Can a extension cord be used with it to make it longer.

350 Watts divided by 120 Volts = 2.92 Amps Any size extension cord will handle that load without a threat to overheating the conductors.

Recently bought this to use on solder sleeves. it will not get hot enough to melt the solder. is this normal? or do i have a defective product.

the one I have will melt the solder but it will take a little time . you will see the solder turn silver and cover the bare wires

I don't think that is normal. You might check and see if it is touching somewhere near the plastic shield or it has something inside the heat deflector. Mine works good. If it continues I'd call and get a replacement or refund.

Does this have ptfe or teflon? is it safe for use around pet birds?

No, its not safe for use around pets, the tip becomes really hot!
