A Small Modification Makes a Big Improvement
From a few previous reviews, I inferred that the snap mechanism was too stiff to be tripped by a rat on some of the traps. I checked mine out and indeed this was the case. Basically it took took much weight to trip the rat trap. A problem like this would render the trap useless, however I’ve found a solution to make it work. Just use a rubber band around the base to help add a little extra weight to spring the trap. You have to position the rubber band in the right spot. The way to do this is, with the rubber band in place, try to set the trap. If it doesn’t catch, move the band back a bit and try again until the mechanism catches. Now, move the rubber band still a little further back because you don’t want the trap to release too soon before the rat has a chance to get into the trap. See the photo. Anyway I hope this works for you and you have luck catching your pests.

Rats B Gone (er dead...)
I first bought two VIctor plastic rat traps from Lowes (M144-2B). I barely caught the leg of onerat with those, and then they simply would not spring. Peanut butter eaten and no animals in sight. Then I bought two Tomcat Rat Snap Traps, set them out right beside the other brand - also with myfavorite Jiff peanut butter. Next morning = 2 dead rats in 2 Tomcat Traps !!!The geometry must be right on with Tomcat because both rats had their heads crushed. Happy customer.

works well
this trap has some serious spring power, caught 3 big rats in my house in a day and a half, theres a bridge behind my house thats being repaired and i guess with all the noise and digging the rats are goin to the houses close to the bridge but this thing has killed 2 instantly and caught 1 by the arm, i also tied twine to the trap so they don't run off, helped with the last rat, he tried to get under the couch

Worked well
This trap worked very well, except it did not kill the rat! It did hold the animal even though it tried to escape. Based on the strength of the spring, I thought it would catch and kill immediately.

100% Worth the $
I’ve caught so many rats with this trap! Just put a piece of dog food with peanut butter on it, and you’re guaranteed to catch one overnight! Usually they die instantly but I have had some issues where they just got caught and we had to do the dirty work. Not my favorite scenario :/

Definitely worth a try!
Was haunted for weeks by a HUGEEE rat, put this out and BOOM he was gone that same night I put it out. Used some bread and peanut butter. Super easy to set, durable, easy to get ride of rodent in end, and great value for the item!

NOT - 'The Best Rat Trap Ever!' as I had written in an earlier review
THIS IS AN UPDATE of my formerly glowing report on these traps:Am going back to the horrible old wooden based ones because THEY DO NOT BREAK like these Tomcat PLASTIC traps do!Got my first Tomcat Trap at a local store in 2021 - worked like a charm and STILL DOES!I decided to up my catch when the Rats BEGAN TO TRY and move in for winteR 21-22 So I got two MORE Tomcat Traps in Nov & BOTH ended up with BROKEN BAIT CUPS after snapping their first rat.OK - I worked around that by putting some peanut butter on the floor of the trap UNDER the trigger plate. It worked but was messy and required soaking and washing to get the old bait and goo off. Not a fun job but oh, well. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.I ordered one more Tomcat Rat TRap this fall and THAT TOO ENDED UP WITH A BROKEN BAIT CUP - yesterday - when it caught its first rat. Will take some fotos of the broken bait cup flange and post later. Why this is happening I have no clue. The first one from 2021 is just fine. The traps from here aren't. Maybe the mfg changed the plastic recipe? Knockoffs? Don't know... all I know is that when the rat gets caught one of the flange things that holds the bait cup in place when you twist it into the hole where it goes. The trap is constructed so that there is NO overtwisting possible so its not something I am doing. The result is that when you lift the trap to release the carcass the bait cup falls out because the flange has broken.SO - Like I said - back to the horrible old wooden based ones which NEVER BREAK.~~~This WAS my glowing report:Definitely catches rats. I'd post a foto of the carcasses mine have caught but that would be crude.A word of caution for new users: These are SUPER POWERFUL so if yu have a cat or dawg - put this trap behind some sort of screen or under something that the rats can get into but small noses and tiny fingers can't. I use an old oven rack propped up against the wall (which has a nail in it to keep it from falling) in the sun-porch and that does the trick.Oh, yeah - as with ALL rat Traps - attach a string or wire to them and anchor it to something else so on the very rare instance the rat isn't dispatched - the trap does not disappear along with a very pissed off rat.Note to the mfg: the little cup thingy for peanut butter works nicely but IF the trap is cold & bounces around in the process of doing it's job - the flange that holds the cup in place sometimes breaks and it's hard to remove and refill. That recently happened so I just put the peanut butter under the flap and in the back... SNAP! Worked like a charm.THE BEST THING ABOUT THESE TRAPS aside from their power is the step on feature - you just put the bait in and put the trap on the floor and step on the back and it is set. Works great in reverse too when you wan to remove the rat.

Not as effective with smaller rats or mice
I mixed up a couple of these Tomcat devices with my usual big wooden rat traps. The wooden traps performed as usual - quickly killing rats, mice, and chipmunks. However, the Tomcat traps didn't catch anything as the trigger was not sensitive enough for smaller rodents. I could see the rodents sitting on the Tomcat trigger eating the bait on the camera video. I have a attached a couple photos here. Some customers suggest adding a rubber band over the trigger to help with smaller rodents. I will be sticking with my old school wooden traps for the future.
