No, I would not say this is a jacket made for deep winter. It is not particularly lined and while it fits well and is true to size, it is not an especially warm jacket. Likewise, you won't have a lot of wiggle room to wear a sweater under it.

What is the back length from the collar to the bottom of the jacket in the medium or large size?

27" from bottom of collar to bottom of jacket X-tra large. Go one size up, sleeves are perfect length for handlebar reach. I'm very satisfied with this purchase. Quality leather with pads in the right places.
