Japanese curry powder
Really love this . Gives the taste of Katsu curry I crave sometimes . Keep it in the packet in a jar in the fridge. May go lumpy in time in the packet but just crush with a spoon ,it's well worth it for the taste ,nice to find something vegan .

Gluten free
This is a fabulous mix for Japanese style katsu , not too spicy and is very tasty too , I didn't have any reaction after eating this ( I have coeliac disease) a bit more expensive but it's worth it , very easy to use and it has great quality, it's not something I would buy weekly but it is value for money as you get more than one serving

Delicious gluten free alternative + Nutritional label and directions clarification
When I was in college about 15 years ago, I had gotten the opportunity to spend a semester in Tokyo. At least once a week I ate at Coco Ichibanya, a Japanese style curry restaurant, and it was one of my favorite foods there. Back in the states, I had gotten Golden curry and some other boxed roux cubes and while they weren't anything special, they were easy to use and tasted pretty good. Fast forward a few years to where I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. (Serious autoimmune disease where one cannot consume gluten such as wheat, rye, or barley.) Unfortunately, all boxed curry roux cubes I knew of were made with wheat flour, so I started making my own. I would occasionally spend an hour or so with butter, curry blends, rice flour, some pans, and made some roux cubes of my own, but it was a decently long and inconvenient process. Fast forward again, but to now. I had looked in the past and never found prepackaged curry roux with anything other than wheat flour, but Yamasan Kyoto Uji uses Millet / Sorghum, a gluten free alternative, and other ingredients that I had historically put in my own roux cubes. I was super excited to try it. Now, the package itself is from Japan, but the manufacturing information for English speaking countries comes in the form of a label that has ingredients and a nutritional table. While helpful, what it doesn't have is instructions on how to prepare. A few other reviews on here have mentioned how they have prepared it, but in case anyone wants to know what the company suggests, it turns out that there actually *are* instructions, just *under* the English label (and in Japanese). I've attached images to this review of these instructions, both in native Japanese and translated English, as well as an additional translation below. This is on the package in Japanese: === Ingredients (4–5 Servings) Curry roux: 1 packet Meat: 250g Onions: 300g Water: 600ml (about 3 cups) Carrots: 1 medium-sized carrot (200g) Other vegetables: Any additional vegetables of your choice Cooking Instructions - Prep and Sauté the Meat: Lightly season the meat with salt and pepper, then sauté it ahead of time. - Sauté the Vegetables: Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pot. Add the onions and sauté them. Once the onions are cooked through, add the other vegetables and sauté everything thoroughly. - Simmer: Add the pre-cooked meat and water to the pot. Simmer until the ingredients become tender. - Add the Roux: Turn off the heat. Add 1 packet of curry roux into the pot. - Thicken: Turn the heat back on and simmer, stirring slowly to ensure it doesn't burn, until the curry is completely cooked through and thickened. (Optional): Adding a splash of apple juice at the very end will make the spiciness milder! === I found that for a single serving, 1/3 of the bag (50g) worked well with 1/3 of all of the other ingredients. I used about 100g of onion, some breaded chicken, 1 cup of water, and 50g of the curry roux. Followed the instructions otherwise exactly as listed. Verdict? It's legit. It's not overwhelmingly spicy (in fact I think I would add some heat like hot pepper, but it's an easy fix) and it has a surprisingly nice depth of flavor for how quick and easy it is. You could use chicken or beef broth / stock as well, but I thought it worked well with water. I found it thickened nicely, but you could add more / less water to your liking. Sure, it's a little pricy compared to a box of Golden Curry, but when you have dietary restrictions and don't want to make your own, I would absolutely recommend this brand. One thing I do want to mention, the label's "Fiber" is wrong. There are very probably not 9g of fiber in a 25g serving. Beneath the English label is the Japanese label and it confirms the Macros, but it is not a requirement or a common thing for Japanese labels to separate Fiber. It has Calories, Fat, Protein, Sodium, and Carbs, and what it looks like happened is they split all Carbs either into a Sugar or Fiber. It does have 13g of Carbs per a 25g serving, and the 4g of sugars makes sense with the ingredients, but it erroneously assumes that the remainder is straight fiber, which is wrong. The 9g would be fiber + digestible starches (anything that isn't an in indigestible fiber). Given that the carb in question and what makes this product is Millet, looking at Millet flour would lead you to nutrition more in the lines of ~2.5g fiber and ~6.5g starch. "Whoa, why do you care so much about the fiber being wrong?! Can the rest of it be trusted?!" - Simply put, high fiber foods give me serious gas, and anyone reading this that is shying away because of 9g of fiber can rest assured that this is not the case. As for the label being trustable; yes. It appears to be a common issue with Japanese to English labels because Fiber isn't something listed and what happened above appears to be quite common. TLDR; It's a great curry roux powder that's safe for Celiac / wheat allergies, has some instructions on the package under the label (see above), and I'll be buying this for the foreseeable future.

Great Curry base!
Made Curry with this and it turned out great! Thickened nicely and has a great flavor! Was a bit on spicy side for me, but I am a total wuss for spicy foods so it probably would be just fine for a normal person. Either way though, this is a mix I will be doing my best to keep in stock in my pantry!

Delicious and Celiac friendly!!
I bought this so I could make my friend who has celiac disease tonkatsu curry since she loves Japanese food but can’t eat most curries because they contain gluten or soy sauce. I tried it out and she loved it as did I and it tasted exactly like any other traditional Japanese curries in my opinion. I couldn’t read the packaging and there were no instructions on how much I should add so I just added a little bit at a time till the flavor was right. It has little to no spice or heat depending on the person. My friend is sensitive to spicy things but she said it had almost no spice(as in heat). It was flavorful and rich which is really dependent on how much you decide to add. It is now a staple in our house and I’m so happy I could finally share this dish with my friend. 10/10 highly recommend!! Side note - It does not have any thickening agent so I used a cornstarch slurry but I might try gluten free flour instead next time I make this since it takes a lot of cornstarch to get to the thickness I like for curry.

Hooray for gluten free curry!
I love this curry packet, and it’s become a real staple in our cooking routines. So lucky to have found a gluten free Japanese curry roux! It’s saved me a ton of time, and the taste is great! I do wish there was a spicier version, but it’s easy enough to make spicier. I use it the same way as the regular curry blocks, and it’s delicious. Recommended!
