COOLPIX B700 Digital Camera

I wanted an affordable point-and-shoot camera for photographing birds and was attracted to the B700's variety of features and its superzoom. I was able to take some great photos right away without much photography experience (I did read 2 books to learn about camera settings and basic techniques for nature photography). The autofocus is great. I take a lot of shots in bursts of 5. Like most cameras, there is a delay after a burst, but it is not horribly long. I am usually able to take a few bursts of a bird before it flies off. The Active D-lighting is amazing for birds. A backlit bird can look black in my binoculars, and the camera can sometimes get a better view of it with clearer color details. I take a lot of photos of waterfowl on reservoirs with bright sunlight coming from above and reflecting from below and behind the birds. The digital viewfinder is very impressive. It always turns on quickly when I put it up to my face, and it does not mind that I wear glasses! The image is very clear, as if you are looking through a traditional viewfinder. The shadows are a bit darker in the digital viewfinder than on the screen, but I got used to it. If the shot looks a little dark, I'll take it anyway and then see how it looks on the screen. It is a little tricky to keep the camera steady when zoomed in all the way, but it can be done. For the attached photo that looks like a red dot, I stood outside my apartment, zoomed in all the way on Mars, and photographed it without a tripod. It is not a great photo–I just took it as an experiment–but it demonstrates how powerful the zoom is and how well the camera helps you take a stable shot. The Wi-Fi feature does not work well for me. I don't know if it is the camera or the app or that I am using an iPad mini 2 that is about 4 years old. I was only able to import through Wi-Fi once out of about 80 attempts. I gave up on it and just import by putting the SD card in my laptop. I can live with that. I get great photos, and it does not take long to import them to my laptop.

I seriously considered getting a Nikon 3400 DSLR kit with a zoom lens. Bigger sensor, better glass but missing key features like stabilization. I decided I simply did not want to carry a tripod around with me. And that pretty much is the issue with cameras. You have point and shoot cameras that go out of their way to compensate for lack of skill in the photographer, of which, this is the best one currently. And you have cameras that can't do that but have better equipment. But that better equipment takes worse photos, not better if you are not highly skilled. If you want both these things, you really need to pony up $3k and get a Sony alpha mirrorless kit. And then be prepared that 90% of the time you can't tell the difference. And that really is the issue here. This camera is amazing in its versatility. A jack of all trades yet master of none. In a relatively small package. Need to take professional quality wedding photos? Don't use this camera. Go rent a much more expensive camera or better yet hire a professional photographer. You will be much happier. But the average person would be very happy with the personal photos they took at a friends wedding using this. Need a cam corder? Go buy one. They are cheap. But when you run into a situation where you wish you could record the next five minutes, you will be happy you have this camera. Shoot professional images you routinely photoshop? Don't get this camera. You want that $3 Sony alpha. However, when you occasionally want a RAW photo, you will be happy you have this camera instead of say, its big brother the P900. Want a purse camera? Not this one. You want the ultra slim little brother or its not as good clone made by Canon. However, neither is this so big its a burden to carry around. This camera replaces my Sony R1....something I paid twice as much for in its day. It's better. Takes better pictures, especially in low light despite the smaller sensor. Much more to the point it is smarter. Better at focusing. Better at choosing color and exposure settings. Has a lot better effects. Just better. The technology took a huge leap forward in a short period of time.

First let me say that the B700 has some really nice glass. The zoom is incredible. However, the Nikon menus leave much to be desired. They are a bit confusing with a lot of modes and settings being buried in odd locations. Part of my frustration has to do with the fact I'm coming off the Nikon D5100 where most camera modes/functions are a LOT more "convenient" and intuitive. Another frustration and one that Nikon should be ashamed of is the viewfinder. It desperately needs a rubber eye-cup. The viewfinder currently sits behind a flat HARD piece of plastic and there is a cheesy square cut out to look through (COME ON NIKON!!!). If it's bright outside the sun is gonna blind you because you can't seal it out on the flat plastic, plus it's just plain uncomfortable.....a bit of thought regarding comfort and usability would have been nice. Nevertheless, this camera is lighter than any of the pro body cameras and that is what I wanted. It's easy to grip and use the zoom. The flash is adequate in close pictures but a hot-shoe would have been great........or even a Bluetooth function to control an external flash. A cheap software fix that was ignored. Of course, many of the speed-lights today will trigger off the camera flash or can be controlled manually............but that's a pain. One other thing that is missing is a lens hood..........Nikon............you know it needs it! Now I have to go by a cheesy rubber one. Let's talk focus! There are several focus modes and most are spot on especially the single point focus. Nevertheless, personally I would have preferred the "manual focus" to be usable in all modes.....not an option but you can use it in M mode.. You can assign some functions (such as manual focus) to buttons on the camera which is helpful. I made the zoom on the lens act as manual focus. Which works perfectly......in M mode. The zoom truly is extraordinary! The pictures below (pic 1 - horses are in the distance over the hill) were taken at dusk and the subjects were almost 3/4 of a mile away. I did not have a tripod and due to the low light (and my shaky hands) there was a small amount of digital noise. As you can see the camera can take acceptable pics at great distances. I did not use RAW mode in this instance but if you have a EXTREME PRO memory card (at least a Class 10 SDXC UHS-I Memory Card or you're gonna have some REAL problems with this camera in video and RAW modes) then I HIGHLY recommend using the RAW + F mode. Yes, the files are large but the quality is astounding and batch editing is a dream! If you can't afford Adobe products then check out Coral PaintShop Pro and AfterShot Pro.........for less than $50 bucks each you can do almost anything Adobe Lightroom can do with RAW or JPEG files. As a disabled amateur photographer I have enjoyed being free from carrying 25lbs of lenses, speedlights, filters, batteries, and converters with me, but If your looking for studio quality pics out of the box with this camera then you might be better off with something else. Every camera takes time to get the feel of so I expect my pics (and the frustration with the wonky menus) to get better. For the money you can't beat this camera!

I typically use my phone to take vacation photos. I had zero experience with a bridge camera or a DSLR. I had a safari trip this summer so I figured I’d better get something that could zoom in on the animals. I got some great shots. The price was also great for something that I thought I would use just the one time. But is now becoming a hobby and I may upgrade to a mirrorless camera soon. Overall it was easy to use. The lens is fixed so there was no worries about changing to the proper lens. The autofocus works well. It has way more function than my phone. The picture quality meets my needs for social media posts. It is a good size for traveling.

I HATE THIS CAMERA!!! I was so excited to learn of this new model coming out last October. A friend has the p900 and loves the super zoom. I checked it out and was pretty impressed with the zoom capabilities. Then I read about the b700 and I was excited about the zoom and also that it would shoot in RAW format. So I placed my pre-order with Amazon and waited until October. I usually shoot a Canon DSLR but I travel a lot and have become tired of lugging around heavy lenses and always having the wrong lens on the camera. So I was researching for a high-end point and shoot that would give me some great travel pics, zoom options for wildlife (birding), and just some general easy photos without pulling out the big Canon. I was also excited to have the Bluetooth option to transfer my pics to my phone and not have to worry about card failure or a lost camera and not have to carry an external storage. My expectations were geared toward point and shoot quality, although I have been quite impressed with some of the shots my husband has taken with some of his inexpensive little PNS cameras. The camera came and I was so excited to dig in and learn about it. 1. The Bluetooth feature would not work. My phone kept saying it was waiting for the camera. I tried several times and could not make it happen. I called support and waited forever and then the girl on the phone tried and tried to get it to work to no avail. She promised to research it and call me back. Of course, nothing happened. I tried again with calling her back and she did not remember me and could not find my documentation. Again she could not make it work. So that feature is a disappointment. 2. The pictures are inconsistently out of focus. Unless it is a perfectly sunny clear day, I cannot guarantee any shot will be in focus. I will take multiple shots of the the same subject in hopes that one will be in better focus than the rest. Sometimes there are none in focus. Only once in a while will one have razor sharp focus. I like to make large prints 8x10 and larger and frame my travel pics but none of the pics taken with this camera look good even when printed at 5x7. Another disappointment. 3. The zoom is nearly useless. Even with the stabilization applied you must have a tripod to take a shot of something using the longest zoom. Most of the time, the subject isn't even in the frame. Using a tripod will help with this but the focus, again, is lacking. And I never carry a tripod with me on trips. I hate carrying the extra lenses much less a tripod. So the zoom feature is a disappointment. 4. I bought a PNS because I wanted to do just that - point and shoot. I didn't want to fiddle with exposure. I wanted to shoot mostly on Automatic. This is a big disappointment since the majority of the shots are poorly exposed. I can take better PNS shots with my iPhone. 5. Video sound is hissy and scratchy. Video shuts off after 7 minutes. Another disappointment. 6. There are no true threads to attach a filter to the lens. A 52mm sort of fits but not really and it falls off. Disappointing. 7. Super disappointing customer service. First of all, my biggest mistake was not discovering all of these deal-breakers before the Amazon return policy ran out. I was busy at work and didn't have the time to thoroughly go through the camera and sit on the phone with customer service to properly determine that this camera was junk and needed to be returned. Shame on me! All of this heartbreak could have been avoided. But, alas, I thought that Nikon was a very reputable company (I've owned Nikon products before with no problems) and that my issues would be resolved and/or the camera would be repaired or replaced. I was dead wrong. I took the camera with me to Europe in December and it was really then that I discovered how horribly it performed. I knew that it was not connected with Snapbridge but I really expected it to take some acceptable vacation shots. They were a mess - out of focus and badly exposed. In January I decided to get serious with Nikon and get these issues addressed. My first encounter with "Johnathan" went absolutely nowhere. I told him I needed the camera repaired or returned for a refund. He said no to the return and that they would determine if the camera needed repair. He directed me to call Customer Support again. Next, I spend some time on the phone with "Shanice". After some time, she informed me that the b700 was not compatible with iPhones. What??? Seriously??? She told me I needed to update my firmware and take some pictures and send them to be evaluated. She said she would email me the information on the update and instructions to upload the photos to her for evaluation. I did get an email from her but the link for the update was for Windows machines (I told her I used a MacBookPro) and there were no instructions on how to send her photo files. My email requests to her were ignored. Then I called in and talked at length with "Alex". He told me I did need to update my firmware - a reasonable solution. He walked me through the links and stayed with me while I downloaded the file, copied it to an SD card, and tried to copy it to my camera. Failure, time and time again. He said he didn't know why it wasn't working. Said he needed to research it and would get back to me by Friday or Monday. He even sent me an email saying this. That was March 2nd. Of course, over 2 weeks later, no response from dear Alex. Two days ago I wrote to Nikon again. Told them I wanted a resolution by the end of the week. Today is Friday. Anyone want to bet that I don't hear from them? So Amazon customer - my advice is to stay away from this camera. It has brought nothing but heartache to me. My vacation photos were ruined. I cringe every time I see this $500 mistake sitting on my cabinet. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this!!!

This review is for the Nikon B700. I bought this camera to replace my Nikon CoolPix P530. I was originally going to buy the P900 until I saw the B700 had 20mp, 4K video and shot in RAW format. I'm a wildlife photographer and I always like to have a light, yet versatile point-n-shoot with me. The B700 met and exceeded my expectations. I do, however, wish it too burst shots of more than just 5 fps. Once you get used to the camera AND HAVE READ THE MANUAL, it is very easy to navigate. I've read reviews where people give this camera a one or two star rating because THEY can't figure out how to connect their phone via SnapBridge. Again, after reading the the manual thoroughly, it was literally a "snap"! The AF is very nice and takes wonderful BIF (birds in flight) shots; though it does have trouble sometimes auto-focusing in low light situations. It will do it, but you will have to adjust some settings. It has a nice "snap-back" feature for when you are zoomed way out (with optical zoom) and loose your subject. Just press the button on the side of the lens and the lens retracts enough to allow you to find your subject and zoom back in on it! Manual focusing is easy as well. For the price, for the ability to shoot in RAW and for the functionality (once you get used to it), you just can't beat this camera. Attached are examples of an Osprey in flight, a Roseate Spoonbill preening and a moon rise shot to let you see the versatility of this camera.

I have owned Nikons since I was processing my own black and white film in a makeshift darkroom. I trust the mechanics and the lenses. I find myself very disappointed, though, with their software. I fought with SnapBridge for about a day, and then deleted it from my electronic gear and shut off the camera Bluetooth. I’ll download files via the memory card. It (SnapBridge) worked once, I will say, but I could never get it to pair again. When I re-read the instructions for pairing for the first time, I was surprised at the number of places where the user could go wrong - by pressing one button on one device before another press on another device, or a button press would time out and result in a pairing error. In this day and age, the software should take care of this. The instructions for the WiFi connections were similarly opaque. It appeared that I had to kill my current WiFi connection and establish a mini-connection between the smart device and the camera. I did this, only to have the camera tell me that the password was not correct. I think that a general, high-level explanation of how the Bluetooth or WiFi connections work may have helped. I have no quarrel with Nikon’s hardware, but their software could benefit from more end-user testing and comment. To illustrate how good the hardware is, I shot this moon picture last night - it came out well, I think. I underexposed so that the highlights would not block up and tweaked the detail and contrast with Photoshop. I’m keeping the camera, but not using their software.

I haven’t learned all of its features yet but I’m enjoying the camera. It takes nice quality pics.

Prestaciones: Es una cámara muy práctica, con muchas prestaciones en un paquete compacto, cuyo precio no es demasiado alto. Aspectos destacados: - Zoom óptico 60x, con un lente de muy buena calidad óptica. - Cámara de video 4K - Modos automáticos, de filtros creativos, escenas, y modo PSMA, con modo Manual completo. - Graba archivos RAW - Modos de escena particulares y especiales, como fotos a la luna y de pájaros. Time Lapse, Super Lapse y Star Trail - Picture Control personalizado - U: para asignar por el usuario - Snap Bridge - multiexposicion - Focus peaking Mejoras respecto a su antecesora P600; Mucho mejor enfoque Video 4K Raw Time Lapse, Super Lapse, Night Trail Modo creativo para foto y video. Snap Bridge Focus Peaking. Mi valoración Calidad de imagen: Excelente para el tipo de sensor. La mejor en rango dinámico y color que he probado con este tipo de sensor. Obviamente una réflex o una mirrorless tienen más calidad de imagen, pero no tienen la ventaja del zoom òptico Duración de la batería: Excelente, hasta 700 fotos con todo y Snap Bridge Objetivo: Muy bueno. Muy nítido, aunque no tiene aperturas más rápidas (f/2.8 o menos). Estabilizador: Excelente. He podido disparar sin tripie a zoom máximo Comodidad: tiene pantalla movil, viewfinder, zoom muy versátil, botones personalizables, buen grip Desventajas: Archivos RAW pesan 30 MB ISO hasta 3200 Enfoque podría ser más rápido Algunos se quejan de Snap Bridge, aunque a mí me funciona perfecto con iPhone 6 Plus No tiene entrada de mic externo Conclusiones: Después de haber tenido las antecesoras Nikon P100, P500 y P600, esta es mucho mejor en todos sentidos. 商品は中古の整備品では有馬伝でしたが、ほとんど新品同様で付属品のリストには載っていなかったレンズ保護のフィルターまで付属していました。液晶画面も、説明通り非常に綺麗でした。良い買い物をしたと思っています。Nikonのアプリのサポートは終わっていますが、カードリーダーから読み取るとNX StudioでRawデータが現像できるのでTiffやJPEGと比べ写真の加工の自由度が上がり満足しています。

Has the ease of use of "point and shoot" with a terrific telephoto lens for wild life pics.

I bought this camera used from a vendor new to Amazon so I was a little hesitant. The camera arrived today (4 days earlier than origanally stated). It arrived in what apoeared to be the original carton ( well worn but functional). The camera is great. It looks like someone used it but no signs of wear. No scatches. It works perfectly. The camera came with a fully charged battery, the charger, a 2 GB SD card, and a Nikon camera strap. I put the camera through its paces taking multiple photos using different settings, macro to full zoom, and set up the Nikon app to control and download through wifi and bluetooth. Everything works as it should. The camera is just as good as if it were new. A new camera would look like this after a couple days use. A great buy for the price. A great camera for the amateur that wants to easily take great photos or wants the option to be creative.

Primero quiero decir que no soy un fotógrafo profesional ni mucho menos, así que mis comentarios son de alguien que usa esta cámara para tomar fotos de sus viajes, reuniones y eventos, nada especializado. Lo primero que me llamó la atención fue el zoom de este equipo, siempre me gusta poder tomar fotos de cosas lejanas sin recurrir al zoom digital y está cámara ofrece eso sin problema. La otra cosa que me gustó es su capacidad de tomar video en 4K y las variadas opciones predefinidas que tiene. En general me gustó bastante la cámara, para el uso que le doy, estoy muy satisfecho. La batería le dura bastante, como unos 500 disparos, usando el flash recurrentemente. Lo único que no me gustó es que no trae cargador dedicado para la batería, es decir tienes que cargar la batería conectando la cámara al cargador que se incluye.
