, I came to the conclusion that these are as good as any for the price. The bass is not loud but it is enough to gauge if it will be loud out of a speaker. They do actually fit perfectly around my ear without touching any part of my ear. I can wear them for hours. They get hot after a little but what headphones don't. Its funny when I see people complain about that. You have no air getting to your ears, of course they will get hot. Anyway, love these headphones.I make dub step music mixes and they get played through large powered speakers in a pretty large building. I use these headphones to get an idea of how it will sound in this venue with regards to volume and bass. These do the job for me!!I guess the headphones my dad had were made with better quality assurance than the ones I bought. The left headphone stopped producing sound completely and could not get it working again. I treat my things with great care and never handled these headphones any way but gently. Not sure the problem. I did have 5 stars but had to reduce to 2 stars. Would have went to 1 star, but the sound quality was actually good as I stated above.

Awful headphones. Don't waste your time.
I just got the NC-II headphones and they're awful. Not even worth the 1-star I had to give it. There's nothing redeeming about them. They say "noise cancelling" but it doesn't even quiet the noise from my computer's fan. There's no discernible difference between when the switch is on or off. In fact there's a scratchy noise when it's on. The plastic has a cheap feel to it and the packaging is that impossible to open unnecessarily plastic non-recyclable stuff. The 3.5mm plug doesn't even get past my iPhone's bumper. I had a nice pair of Panasonic headphones before they got left on a bus and I should have gone back to them. Buyer beware!

Nice for lawn cutting.
While these are ok sounding, they have a feature that makes them one I use often. I bought these cheap. They offer pretty decent noise cancelling, for cutting the lawn. Also, they come in handy for when I'm at workCounting beats and mixing, these headphones with the noise reduction, make it so much better to dial in.As everyday headphones the sound and it's delicate wired nature, may turn some people off. They are somewhat comfortable, battery life is great, and comes with a carrying bad. No quarter inch adapter, not too many people need it anymore. All in all, a bit delicate, wires can become weak at junctions. They do what I want them to do, so I buy a couple and keep a pair as backup for gig.I own Grado, too bright, Beyerdynamic, my favorite set, and briefly had Bose, way too pricey, and nowhere near neutral in sound. If they were more durable, I would rate them higher. If you're careful with them and want cheap noise cancelling headphones, they are worth it.

Headphones Maxell
I really like these and they do cut out the noise, only one thing I don't care for id the piece that hangs on the cord. It holds batteries in it so the batteries of your player can last longer in energy.Nice idea but awkward in use. It is heavy in weight and in a bad spot. This little box should have been higher up towards the head instead of the middle of the cord. However it is a nice headphone and studioquality.

No good
This product does not work as stated by maxell, it somewhat muffles noise but no more than would be expected by putting normal earphones over your ears.
