Best budget toner I've tried
I recently went back to bleaching my hair .(best decision I've made since the beginning of the pandemic - I love fun colors, but blonde looks good on me. I also chopped all my hair off, so whether I'm going through a phase or just manic? Who knows.) Point is, I wanted something to make it look nice and ... not yellow. I don't have money to go spend at a salon. It's extremely expensive to get your hair bleached by a professional - I have just enough money to buy box bleach and make questionable decisions. This does the job - for toning that is, does nothing for the questionable decisions - and leaves my hair looking blonde, not bronze. I will say that I do apply it differently than many people might. I have fine, thick hair. And while I did lob it off into a pixie cut thanks to Georgia having the temperatures of the Devil's nether regions, I'd still like to keep what little of it I have looking nice and fresh - not fried. This shampoo isn't exactly moisturizing or softening. It's a shampoo carrying a coloring agent. So.. I treat it as such. Don't be surprised by how dark the color is. I was at first, and only used it in the shower for about 5 minutes. It didn't do much for me. I came out looking much the same. I want to clarify once again, these are the decisions I make in applying this product - this isn't a recommendation. But it sure as hell works for me. 1) Starting with dry hair, I plop this bad bitch on with some gloves on. DON'T FORGET THE GLOVES. It will stain your hands - but not the rest of your body. My biologist mother would probably have something to say about it being the way your hand skin is different from the skin on the rest of your body. Science and I are casual lovers. 2) I leave it on for anywhere from 25-40 minutes. It really depends on if I forget to set the timer or not. I usually forget to set the timer. I'm typing this review while still forgetting to set the timer - yes, I have it on right now, and am continuing to choose writing this instead of rubbing my two braincells together. Don't be like me. 3) Shower time! Rinse it all out. You may notice your hair feels a bit dry - once again, this isn't a moisturizing shampoo. It's less than $20 on amazon, don't get your hopes up. Instead, go in with a moisturizing mask. My hair needs some serious TLC, and the best moisturizer I've found for myself is Shea Moisture's Purple Rice Water Strength & Color Care Masque. I leave that and my skincare mask on for about 5 minutes while i wash my body, shave whatever I feel up to shaving that day, you know the deal. At least I assume it's 5 minutes. You know by now my track record with timers. 4) Rinse that equally bad bitch out. Your hair will feel much much softer. I add this step now for my wonder bread cousins. Our hair can look oily as hell if we just moisturize it - it probably doesn't know how to be treated right because we were raised on 3 in 1 bodywash, shampoo, and conditioner. Forgive it. Be patient with it. Go in with a good quality moisturizing shampoo. I use my Function of Beauty shampoo, and then follow that slight rinse up with my FoB conditioner. I may be gaslighting my hair. It's okay, it looks fine at the end of it all. 5) After letting that conditioner sit for the normal amount of time I let any conditioner sit, which is usually about a minute or two. I then rinse it out til I don't feel sticky. Finish up my shower routine, and at the end I put in my leave in conditioner. It's also a FoB product. I swear by the stuff, but this isn't a review for that. I'm gonna run out soon, and I have enough depression as it is. Lets change the subject. You should have beautifully toned hair! I will remind you not to make any decisions on if you like it or not UNTIL YOUR HAIR FULLY DRIES. Your hair will always look more bronze when it's wet. When my hair dries it's a completely different animal, and thanks to me adding that conditioning routine, it's soft as well. If that sounds like a lot of steps... well, it is. Your hair doesn't work for free. But I promise it doesn't take long. If you think 25-30 minutes in the shower for your FULL hair and body routine is a long time, you may have other issues that need addressing. But hey, I'm not a therapist. At the end of the day, I LOVE this stuff. And it's a gigantic bottle. I mean, about the length of my small dog. I'll get a lot of wear out of this stuff. I don't recommend washing your hair every day, and I don't recommend doing this deep cleanse and tone more than once a week. Wash your body all you want, but let your hair breathe. Dry shampoo is your friend. 5/5 stars for affordability and function. Now let me go set my timer.

One of the Best Purple Shampoos I've Tried
I've tried quite a few purple shampoos over the years, and this one has been one of my favorites for keeping brassiness under control. It has a rich, highly pigmented formula, so a little goes a long way. After just one use, my blonde looked brighter and cooler without feeling dull or overly ashy. It lathers well, smells pleasant, and didn't leave my hair feeling stripped or dry like some purple shampoos can. I usually leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing to get the best results. If you have highlighted, bleached, or naturally gray hair and want to maintain a cooler tone between salon visits, this is definitely worth trying. Just be sure to wear gloves if you're worried about staining since the purple pigment is very concentrated.

GIRL. You NEED this in your life.
I have naturally almost black, thick, Asian hair that is highly processed and toned to high heaven just so I can be blonde. Not just sandy blonde. Platinum blonde. Now, any โbottle blondeโ knows that purple shampoo is the sweet baby Jesus in a manger necessity that they MUST use if they donโt want to end up looking like a wannabe ginger with greasy orange-tinged hair. Itโs just that blonde life. I have tried almost every purple shampoo under the sun, ranging in process from $7 to $70 a bottle. The top contenders so far have been Davines Alchemic Shampoo in Silver, LโOrรฉal Shimmering Lights Purple Shampoo, and now, THIS. Fanola takes the cake and is hands down the winner when it comes to toning even the most stubborn brass out. Seriously. Your granny needs this. You need this. GIRL. Go buy stock in this company. The pictures really do speak for themselves. My package arrived sealed tightly - no mess at all. I think they caught on that they needed to fix the shipping method and it seems to have worked. I opted for the smaller $10 bottle, which is a steal! You get SOOOO much product! The shampoo itself is the darkest (almost black) purple Iโve ever seen. The consistency is a little more runny than say, Herbal Essences Shampoo. The smell is a little weird. Part chemical/black licorice being masked by a pleasant salon fragrance. Itโs certainly nothing unbearable and it goes away as soon as you wash with your own shampoo. Iโve smelled way worse purple shampoos. This is pretty good. Now, the instructions and most people will tell you to wash with it and leave it for 1-5 minutes. I donโt believe in following rules. Duh. I tried it in the shower on wet hair and left it on for about 10 minutes. Great results after just one use! And then, because I love a little lavender tint, I tried it on DRY hair, saturating it until almost black, and left it on for a whopping 30 minutes. Rinse until clear. And guess what? I LOVE IT. The lavender is not at all over powering but thereโs isnโt a hint of yellow/brass in my hair. I swear it even lightened my roots too! The pros: 1) Will definitely 100% work for you. 2) Absolutely does what it says and does it well. 3) Worth every penny (you get a ton of product). 4) You can choose the strength/umph. The Cons: 1) It WILL stain your hands. No really. Wear some gloves. Your welcome. It wonโt really stain your forehead, ears, or anything. The skin cells on the palms of your hands are similar to those in your hair and unlike the rest on your body. So, donโt worry about anything else other than your palms/nails. Glove it up! 2) It is rather drying, as most purple shampoos are. Get a good leave in conditioner and glop it on after you rinse in the shower. Put some coconut oil up in there. Moroccan Oil Hair Mask seems to work wonders for me. 3) You will become addicted to having white/super bright blonde hair. Photos in order: After, during, before, before, before, the very first time I used Fanola for just 10 minutes.

Awesome purple shampoo, NOT a toner.
Awesome purple shampoo, NOT a toner. Fanola makes a great purple shampoo. Again, this is a shampoo, NOT a toner. That being said, it still does an exceptional job of reducing brassiness in hair when properly used. I've been dying my hair 15+ years almost every color imaginable. I recently did several quarantine hair experiments and tried removing a lot of permanent hair dye build up by doing 2 applications of Color Oops and also a trick using baking soda, 10 volume developer and purple shampoo in addition to a fourth treatment that involved crushed up Vitamin C tablets, dish soap and purple shampoo and my hair was left very orangey and brassy afterwards. I used this purple shampoo after each hair experiment and it definitely took down the brassy tones. The instructions say you can use it on either damp or dry hair (this is listed under the how & when section on the listing). All you do is apply it to your hair like a regular shampoo and let it sit anywhere from a minute to 10 minutes for your desired outcome depending on the amount of brassiness you have. I opted for the full 10 minutes every time and it was definitely worth it because my hair was extremely brassy. I do recommend using gloves (as does the product) to prevent staining of the hands. I used it without gloves each time and had amazingly purple dyed hands that would take about 24 hours before fading away. You can use this shampoo once a week or whenever you are noticing unwanted brassy tones in your hair. I can solidly say that after each of these hair experiments and with having used this purple shampoo at least 5 times now that my hair has not dried out or become damaged at all and I was able to lighten my hair immensely! I do (and did) do an at home blowout hair treatment (or deep conditioning treatment) just because it makes your hair feel amazingly healthy and shiny afterwards. Again, The No Yellow Shampoo by Fanola will neutralize yellowness from pigment residue due to any form of lightening, including bleaching. It is a professional grade treatment formulated with a special violet pigment that neutralizes yellow and brassy tones and will leave your hair looking beautiful. The price is great and the shampoo arrived jn perfect condition and fast. The shampoo has a unique smell to it but it's not at all bad. I would definitely recommend this product.

One of the best purple shampoos Iโve used
The toning effect is incredible. If youโve just bleached your hair and itโs starting to look yellow or brassy, this shampoo works really well. After one wash, my hair looks much cooler, with that platinum, silvery tone that I love. The only thing to be careful about is not leaving it on for too long or using it too often. Itโs very pigmented, and if you overuse it, your hair can start to take on a purple tint. If you have blonde or heavily bleached hair, I definitely recommend keeping this in your routine.

My colorist recommended this and it really works (also: wear gloves!)
My hairstylist recommended this shampoo after I got blonde highlights, and now I understand why itโs so popular. If youโre dealing with brassy blonde hair, this shampoo gets the job done. ๐ Itโs extremely pigmented, much more than other purple shampoos Iโve tried. A little goes a very long way, so donโt overdo it unless youโre aiming for lavender hair. ๐ I usually leave it on for about 10 minutes for the best results. (Thatโs what works for me, not professional advice) Because itโs so concentrated, one bottle lasts a long time, which makes it an excellent value for the price. A few things to know before buying: โ It doesnโt make my hair softer, shinier, or more moisturized. In fact, I find it a bit drying. โ I always follow it with a good conditioner or a hair mask, and that works well for me. โ The scent is fine, nothing amazing, but not unpleasant either. โ Wear gloves if you can. The purple pigment is very strong and can temporarily stain your hands and nails. Overall, if your main goal is to remove brassiness and keep your blonde highlights looking cool-toned, this shampoo is fantastic. It may not be the most moisturizing formula, but itโs incredibly effective, lasts a long time, and delivers exactly what itโs supposed to do.

Gold Standard for shampoo toning
Okay, maybe I shouldn't have used "gold" in the title of this review since we're all going for NO GOLD!! I let my gray/white hair grow out and I love it!! And while it requires so much less maintenance now that I'm not fooling with my roots every 2 weeks, it does need a good purple shampoo to keep out the yellow/brassy tones that I believe is what makes us look old with our natural hair color! Fanola to me is the best of the best when it comes to getting out that yellow. Everyone seems to have a different method for using it. I use it in the shower. I wet my hair, lather up with the Fanola and leave it in for about 5 min. while thinking about how cold my husband's shower is going to be while I'm fooling around with my hair! I rinse it out really well and then put in a deep conditioner (I use It's a 10 deep conditioner) for the rest of my shower. The last thing I do is rinse out the conditioner. Now, this stuff will dry out your hair, a really good conditioner is a MUST! BUT, it will get all that yellow out! If you leave it on too long it'll add a lavender cast to your hair, but I kinda dig it when that happens, it looks cool for a couple of days until it washes out. Fanola will also dye your hands temporarily. I'm too lazy to use gloves and have noticed that I can get the purple off my hands with the rest of my regular shower routine. It has never dyed my shower tile or anything. It is an intense purple though, which is a good thing! My first step to going natural was to lift out the red dye I was using and go ash blonde which then allowed me to grow in the gray/white without a super crazy demarcation line. I've been using Fanola once a week since going blonde and now all natural. I alternate the Biolage purple shampoo (which is not as intense, but also doesn't tone as much), every other time I use purple shampoo since it's not as drying and it smells better. But if you want that yellow out of your blonde/white/gray hair, this is it baby! Just don't go crazy with it and find a method that works for your hair.

Stinky Shampoo
This shampoo works great to tone hair, however the smell is very unpleasantโฆ Iโm glad I only bought the mini size because I can only describe it as an old granny smell?! I also have Fanolaโs blue shampoo and I donโt get why they canโt just use the same fragrance as that one. Itโs also very drying (like any other purple shampoo) so just make sure to follow up with a conditioning product after. Other than the smell, itโs a good shampoo.
