SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB - Up to 1050MB/s Read Speeds (Older Model)

I've been a loyal customer of SanDisk for quite some time now, and the SanDisk Extreme 2TB portable NVMe SSD continues to impress me with its exceptional performance and reliability. This is actually my third purchase of this fantastic device, and I felt compelled to share my positive experience.First and foremost, the speed of this SSD is simply mind-blowing. With read speeds of up to 1050MB/s and write speeds of 1000MB/s, it's like having a turbocharger for my data transfers. Whether I'm transferring large video files or working on intensive photo editing tasks in Lightroom, this SSD handles everything with ease. It significantly reduces the time I spend waiting for files to load or transfer, making my workflow smoother and more efficient.The durability of this SSD is another standout feature. Its water and dust-resistant design give me peace of mind when I'm on the go. I can confidently take it with me on outdoor shoots or in less-than-ideal conditions without worrying about data loss. SanDisk has truly built a device that can withstand the rigors of real-world use.Moreover, the sleek black design of this SSD is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. It's compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry in my bag or pocket. The USB-C connectivity ensures fast and hassle-free connections with my various devices.What I appreciate most about the SanDisk Extreme 2TB portable NVMe SSD is its excellent value for money. SanDisk consistently delivers top-notch performance and durability at a price that won't break the bank. In fact, I've made it a yearly tradition to upgrade to a new one because the improvements are always worth it.

The first one I got arrived looking fine, but after writing to it for a little bit of time the front popped off around the bottom of the casing between the front pannel and the rubber bumper. (See picture). You could see the inside of it quite clearly if you didn't press it back into place, but it'd pop again after a few minutes, slowly opening up again. After describing this fault to Amazon, they issued a replacement and I sent this one back - after wiping it completely. I put it down to being a defective unit. Does happen sometimes, nothing is perfect.The replacement arrived and I started playing around with it.It came formatted with ExFAT, as well, so be aware, if your device doesn't support ExFAT, you just need to format it to something that can read it.I got speeds faster than advertised, 1086MBps read (vs 1050MBps advertised) and 1038MBps write (vs 1000MBps advertised).There was 1.81TiB of usable space on the 2TB version I purchased, which is absolutely expected and not false advertising as some of the comments suggest. (A quick note to those people, a TB is not the same as a TiB. The 2TB version is 2TB, which is ~1.81TiB, what it shows in the OS, albeit falsely labeled in Windows).The leaflet suggests I can update the firmware on it, and should do that when I get it, however I am unable to find anything on the website about this and I assume it should be fine. It says it has hardware encryption capabilities, which uses the software provided but I never trust that stuff. I just formatted it to EXT4 in Linux (My OS of choice) and used Veracrypt, which you can use in Windows (and MacOS, I think), to encrypt my drive with FDE (Full Disk Encryption).The drive is extremely responsive and I was able to fill it up with my files, and was able to read them all afterwards. It should be noted that whilst the first one got hot during operations, the second one seemed to run quite cool. I'm not sure why this is and I'm not going to complain either.It seems to be quite solidly built and I do recommend it if you want to store lots of things, but it may be more expensive than a hard drive or the equivalent in M.2/NVMe. I got mine during Prime Day so it was quite cheap.All in all I highly recommend it. It's a solid drive and time will tell if it's reliable. I will update this after a year or so.Edit: Nearly two years later and it's still going strong. Massive thumbs up for that. Upgrading to 5/5.

Bought this to get all my data from my old laptop and have it safe until I bought the new one.It is working at a great speed and does everything that it is needed from itEven my husband is now wanting to buy one for himself

Good drive overall, but not without a few frustrations.Performance is solid and it handles large files well, which is why I use it as my main drive for projects. Build quality also feels strong and durable, so it holds up well for regular use.The main issue I have had is occasional dropouts. It does not happen constantly, but when it does it can be frustrating, especially if you are actively working on projects.I have seen suggestions online about updating the firmware to fix this, but that process wipes the drive. If you are already using most of the storage, that is not a realistic option without having another drive to move everything onto first.Another thing to consider is the price. It is very expensive, especially for higher capacities like 4TB, so it is definitely an investment.Despite that, it still works well overall and I continue to use it as my main drive. It is just something to be aware of depending on your workflow.Overall, a fast and well built SSD, but with a few reliability quirks and a high price point to consider.

Edit: July 11th 2021I have now, finally managed to get a spanking new PS5 console. All the PS4 games stored on the SanDisk are recognised by the PS5 and can be played directly from the extended storage. The speed gains for HZD mentioned below are still maintained.Never, ever disconnect the SSD when the PS5 is in standby mode. Only remove it or reconnect it when the console is completely turned off otherwise you risk corrupting the entire SSD.Also, do not connect it via the USB A connector on the front of the console. Either use the front USB C port or either of the rear ports.This is a review for the SanDisk Extreme 1TB Portable NVMe SSDWas running out of space on my PS4 Pro and weighed up all the options for candidates for Extended Storage. With the prospect of eventually getting a PS5 (sigh), I wanted a device that would be somewhat future-proof when connected to the next-gen console.The device is barely much larger than a credit card and about three or four credit cards thick. Connected it to the rear USB port and, because the supplied cable is so damn short, it had to rest on the top of the console which is not ideal given the amount of heat that the PS4 Pro chucks out. It was instantly recognized by the console and formatted for extended storage in a matter of seconds, giving about 930Gb of extra space.Moving games from the internal disk to the Sandisk is simple. CyberPunk 2077, which is about 109Gb, took roughly 40 minutes so an average of 3Gb / min. This of course is limited by the read speed of the internal PS4 disk rather than the write speed of the Sandisk SSD.The real test of course is in how much faster the games load so I did a test using Horizon Zero Dawn. My biggest gripe with this fabulous game is the long load times between location changes, especially if going from say Meridian to the Frozen Wilds Cut.For those familiar with HZD, when you finish the game it puts you back at the start of the Looming Shadow quest, so that was my save point for this test.With the game installed on the internal disk drive, the time taken from hitting "Continue" to getting control of Aloy was 2min 11secs. I then moved the game to the Sandisk Extended Storage and repeated the test. The time taken from hitting "Continue" to getting control of Aloy was dramatically reduced to just 46 seconds, a speed increase of almost triple. I then tested travelling to various remote campfires and the increased speed was maintained. This is an incredible result.I then did various tests with God of War but did not notice any appreciable difference in load times although the initial load screen was definitely faster. I can only assume that some games may be better optimized than others. I will be testing it with Ghost of Tsushima in the near future.So is it worth it?. If you play HZD then a very big YES.The Cons:Compared to a bog standard mechanical 1Tb external drive, it's £100 more expensive but you wouldn't gain any speed improvement. Looking ahead, however, I think it's worth paying the extra for an ultra fast SSD that will also do justice when connected to the next-gen PS5 console (big sigh again).The supplied cable is way too short. I've now got it connected with a 1Meter USB A to C cable so it can be placed away from any heat sources. In actual use it only gets moderately warm.

First, a disclaimer. I bought this because I wanted to share storage of stuff like photos, music, movies between my various computers and -- particularly -- the Kindle Fire 10 Plus tablet I bought around the same time.From that viewpoint, it was a dismal failure. It'll mount as a drive in the Fire but the Fire stuffs it up from the point of view of, well, everything else. It'll work perfectly with my PC and laptop but the Fire reports a problem with it that you fix at your peril.I'm not going to blame the drive for that.So connected to my laptop, I have a terabyte of connected storage that behaves, in speed terms, similarly to the internal SSD. Which is brilliant if what you're hoping for is portable media storage, or a fast backup device, or whatever.And it's very portable. You'll probably want a small case to keep it in (I use a generic, zipped MP3 hard case as it has a handy elasticated internal pocket and is a good way to keep it and its short-but-useful cable together.Oh, and the cable includes a USB-C to USB-A converter so if your device doesn't have a USB-C port, all is not lost.This is SSD performance, not thumbdrive performance. It looks and feels robust, solid, well built and I have no regrets despite the Fire's incompatibility with it.

UPDATE: 1 month into ownership, I'm still very happy with the drive. However, it's randomly started to disconnect from my computer. I have a 1TB version of the exact same drive (that I use in a far more intense manner) plugged in right next to it for hours--this 4TB drive I only use for Time Machine backups. As the Romans said: caveat emptor!This little solid-state NVMe drive just blew me away once I plugged it in and started putting things on it. I honestly never even considered that a simple hard drive would be able to do that!This device is the data-heavy user-on-the-go's ultimate dream. No more do I have to lug around a laptop or find clunky (and difficult to use) cloud storage solutions when I want to travel with a big amount of data (think CLI and IDE cached files). Connecting to this is a breeze, and it's been simple to format them with all of the MacOS Sonoma's available file systems (albeit I've only tried with the various APFS versions).Data transfer speeds are next level, compared to my brand new (but old tech) spinning disk HDDs. I actually initially bought a 1TB drive, then immediately (same day) bought the 4TB version after using it for only a few minutes. I was able to back up my entire laptop using Time Machine and used space of ~1.3 TB (i.e. first-time backup) in less time than it took me to make and eat lunch. I wish I had timed it. Alternatively, my now-secondary Time Machine spinning disk HDD is still plugging away at an interval snapshot update nearly 2 hours after plugging it in.Honestly, I might never go back to spinning disks again. This thing fits in your pocket or book bag or wherever! The one drawback is that I've accidentally misplaced it a couple of times already just because it's so dang small.

I am very late in writing the review, as I have been using it for more than three years and it works smoothly and excellently.

Die SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD überzeugt vor allem durch ihre sehr hohe Schreibgeschwindigkeit. Das ist der größte Pluspunkt für mich, denn im Vergleich zu anderen Festplatten fällt deutlich auf, wie schnell Daten übertragen werden können.Ich bin insgesamt sehr zufrieden mit dem Gerät. Die kompakte Größe ist praktisch und macht die SSD sehr mobil. Auch das Design ist ansprechend und wirkt robust.Abgesehen von der Geschwindigkeit ist es im Grunde eine typische externe SSD – sie erfüllt zuverlässig ihren Zweck, ohne besondere Überraschungen. Genau hier liegt aber auch der Vorteil: sie funktioniert einfach und unkompliziert.Insgesamt eine empfehlenswerte externe Festplatte, besonders wenn einem schnelle Schreib- und Lesezeiten wichtig sind.
