It doesn't hurt. It can have a spicy burn to it if you are a wuss. But the relief you get from it far outweighs any negative effects. I actually like the way it taste. You don't seem to build a tolerance to it like orajel.

Q: Can I use this on an extracted tooth in the gum?

It absolutely helped my gum pain after a root canal and extraction. It did not burn my gums but it did numb my lip and tongue for a short amount of time.

Place it directly on the cavity. My mother, who has since deceased, used this product for years. It’s wonderful!

You do nothing. Eugenol is a derivative of cloves, and is actually beneficial when consumed.
