Can someone tell me how long the metal shaft is?

Not looking enough!! Only 3 & a half inches so it won't get deep enough to blend your protein drinks. Unless you want to submerge the motor/base, but it won't last long sound that!! You might as well hold a fat straw to the bottom of your drink & just blow into it to mix it up. That will give your lungs a good workout & be a great exercise!!

Does this "eat up" the life of your batteries.? I read that some are expensive to use because the battery life decreases fast and must be replaced

I don’t think so, but it wouldn’t matter to me - it’s definitely worth a battery or two. My husband eyes lit up when I brought him a frothy cup of coffee!

How is this different from an immersion blender?

It is not designed to blend. This is battery operated it's not very powerful but does the job of foaming of the milk and I have to say it's been doing well mixing my huel powder as well

It looked like local made but the box says made in China.
