Useful and a good quality alternative to expensive retractable setup
I was looking for a while now at retractable awnings I can use and mount onto my SUV. The cheapest ones I can find from reputable manufacturers cost around $300-$400. These are out of my price range. I have a budget rig and I don't want to spend too much on materials that cost more than my vehicle. These poles provide just what I need. It's collapsible, made out of durable material, and functions just as described. Finding poles that extend this tall is hard to come by. The set up is simple. Pull to extend and twist to lock. At the top of each pole, you can put the grommet holes of your tarp and lock it in place using the removable cover.I purchased a Wildventure tarp and have used these poles to support one end while the other is attached to my vehicle. In retrospect, you might want the retractable awning for it's convenience and ease of setup. Honestly, using a tarp and pole combination, doesn't take up that much time. If you're already camping for a couple of days, what's the rush putting up a tarp/awning setup. Photos to follow.

Awesome product
I used these poles to hold up a tarp on one side while the other was paracorded to a tree. I was actually impressed even though I was a little nervous when we got stuck in a severe thunderstorm with high winds. The poles flexed a bit but held up great. I liked the multiple adjust points. My friend had another brand and his filled with water and kept collapsing, but not these, they have a huge cap on the top and after getting 2 inches of rain in 4 hours, they were bone dry and stayed where we left them. Pictures only show 1 pole, but the other was slightly shorter to pitch the tarp for when it rained and the back of the tarp had a lot of pressure on it because it was tied to a tree up high and staked down in the ground, but the poles didn't budge.

Seems good, but ...
I ordered a set of these but the rubber tip broke off from the rubber strap that holds it to the pole. Exchanged for another set and this time both tip covers broke off. This is either cheap parts (not durable rubber) or a design flaw (connector isn't long enough) or both. The poles themselves did a great job doing their main purpose of holding up a dining fly in the rain on Old Rag Mountain. As for the added feature ... it needs work.

Strong and lightweight
So far, these poles are a 5 star. The poles I received matched the product description. The question and answers answered my questions. The reviews were accurate. My expectations were exceeded by the quality of poles that I received. These were my initial concerns:#1 My biggest concern was that the poles would be too thin. The poles not not too thin even though the poles become more narrow at the top. The physics look right witha base that is wider at the bottom. I like that the base and top are a soft plastic that grips instead of hard plastic that slides.#2 My next concern was that the poles would be too heavy. Eight poles came in my box and they were not heavy at all. I have physical limitations and easily lift the box with one hand. The box was so lightweight that I thought I had ordered the wrong product.I could carry only one pole attached to the outside of my backpack without an issue. It would be a little bulky, but strong.I wish the twist locks for extending and collapsing the poles were made of metal instead of plastic. As insurance, I will carry a small amount of duct tape in case the twist locks need emergency repair.Another concern was that the top of the poles would poke through the tarps and tent flys. The top is soft grip type plastic that will not easily damage tarp.Disclaimer: although I bought these poles, I have not used these in the field. I will update when I field test. This review is for those who plan to purchase these as a gift for themselves or others. These come in pairs (2 poles) in in its own cloth-like bag which I suspect helps keep them quiet in the vehicle because they made no sounds in the box.I am optimistic about the poles and do not regret my purchase. I can enthusiastically recommend Ridge Outdoor Gear Adjustible Telescoping tarp poles to family and friends. While I suspect they could survive harsh conditions - keep a small amount of duct tape in your emergency bag.Thank you for taking the time to read this review. I hope you found it helpful.

First Impressions -- OUTSTANDING!
First impressions only -- have not used the poles yet. Extremely sturdy and with much more heft than I had expected. As soon as I removed the first one from the pouch what came to my immediate impression was quality. Expanded both poles and locked them in place. Held firmly. I attempted to get them to slip and they would not move. I expect the poles to work perfectly for what I have in mind (homemade tarp/canopy for my Rav4 when camping). I did not rate stretch and durability as stretch was N/A and I haven't used the poles yet so I don't know for sure about durability. However; based on this first impression, I think they will be very durable. Extremely pleased with this product! The storage pouch that come with the poles was quality too.

The BEST on the market!
I was searching for extendable and sturdy poles for a beach canopy, I found them. They are all aluminum, polished and smooth. The tubing is thick walled. The twist lock action is precise and secure. There is a metal point on the end for a D ring or grommet. The point is covered with a hard molded rubber cap that is heavy duty. Packaged in a thick nylon bag and drawstring that fits 2 poles perfectly. I would guess the weight of two poles is maybe 3lbs.When my poles arrived undamaged and promptly, one section of the twist lock was not locking. I notified Ridgeline and they sent 2 replacements ASAP! They even sent another bag. Will is a great representative who personally MADE ME HAPPY. Thank you Will, I will continue to praise this item and spread word, from the now shaded beaches of Florida, to the campgrounds of Northern Michigan.

Sturdy and Great value. (Update; GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE)
Works Great for a tarp shelter. One of the lanyards for the rubber caps broke on the first use. They are a one piece rubber cap and lanyard. When I pulled the first one one off to put the post in the eyelet of my tarp it broke on the strap. It still serves its function to protect the point but I may lose it at some point. Overall I'm pleased. They are light for how sturdy they are. I have only camped in my back yard but we did have some 15mph winds. I'm heading out on a motorcycle camping trip and I wanted to ensure I'd have a way to get a tarp over my tent if there are no trees in my campsite. I'm planning on bush camping as I travel through Newfoundland and it may be (probably will be) raining. I can put up the tarp with these poles and set my tent up under it and keep dry.I received a replacement rubber cap from William Ridge in the mail with a little note saying he saw my review. That deserves 5 stars in my book. I didn't even have to ask for a replacement. Thank you!! I ended up sleeping in hotels or cabins for my whole motorcycle trip and my camping gear was just along for the 4500 mile ride. I'm looking forward to years of service from these poles in the backyard and the back country.

Holds up to the wind
I have previously purchased another (unnamed) aluminum telescoping pole which I loved right up until one time it was a little windy and those poles just snapped in half. So, I figured it's time to switch to something more sturdy. I used them to hold up a Kelty 12' Tarp for shade. It was great, but then the wind picked up (I later looked up the wind gusts of 30 mph). I was so pleasantly surprised that it appeared there was no stress at all on these poles.Pros- They are very strong, if your guy lines are correct.- The ease of telescoping and tightening them to the desired height is wonderful. The highest is 8ft, honestly who needs more height on a tarp.- I love the removable rubber cap on the top for different tarp configurations.- They are fairly compact so are easy to throw in with the rest of your camping gear.- They go up fast so it is easy to set up your tarp wherever you are.Cons- They are a little heavier than other telescoping poles that are designed with backpackers in mind. However, I decided that when backpacking I would just as soon find trees to string up my tarp.- They collapse down to about 26" which is a little longer than the others I mentioned earlier, but again, that's only an issue if you are backpacking and even then 26" isn't the end of the world. All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase.
