Those are not accurate depictions of MSM production. The most common method is a reaction of sulfur with methane. In this process methanol (ethyl alcohol from natural gas) is combined with sulfur (hydrogen sulfide or carbon disulfide) in a vapor phase catalytic reaction to form DMS and methylmercaptan (MM; primarily used to make the essential amino acid l-methionine, which is a common dietary supplement). DMS has a number of industrial uses, including conversion to DMSO. This process is generally favored because of its high conversion yield and low energy usage. Some natural gasses contain over 90% sulfur compounds. By contrast, the less common paper mill waste method involves toxic chemicals and far greater energy input. After DSM is produced by either chemical synthesis, it is then oxidized with nitrogen dioxide in a multi-step process to form DMSO. Finally, MSM is produced from DMSO by the catalytic reaction of hydrogen peroxide with DMSO to further oxidize it (DMSO→DMSO2).  The process includes gas liquid phase oxidation to produce crude MSM, followed by reduced pressure distillation (vacuum distillation) for additional purification. The result is a fairly pure MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) that complies with food cGMPs.

Personally I have noticed a big difference in joint pain.  I am very active with a practice as a massage therapist for 37 years, I own a very active year old Bouvier pup, and we are out daily in the woods that I live in for a good long walk.  I am not a doctor or scientist, but I would say that just doing more actively promotes joint health.  I can't recommend this enough -

The FDA doesn't really regulate supplements. It's all on the honor system, but the website labdoor tests supplements for purity and efficacy as well as allergens.
