How long does the smell last? I unrolled the mat in my basement and after a week it smells like a Goodyear tire factory.

If you use the mat on a regular basis (i.e., three times a week to daily) the smell goes away within a couple weeks as the mat absorbs your body oils, which seem to neutralize the rubber odor. Leaving the mat out unrolled and unused will not help.

Is it really worth the high cost?

Depends on why you're considering this one -- if you're not set on any of the mat's specific attributes (high density, very sticky/grabby, eco-friendly, etc.), you can definitely find high-quality mats that get the job done admirably for a lower price. However, I don't know of any other mats that mimic the texture or density of this one.

Question 3

Does anyone know how to restore grip to this mat (if possible)? Had it 2 years, used to grip fine, now slides and bunches on standing poses eg warrior

Hi- As per the jade manufacture this is what they recommend: Here is a tip for mat cleaning to help with mat slipping.  We always recommend 3:1 ratio, 1 quart white vinegar, and 3 quarts water.  Lay the mat in a bathtub and pour this solution on it for 20 minutes.  If this do not work you can wash the mat in front loader wash machine with no soap or mild soap in hot water.  No oils or essential oils it tends to damage our mats.  Please lay or hang the mat over tile rack or someplace safe OUT OF SUNLIGHT!

Question 4

I have a carpet in my house. Is it a problem to put the mat directly over the carpet, or will it ruin the mat or make it slide?

Putting the mat on carpet shouldn't ruin it. It shouldn't slide much because it is rubber.  Putting it on carpet challenges your balance much more, as yoga is typically done on a flat surface...hence the mat.
