Review: Very entertaining and well done - How to Speak Dragonese (Hiccup) I was worried at first that my 6 year old would have trouble understanding the narrator's accent, but from the first words he was fascinated with this exciting story. The accent adds powerfully to the feel of the story, very Viking sounding. We quickly figured out that this story and the movie have little in common but that didn't matter a bit. I immediately ordered two other audio CD's in this series. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the first one and get the story from the beginning, but my boy has no problem figuring out the time line so when we do get it we will just start over from the beginning so we can hear them in sequence. Meanwhile we are really enjoying these. In this story Hiccup has been collecting data on the language of the dragons and he alone is able to communicate with them. He put all the information in a notebook which he always carries with him. While out with his class for a pirating lesson he and his best friend Fish Legs get lost in the fog, accidently board a Roman Ship, Toothless is captured, the boys escape, then they are kidnapped, run into Alvin the Treacherous. Alvin quickly figures out how valuable the book of dragonese would be for his plan to control dragons and take over the archipelago. The book is accidently sliced in half and he gets one half of the book. The Romans (guided by Alvin the Treacherous) also kidnap the heir of the Bog Burglars, Kamakazi, and the three kids work out a plan to escape. Each of the Dragon stories has a unique plot, no formula story here. Now that I've heard three stories I see they are woven together so we get to know the people in the stories. The characters each have personality that resonates. Just their names are hilariously funny using all the words my boy is not allowed to use at school such as Snot Lout, Fish Brains, Duh Brain. Just that aspect of the stories alone cracks up my 6 year old. They put stinging worms in someone's knickers to get even for an offense. Antics on the verge of misbehavior but pulling back from the brink of being a "bad influence". I highly recommend all of this series for loads of fun entertainment. We own the books as well now but listening to them narrated is so much better. It really captures that Viking feeling. Review: Nice size for a child to read. Good quality. - Purchased for my grandson. He wasn't much of a reader and finding these books helped him learn to enjoy reading. He loves them. He even reads to his big sis.

A GREAT SERIES!!!
I loved the language and the fun of this book series. Your children will have a blast reading and listening to these stories! So creative and fun. The word choices invoke the mood of the story, and will bring a deep desire to keep reading, reading, reading! I couldn't put them down. And I am an adult, but reading them to children, or them reading it to themselves if they are old enough, will just be a great adventure! The names of the Vikings are hilarious and so unique. Everything about this series of books is terrific!

The books are utterly different than the movies (which my 6 year-old and I love), butgreat in their own right
If you or your kids haven't read the books, I highly recommend them. I read them to my 6 year-old. Probably a solo read for 8 year-olds and up. You should know going in that they barely resemble the movies. I love the movies I think the characters and stories are terrifica and clever and truly excellent, but I am even more impressed by them when I think about from the books. But that's no knock on the books, which are great in their own right. Just totally different. Way more sarcastic. Way more subversive. Fun, fun, fun. Just don't be dissapointed that the denizens of Berk in the books barely resemble their more smoothly drawn (in more ways than one -- you'll see when you pick up the books) derivitives in the films.

Great little adventure part 3
This is the third book in a great series. Although you will notice it's not exaclty like the movie, but is very fun. I like to read this to my little neighbor boys. They are simple stories, but have some big words that are fun to talk about. It's hard to find stories appropriate for young kids that we can enjoy reading too. The art in here is crude, but the guys love them.

My opinion
I am a 11 year old girl, who was always fascinated by dragons, I just happened to be borne in the year of the water dragon, I hope that everyone else who read’s this book enjoys it as much as I do.

My son and I spent many glorious nights with our friends from Berk!!
For any fan of dragons, young or old, Cressida Cowell gets the highest marks for fun, humor, imagination and "lovability"! By now, everyone knows who Hiccup and Toothless are as their movies will attest, but how did it REALLY all get started? Treat your family to ALL of the adventures of Hiccup, Toothless and the residents of Berk and have a rollicking good time.

A fun read for kids and adults
Some series have a great starting book and then you notice that the author is running out of ideas. Not so with the How To Train Your Dragon Series! Cressida Cowell clearly has a lot of great stories to tell, because in this third installment of the series, she seems just be warming up. It‘s not so much that the plot is amazing. An army of Romans led by a familiar foe kidnap Hiccup, Toothless and the heir to the Bog Burglar tribe, and they have to rely on their considerable resourcefulness and some crazy ideas to get free. The odd but ultimately loving father-son relationship between Hiccup and Stoick, Hiccup‘s friendship with and devotion to Toothless and a new dynamic between Hiccup and the first real female character in the series, Camicazi, are all central themes. I read this book (and the previous two) to my son, who is 8, and we both loved it. Cowell has a unique sort of humor that pervades all of her books, and it‘s really funny both to kids and adults. I can’t recommend this series, and this third installment, enough. 5/5 stars. Also check out the audiobooks narrated by David Tennant, whose distinctive Toothless voice has been mimicked endlessly by both of my kids lately…
