Classic Whittling: Basic Techniques and Old-Time Projects

Not great for an absolute beginner (but probably too basic for a yeoman) whittler
I wanted to like this book--I love the projects that he included based on the table of contents, but in retrospect I wish I'd gotten something else. Other than a llama I tried whittling as a kid, I bought this as a complete beginner. The book didn't seem particularly well laid out for someone like me--the projects aren't in ascending order of difficulty or anything, so I felt like I just needed to flip through and find something interesting. It also wasn't always clear. For example, on carving a dumbbell with a ring, it was very unclear in the book how to disconnect the ring from the dumbbell, and I just sort of guessed (breaking my ring on one of the attempts).Personally, I also had an issue because I'm living temporarily in a desert, so many of my tools are back home, and it's impossible to find sticks, etc. just laying about. Those are specific to my circumstances, but be aware that many of the plans require either found materials or tools other than a simple knife. One suggestion: Much of the most useful guidance in the book is about gear, so if you are buying this as a total novice, maybe buy the book and wait to buy a knife, whetstone, etc., rather than all at once like I did).Anyway, this is probably way too much info, but I'd probably stick with forums and the internet for basics, and then buy books of plans, etc. when you're ready for something more advanced.

Good solid beginners book
This is a fine introduction to the subject, with good, clear instructions and illustrations. The tone is light and easily read, making it a good fit for children too, yet goes sufficiently into detail to properly explain the topics. The projects range from simple to advanced, well-explained and actually useful; something you'd like to try because it's fun stuff, that is not always the case in these kind of books. All in all a very good starter book

Good reference for me
Hot this from the library first and then decided to get a copy I can keep. Several projects I am interested in completing. The chain with the ball in the box is on of the projects. Good directions and pictures

A very informative book on what i love doing. Whittling.
I've been a pocketknife whittler since 1994, and i have this book both in print form, and in kindle, so what does that tell you. Great little book. 😊

A must-have for any serious Whittler’s library.
I am dozens of women books and this is one of my favorites. Easy to read and clearly illustrated. With many great projects.

No deep review here.
I honestly have not read this yet. The stars are because it is a book, it arrived in book shape, and since I read up on it a bit I expect it will be pretty much as advertised.
