Dear customer, the width of pads is 1 11/32 inch.

Is there any way to reverse the tool to lift cabinets or heavy items off the floor?

Yes. You can reverse the head on the clamp by pushing in on the large button and reverse the face of the clamp. It reattaches the same way. But I would not use this useful tool for lifting anything up as you described.
