I believe it was C battery. I bought it for my son and I to play but only got to play it once before my house burned down. So it has been a while. 6 months ago. Sorry I couldn't better answer you.

Several reviewers said the flies are too light & hard to flip into the mouth. Would the older round chips work with this new version?

My grandson who is 7 now and I play with this game quite a bit ( he was 5 when I purchased it). At first it is hard to flip them into the mouth, but with practice we got to be pretty good at this, you just have to wait for the right moment to flip them. He always wins.

I believe they take 2 "C" batteries. But, I have not gotten the game out for a while. You better check with someone else.
