Comparing it to the Original wax
I'd like to comment on my first impressions with the extra grit before I compare the two. First off, concerning what others have said: -It doesn't leave your beard feeling like there's sand in it. The grit is very fine and I only notice it when rubbing it in my hands. Don't worry about the grit! -it is very dark, so if you have a white beard I wouldn't recommend it. -The smell is strong in the can, but will die down after a little while. I don't think that it smells much like liquorice from the anise, more spicy like clove. As to the smell I like it a lot. The original does have a stronger anise ( liquorice smell) and I like the scent of that one too. -It's very easy to rub into your hands and the beard. I would say softer then the original wax. -now as to hold! Honest Amish says this is on par with the original wax, but I have found it to be slightly lighter than the original. As far as hold goes in the lineup I'd say (lightest to heaviest ) HD beard balm(light), extra grit wax(light/medium ), original wax(medium ). -also, as advertised, it works very well as a hair balm. I have short hair about an inch or so on top and tight on the sides. -Has a matte finish to it, and the original wax has more of a shine. So all in all I like this wax for what it is. Great smell. Doesn't make my beard feel sandy like I thought it would. Light/mid hold(works best with a freshly shampoo'd beard, I know some only shampoo a few time per week). Works in my hair. If I would to choose one over the other I'd think I'd go with the Original wax over the extra grit(but that could change), as I like the stronger hold and I don't mind the shine. I've never tried the original in my hair, just beard. As with all honest amish products its all made from quality ingredients and they're a great company. Hope this was helpful. And beard on! *update* After using the extra grit for a few more days some other things I've noticed. -after applying to a clean beard out of the shower, it seems to almost dry and is not waxy like the original. - it give my beard a lot of body, more than the original I'd say. The more I use this wax the more I like it! I think that maybe I now like this more than the original. Definitely try it out and don't judge too quickly.

The "Grit" gets the job done
Exceptional product. I have yet to find anything that comes even close to the quality of this beard wax. To start this is not a girly beard wax for only styling. I'd even argue that its probably not for everyone if you are partial to a specific perception of what a beard wax should do for the beard or how it should ultimately improve the aesthetic quality of your beard. I have a very coarse curly beard that with age has grown to develop a lot white hair. This beard wax does an amazing job at sculpting my bread when wet ( which is when I prefer to use it ) or when its dry. If you read the ingredients label on the box you will find that this beard wax does double duty: provides enough stiffness to sculpt the beard but also is a super amazing emollient rich beard wax. I said super emollient rich; not greasy. Okay so now for the compromise: I've read a few reviews on here about the scent and grit tint of the beeswax. Here is my opinion: I don't like scents that smell "manufactured". This beeswax smells earthy and natural where licorice root is one of the main ingredients of the aroma therapeutic oil composition. For some it might not be a preferred scent. I happen to like it very much because it is consistent with other scents I enjoy like Malin and Goetz Cannibus Oil and Aesop Marrakesh Intense. About the tint. I tried once tinting my beard with over the counter beard color. I'll never do that again. The tint of this beard wax is not an artificial color or dye. The grit color is natural and for me it helps to balance out the differences in tone in my beard. Overall I'd say depending on your beard type and grooming preferences, this beard wax is an amazing product and it does exactly what its advertised to do.

Quality product, but not as much hold as the Original Beard Wax
Everyone has different experiences, this is mine. This product may work better or worse for you than it did for me. After using Honest Amish's "regular strength" beard wax for about a year and a half, I decided to try out the Extra Grit Beard Wax. I just finished the tin the other day. It lasted me about 3.5 months. My beard is about 4 in long and is very curly. I shower in the morning, then apply beard oil (homemade) followed up by a Cap'n Crunch Crunch Berry-sized amount of Extra Grit beard wax. Here is my review. Grit: I believe the grit in Extra Grit is clay. Again, your mileage may vary, but some of the other reviews mentioning the grit seemed a little over dramatic after using this product myself. I never noticed any of the grit coming off onto my clothes or even my hands as I touched my beard throughout the day. I never noticed any on my pillow nor on my SO's face. It wasn't "like rubbing dirt into my beard." The grit was noticeable in the hands but all but disappeared in the beard. After working the product into my beard, I would have to gives my hands a quick wipe on my towel as there was grit in the wrinkles of my palms, but it was never hard to get clean, and in fact was quite easy. Hold: The hold of Extra Grit is why I liked the product, but didn't love it: 4 stars vs 5. Seeing this product labelled as "Beard Wax: Extra Grit!" made me think the hold would be similar to that of the original Honest Amish beard wax, if not stronger, but I found it to be more along the lines of a heavy duty beard balm. The product itself was softer than the original which did make it easier to scoop out with your thumb vs the original, but in my experience the on-the-beard hold was weaker. If I were to list beard products in order of increasing hold, it would be as follows: Au natural, Beard Oil, Beard Balm, Extra Grit Beard Wax, Original Beard Wax. This product would be perfect if you need something a little stronger than a balm but a little weaker than the Original Beard Wax, but for me, I need a little more hold than Extra Grit can provide. Scent: Extra Grit has a stronger licorice/clove scent than the original beard wax. It is not unpleasant and not overpowering and fades after a while, which in my book is a good thing. Overall, I am glad I tried Extra Grit out but I will be going back to the Honest Amish Original beard wax. Since they are about the same price, I would recommend trying Extra Grit on your search for beard products that work with your own beard.

The politically correct beard wax
Stuff is good stuff. Forget all the other details and wimpy indecisive comparisons, here goes all you need to know: - Good for darker beards. Lighter beards may need regular wax or lighter beard opinions. - Good for dry beards with strays. Decent moisture gives you the lustrous manly call of the wild. - Best applied to warm dampish beard after shower, not cold water because it will make it look like tiny flakes of wax rather than silky, shiny and sensually appealing to sweet feminine creatures who appreciate your masculinity. - Grit is part of being man, and this product underscores that. Society is making you soft. Rub a little dirt on it... And stop watching TV. - Decent hold. If you need more then use glue and quit whining on review boards... "whaaaa just not what I thought it was so I spent time complaining online". - If you complain about the smell, maybe you should find something else to complain about... Or go cut wood or something. - Makes the difference between a masculine, well-kempt ravishing dude and "just another idiot with a beard". By the way, if you have a "rotation" of beard products, you might need to check your man card. If you use any hair product because a woman told you to, then give up your man card. Simply put... Stop thinking so much. Enjoy manhood. Let the beard dominate the landscape for decades to come. Five stars brothers (and ladies with beards to be politically correct) Update 8/2017: Bought more. Obviously. Pro tips for young beard growers... 1. Give it more than 4 months. 2. Trim to keep neat, but not too much. 3. Feminists will tell you "You look better without a beard." IGNORE THEM. Eventually compliments come from the people who matter. 4. Use the wax, especially if you have a corporate job. 5. Become friends with your beard. It will never let you down. It will never talk back to you. It will never take... YOUR FREEDOM!!!

At first I totally hated it because of the smell
I gave it a few weeks before i wrote my review. At first I totally hated it because of the smell. However, I feel the advantages of this product outweigh the smell. And the smell seems to go away after a few hours so i chose to live with it. The three stars are because of the smell! What I like the most: --This product does not leave a "shiny" look on your beard which I really liked. Your beard looks more natural; your beard pretty much looks like theres no product in it. --Holds well. Keep in mind however! This is advertised as having a MEDIUM hold. If you need a product with superior hold this product might not be for you. However it holds well, medium wise, and it holds as it should all day! I still find my beard holds just as well by the end of the day, which i really enjoyed. *Side note: I feel the reviews that say this wax gets "clumpy" in your beard used too much wax in their beard! They suggest you use a pea sized ball in your beard. I have tried using more than this in my beard and did notice it looked a bit clumped in my beard. If you need more hold, I suggest you don't use more, but purchase a wax with superior hold. -- Price! Very reasonable price for a good organic product. What I didn't like: --- The smell! oh man i tried to give it a chance but the smell, to me, does not smell pleasurable. I really tried to give it a chance and see if the smell grew on me. Where the smell doesn't entirely deter me from using the product (I still use this wax everyday), I still don't "like the smell". I would really be for this product if it came in an unscented form, as does another honest amish product. If it wasn't for the smell this product would receive 5 stars from me. Its a licorice smell by the way. If you like that smell it might be for you.

Skeptic turned fanatic.
I reluctantly ordered this version of the beard wax because I wanted to have a bit more control that it appeared was provided by the original beard wax as per the reviews. It is a bit strange, there is a gritty consistency to it, as I'm sure you could deduce from the product name. It can end up putting some little black dots on your hands when you stroke your beard (admit it, you do it to) but it doesn't do it as bad the longer the wax is in. My young son sometimes gets the "grit" on his hands or face, but it just brushes right off... and it's made of all organic materials so I don't really worry that much anywho. I for one, think the smell is amazing, and so does my wife (think licorice, anise, and the sweetness of beeswax it's woodsy and manly as bearskin boxers) It gives my beard shape, keeps it all together, and has softened it over time. It takes a pretty special product to keep a man and his beard together through sweltering southwest summers... and this wax did the trick. I just drag my fingernail through it until it's covered by about 1/4" of wax, distribute that chunk over my first three fingertips, rub my fingers together keeping the wax rather consolidated on the tips of my fingers until it melts and stroke it in from chops to chin. It's easy, and it does wonders. If the product itself doesn't roll your socks, the customer service from these guys will. If you're on the fence, just get some, they'll take care of you either way.

At its very best in 2021!
I first ordered this product nearly two years ago in 2019. I really enjoyed it as it had good hold and wasn’t greasy. However I didn’t order it again, because it had a strong liquorice smell and the grit easily got under my short nails. I’ve now ordered it again in 2021 and the product has gone from good to great!!! There is no longer a liquorice smell and the wax has more a neutral tea/peppermint smell. It still has very good hold for shaping a beard (though it’s more a balm with wax and hold, as opposed to having the strength of a pure wax), and thankfully Honest Amish has solved the grit under the nails issue! I have Afro hair and would 100% recommend this product. It is dark in texture so may work better with darker coloured hair, however it does dissolve well into the beard. I liked it back then, but I’m a true fan now. Safe to say I’ll be sticking with this product for the foreseeable future.

Excellent product
The smell is similar to the plain/original/yellow wax, but has a bit less of the lemon/jojoba/beeswax smell, and a bit of black licorice and smoke smell added. The different in smells between the two isn't that pronounced, and it's apparently pleasing to the ladies, who will most likely be the only other people close enough to smell it. The hold is a bit stronger too, and there is fine clay-dust in it, so the product tends to make the hair look a little bit darker and thicker. In short: good hold, darkens the hair a bit, thickens the beard a bit, and smells nice. Will definitely buy again long-term.
