Tokyo Joe - Excellent Bogart movie, but no Bacall...
I like everything Bogart did, I wish he were coming out with more movies now because most new movies stink! Another great one, lesser known, is All through the Night. I've been addicted to cheesecake since I watched it though, so be careful. It is more the typical pre-Bacall Bogart movie with a lot of twists and turns. From what I have read Bogart was like his Joe character, a really good down to earth guy, but a hero when he needed to be. What a shame he wasn't around longer, but we have the great Casablanca, the Maltese Falcon, the African Queen, Tokyo Joe and others to watch, thanks to his all too short career.

Down and out in Japan
Tokyo Joe, set in postwar Japan, looks at the corruption and danger under U.S. occupation. In some ways a clone of Casablanca, Tokyo Joe has its own good scenes and twists. Japan as the setting for a film noir film is genius... black marketeering, smuggling, bribery, down-and-out imperial soldiers contrasted to law and order (in the form of the U.S. Army) makes for a unique filmscape. Humphrey Bogart is excellent in this film, but it has no other characters of note. This keeps Tokyo Joe from being a classic, in my opinion.

This movie, for me, is more personal than anything else. I was stationed in Japan for approximately 4 years, spoke Japanese BEFORE I got there, though I greatly improved, more-'N- MORE, while there, ...AND I got to know some "Ins-'N-Outs" of Japanese underground society that the tourist books, and the sleazy U.S. services guys who frequented the brothels..., etc, did NOT cover (i,e, a Japanese Oyabun (gang-boss) of the Yakuza was extremely impressed to be able to talk to a Black-American in Japanese). So I know especially what this movie said.

A great roll for Bogi where he was a bit on the dark side of the law, but came clean and saved the day with a big personal sacrifice. Bigger than life character that teaches old values. They just don't write them like that anymore, a real classic.

Curiosity Settled
Not one of Bogie's Best.

Great Bogart flick!
This was a suspenseful and interesting historical look into post-war Japan. The plot was great and the acting incredible, compared to today's dribble. I've seen many Bogart flicks, but this is a real gem.

Well worth wacthing
Obviously, as a Bogart fan, I liked this movie. Not one of his best (in my opinion) but worth watching. The post-war images of Tokyo added to the film's flavor.

Tokyo sloooow.
Apparently I have to write something here about this dull, dreary B movie Bogie, otherwise my star rating won't register. :)

Bogie
Well what can you say about the greatest actor that ever lived whatever film he starred in was excellent and this is no exception well worth the few pounds it cost
