... its labeling (4 mg caps yet makes it look like 8 mg) and does not identify its source
The product is misleading in its labeling (4 mg caps yet makes it look like 8 mg). The source is not clearly identified on line.Product description fails to describe whether the product is synthesized (as is nearly all commercial product used for aquaculture) or obtained from natural sources, micro algae, phaffia yeast or krill. Phaffia yeast exhibits 100% free, non-esterified astaxanthin, which is considered advantageous because it is readily absorbable and need not be hydrolysed in the digestive tract (of fish). In contrast to synthetic and bacteria sources of astaxanthin, yeast sources of astaxanthin consist mainly of the (3R, 3’R)-form, an important astaxanthin source in nature. Finally, the geometrical isomer, all-E, is higher in yeast sources of astaxanthin, as compared to synthetic sources. This contributes to greater efficacy because the all-E (trans) isomer has greater bio-availability than the cis isomer. Astaxanthin has two chiral centers, at the 3- and 3′-positions. Therefore, there are three stereoisomers; (3R,3′R), (3R,3′S) (meso), and (3S,3′S). Synthetic astaxanthin contains a mixture of the three, in approximately 1:2:1 proportions. Naturally occurring astaxanthin varies considerably from one organism to another. The astaxanthin in fish is of whatever stereoisomer the fish ingested; that produced by Haematococcus pluvialis, which is commonly used in animal feed destined for human consumption, is the (3S,3′S) stereoisomer. The primary use for humans is as a dietary supplement. Due to its higher bioavailability, the yeast source ((3R, 3’R)-form) is preferable. On careful close inspection of the fine print on the product label this product is identified as from haematococcus pluvialis. Based on a careful review of peer review literature its bioavailability appears to be inferior to the yeast product. This must be crtically evaluated as bioavailability (absorption) is also related to several other factors. My point is this is touted as highly available with no qualification. Currently the avg price of Haematococcus pluvialis astaxanthin is about $150/Kg, or $0.15/mg. The bottle contains 180, 4 mg caps or 720 mg at for a total product cost of $10.80. The product is recognized as a dietary supplement by the FDA, so there are no regulatory hurdles. At $18.99, that is a 90% profit. As a a businessman I recognize we are in business to make money, but I loath misleading labeling and marketing practices. If you have a quality product say so. Clearly identify its source and be open about its quality. I don't mind paying as long as I know what I am getting.

Disappointing. Try another brand
I had earlier purchased Astaxanthin from Sports Research and the results were kinda in the face. I was quite impressed with it that I purchased another bottle when I finished the first one. It was my mistake to assume that all brands will have similar quality going by the dosage alone. This one does not show much of effect on skin or joints while with Sports Research Asta it was very noticeable. I've probably had 20 of the 180 caps. not sure if having the rest will help much ! Will not purchase this brand again.
