Quite disturbing, and also really good
This book is about the hunt for two serial killers. Serial killers, who do horrible, disgusting, disturbing things to people, and who have horrifying opinions and thoughts about women. That said, this book was super engaging and a really great read. At times I was incredibly frustrated with the characters, and pretty much yelling at them on the screen. Scenes of super tight with suspense, during which I was doubting the motives of characters, which made it super intense. So good. I haven’t read a lot of this series, but if this is a good representation, then the television show is not doing the stories much justice. It’s like frosting.

Much more focused than "The Surgeon."
I'll repeat my disclaimer from the previous review, this book series has NOTHING in common with the TV series other than the names of characters. With that out of the way, this is a MUCH more focused narrative. In the previous novel, "The Surgeon," it seemed the author didn't quite know where she was going with her characters. This time she clearly made Rizzoli the lead character, and the story was much more focused and on point. There weren't the endless pages of superfluous information as in the previous novel. I enjoyed the story a lot and only had a couple of issues which led to the 4 star rating instead of five. First the story came to a rather abrupt end. I was thinking it was going to end on a cliffhanger and then, boom, it was done. That part didn't flow as well. Secondly, once again Rizzoli has this "It's her against all the men of the world" attitude and it's starting to wear thin. I hope the author moves away from beating us over the head with this as the series continues.

Very scary people
I enjoyed this book very much. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It was both exciting and scary at the same time. I look forward to the next book in the series.

2nd book in the Rizzoli/Isles series
This book was just as captivating as the first (the surgeon). If like me you watch the tv series this is reminiscent of the first episode season 1. But although the two have similar storylines thats as far as it goes the apprentice is a totally new adventure.Rizzoli's character gets fleshed out a bit more and also get a running romance sideline - still not sure whether this added to the story or not... but I guess it helps round of her character a little. We alos learn more about Isles's character so she is no longer a 2-dimensional character like in the Surgeon.Basically Rizzoli gets called in on a case of a serial killer who gets nicknamed the Dominator. Looking at the crime scene it eerily reminds her of another serial killer dubbed the Surgeon (aka Warren Hoyt) who she was primarily responsible for capturing in book-1. We meet FBI Agent Gabriel Dean who turns up like the proverbial FBI bad-penny - he gets access to the investigation but gives no reason why he is on the case (tho we do find out he has some top brass behind him opening doors so to speak... )and to top it off he knows where to look for evidence and again gives no reason why/how he knows... which really brings up the question who is the Dominator?! And just when you think our heroes might have a handle on the situation Hoyt escapes from his prison and now it looks like the Surgeon and the Dominator have not only hooked up...they have Rizzoli in their crosshairs...There is no you MUST read the first book before this one...there is enough information that this could stand alone as a different adventure however as with most running series it helps with the character carry over from one to the next. A prime example is the reason why the Surgeon wants Rizzoli. Its a pretty good page turner - took me a day to finish - totally worth the read and absolutely recommended.

Good story
It had some slow parts, but I persevered and it got better. I ended up liking it. The ending surprised me, but after thinking about it, I liked it a lot.

Not as good as the first
I enjoyed Ms. Gerritsen's first forensic thriller, "The Surgeon," but this second, "The Apprentice" felt like a rehash of the first -- it even used the same serial killer for the bad guy (partly). This one just seemed to drag more. It also felt rather cliche to have a woman cop struggling to prove herself in the "man's world" of homicide detectives (but this could be because this book was published in 2002: so maybe it wasn't cliche back then). I mostly didn't like, and didn't understand, why FBI Agent Dean continually berated the main character, Detective Rizzoli. I thought maybe in the end the author would explain this (the agent was trying to bring out the best in Rizzoli? Or push her through a frightening case with "tough love"?) but it was never made clear, so I was just left hating those scenes. I'll give Ms. Gerritsen's third book a try, but if she doesn't prove herself there, I'm done.

A physician, always a physician
Even when she tells a story, the medical terms have to appear. And that’s what makes every one of her novel an alternative place, away from a hospital, to have blood and gore.A strength that Gerritson commands. She cuts it so well with every story she told. I cringe and turn the pages to avoid the gore and blood, just like a child who uses his palms to cover his eyes when he is confronted with a gory scene but still peep in suspense. The story is so good; so fast-paced; so believable. Sometimes it gives you the creeps as if the killer just creeps up your back. Clammy hands and heavy breaths. This one is another outstanding read. I like it.

Muy bien
Me gusta la novela policiaca, la novela negra, y en este caso además me entretenía la serie de TV que se derivó de esta saga. Mantiene la atención, es interesante y engancha. Leeré el que sigue
